Freelander 2 2.2 Diesel TD4 / SD4 (2006 – 2014) Service from just £288.26 + VAT
The Freelander 2 2.2 litre diesel TD4 / SD4 2006 – 2012 should be serviced every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or every 12 months, which ever comes sooner.
The Freelander 2 2.2 litre diesel TD4 / SD4 2012 – 2014 should be serviced every 16,000 miles (25,600 km) or every 12 months, which ever comes sooner.
The service schedule involves an A service and a B service.
The first service or 12 month service is an A service.
The second service or 24 month service is a B service.
The A and B services then alternate for the life of your Freelander.
In addition to the standard A and B services there are a few other items which need replacing at fixed intervals, these are:
- the brake fluid requires replacing every 36 months (3 years) regardless of mileage;
- the flexible hoses require replacing every 72 months (6 years) regardless of mileage;
- the coolant requires replacing every 120 months (10 years) regardless of mileage;
- the gearbox oil requires replacing 120 months (10 years) or
- PRE 2012 MODELS : every 150,000 miles (240,000 km);
- POST 2012 MODELS: every 160,000 miles (256,000 km).
- the power transfer unit oil requires replacing every:
- PRE 2012 MODELS : 150,000 miles (240,000 km) or 120 months (10 years);
- POST 2012 MODELS: 160,000 miles (264,000 km) or 120 months (10 years).
- the rear differential oil requires replacing every:
- PRE 2012 MODELS : 150,000 miles (240,000 km) or 120 months (10 years);
- POST 2012 MODELS: 160,000 miles (264,000 km) or 120 months (10 years).
- the Timing belt, tensioner and idler pulley requires replacing every:
- PRE 2012 MODELS : 150,000 miles (240,000 km) 0r 120 months (10 years);
- POST 2012 MODELS: 112,000 miles (168,000 km) or 84 months (7 years).
- the ancillary drive belt requires replacement every:
- PRE 2012 MODELS : 150,000 miles (240,000 km) or 120 months (10 years);
- POST 2012 MODELS: 112,000 miles (168,000 km) or 84 months (7 years).
We would also recommend:
- the Haldex unit to be serviced about every 2 years, however the Land Rover service schedule does not include this.
The table below gives the prices (at the time of printing) for the Freelander 2 servicing. Please note:
- All prices exclude VAT.
- We always also replace the water pump whenever we replace the timing belt, our prices include this.
- The 10 year service price does not include the replacement of oils in the differentials (if you have had either of your differentials replaced then this will already have been done), these are priced as an optional extras.
- When replacing the differential oils using a pumping technique does not remove the old oil effectively to give a good oil change (this is due to the bends in the channels inside the unit). Therefore we remove the unit from the Freelander, drain it completely, refill and refit. Our prices for changing the rear differential oil and power transfer unit oil include the complete removal and refitting of the unit to get an effective oil change.
- Servicing of the Haldex unit is not included in any of the service prices but is available as an optional extra. The Haldex oil can get very congealed causing issues with the pump and ultimately a complete breakdown of the Haldex unit. We would recommend servicing the Haldex approximately every two years.
- The Generation 3 Haldex was fitted to the 2007 to early 2009 Freelander 2’s, after this the Freelander 2 was fitted with a Generation 4 Haldex. When servicing the Haldex we replace the filter, oil, O-ring and clean out the pump.
- If your Freelander has a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) fitted there will be an additional £31.00 + VAT added to the oil service to cover the additional cost of the specialist low saps oil required.
Our Freelander 2 2.2 diesel TD4 / SD4 (2006 – 2014) service prices, at the time of publication, including labour and parts but excluding VAT are:

Hi Sue, I’d just like to say you guys do a fantastic job of keeping everyone informed and the time you take to answer everyone’s questions is commendable. I just wish you were based in North Devon! Which leads me on to my question.. Can you recommend anyone in North Devon?
I’ve been having issues with my auto gearbox on my 13 reg Sd4 -90,000 miles. This included a heavy thumping noise when stuck in traffic, a thumping noise from reverse to drive, a surge in 1st gear and overall sloppy gear changes. I’ve had the gearbox oil changed and I’ve gone through the reset process but it didn’t seem to make much difference.
I had booked it in for the gearbox oil, ptu oil change and software update but the ‘specialist land rover’ garage I took it to (2 hours away from me!) says that my front diff doesn’t have the drain plug, is a sealed unit and there isn’t a way of draining the oil on my model. He also said ‘no need to update software’ as the my vehicle didn’t need it. I was disappointed to say the least after travelling and booking the jobs to be done from the helpful information I’ve read on your website.
Just looking for someone with your knowledge near me.
All the best,
Hi Gavin,
My profound apologies for the delay in responding, somehow the notices of comments on our site have not been coming through to us.
We would recommend you have a gearbox flush rather than just an oil change. This will change 100% of the oil rather than just about a third of it. It certainly is worth doing a gearbox software update if one is available as we have seen it fix these types of issues (along with the gearbox flush).
They are correct, there is no drain plug on the power transfer unit (nor the rear differential), to change the oil on these units you need to remove them and then refit them – it does make it very expensive but it is worth doing every 10 years.
Unfortunately we do not have any personal experience of a workshop in Devon but we are always willing to help with advice to both the owners and other workshops when requested.
All the best,
Sue
Thanks Sue, your help is much appreciated. They did advertise the ATF flush but said it couldn’t be done on the freelander. I guess I’m back to the drawing board and likely going to have to pay twice for the gearbox oil change. And find somewhere that does the flush. I have another question if you don’t mind as I’ve looked everywhere but can’t find an answer. I removed the boot trim that houses the rear camera as one of the screw clips had failed and needed replacing. I needed to unplug the camera to remove it but after re-fitting, the warning message on the dash shows as camera error. Everything was working fine before and I’ve checked and cleaned the contact points. I’m guessing that I’ve interrupted the connection between the camera and media unit and was wondering if you’d know how to reset it? or is there something I’ve missed that I should have done? Thanks once again for your time. All the best, Gavin
Hi Gavin,
My apologies for the delay in responding. The best thing to do is a hard reset. If you disconnect the main battery, both terminals, and leave for at least 10 minutes, then reconnect them, this will do a hard reset of the systems. If this does not work you will need to put it on diagnostics to reset it.
All the best,
Sue
Thanks once again Sue. I’ll give this a try. All the best, Gavin
Hi, I’m from Australia, Brisbane,
I have freelander2 2013,i bought it from Land Rover Brisbane, in December Last year.it is 110kw TD4,no DPF. What engine oil in Australia must I use??
is it Castrol EDGE Professional C1 5W-30 Engine Oil 20L 3375617 right oil for my Freelander2?
thank you
Hi Alex,
Apologies for the delay in responding.
If you have a diesel particulate filter (DPF) fitted then Castrol EDGE Professional C1 5W-30 Engine Oil is the correct oil to use. Most 2013 Freelanders would have a DPF but if you are unsure then let me have the chassis number and I will check.
All the best,
Sue

My 2014 Freelander 2 has 120 000km under the belt and I am about to change the cambelt. Can I change just the cambelt without the waterpump?
Hello Richard,
Yes, you can change the cam belt without the water pump, although, since it is the same amount of work to get to the water pump as it is to get to the cam belt, it is generally recommended to change both at the same time.
All the best,
Sue
Hello where could I get a heldex service done in the West Midlands
Hi George,
You could have a nice day trip out to Norfolk :), or you could try Bell Engineering.
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sue,
Your service schedule includes the following re the Ancillary Drive Belt for Freelander 2 TD4/SD4 “POST 2012 MODELS: 112,000 miles (168,000 km) or 108 months (7 years)”. Grateful if you would confirm whether the 108 months or 7 years is correct. Thank you.
Hi Sam,
Land Rover changed the changing of the belts from 9 years to 7 years and I had clearly changed the year aspect but missed the month one! Thank you for pointing it out – all corrected now.
All the best,
Sue
I drove my free lander very seldom maybe 3000 km a year, so must I service it every year
Hi
I drove my freelander very seldom I do less than 3500 km a year, do I need to service it every year
Hi Ruel,
The service schedule is based on mileage and time, so a service should be done at least every year and more often if you do higher than average mileage for that vehicle (a Freelander 1 is 12,000 miles and the Freelander 2 is 15,000 or 16,000 miles depending on year). So yes, you should service it every year. In fact, if your mileage is made up of a lot of short journeys then it is recommended you change the oil more frequently as short journeys do not give the engine enough chance to burn off the residues in the oil.
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sue ,
I have a Freelander 2 SD4 le sport 2011 with 64k on the clock and I had and issue a few days ago where as every time I selected drive, the vehicle jerked forward quite aggressively. This only happened in drive not reverse, I stopped and started the vehicle also and the problem was still apparent . Subsequently I decided to give it a good run manually through the gears in sport mode which seemed to clear the issue. What would be your thoughts on this please.
Regards
Hi Nik,
This could have just been an electrical glitch or it could be a sign of a failing Haldex pump (when did you last have your Haldex serviced?). It could be worth putting it on diagnostics to see if any codes were stored.

Sue

Hi Sue ,
Not sure if the Haldex has been serviced I will have to get out my documents
for the vehicle when I get back from offshore, I did check with my own cheap diagnostic tool though and there were no fault codes logged . What do you charge for just the Haldex to be serviced. Thanks
Hi Nik,
A Haldex service for your Freelander is £172.80 including VAT.

Good afternoon. I have a 2010 2.2 diesel with 117000 miles. Regularly serviced and well looked after. Main issue is brakes. Mew master cyclinder, new vacuum unit, new pads, cylinders seals etc. I have to bleed them every single week yet I am not loosing fluid. They are always full of air. Within one week my pedal is on the floor. Secondly, I have the high speed judder…do you think its fuel pump or filter or both.
Hi Gavin,
When did you last change the flexible brake hoses?
It is possible the ABS module is leaking internally, so it is worth checking this.
Which bleeding method and sequence do you use?
What sort of a judder is it? Is it like a fuel starvation and a judder of the engine, or is it more of a vibration?
All the best,
Sue

I have a freelander 2 is on 130000km it’s a 2008 model when is it due for cambelt replacement? Lastly thanks for the response on the rear wheel bearing sound yes it stops the noise on corners or at a certain speed.
Hi Thabo,
The cambelt on your Freelander was due for replacement last year – it is every 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km) whichever comes first. Since you have reached the 10 years before reaching the mileage then the 10 year level has been reached first.
If the noise from the rear is a wheel bearing you would expect it to get worse when cornering in one direction and better when cornering in the other, depending on which side wheel bearing it is.
All the best,
Sue

Hi,i have a 2012 2.2 freelander 2 xs auto just a few things i like to ask you,my gearbox make a whine in 1st, i have an oil leak at the back of the engine but i cant find where its coming from, also im a bit worried when the timing belt and water pump should be change, haldrex unit and gearbox fluid change as well, it has been a reliable car, its only done 80k
Hi John,
The timing belt should be changed at 9 years or 144,000 miles, whichever comes first – so if your mileage is low then it is likely to be 2021 when it is due to be changed.
The gearbox fluid should be changed every 10 years.
The Haldex should be serviced every 2 – 3 years (although it is not on the Land Rover service schedule.
With regard to the gearbox making a whine, check the oil level first.
With regard to the oil leak, it could be coming from the cylinder head cam cover gaskets.
All the best,
Sue

Thank you sue, however are these timing belts ment to last this sort of mileage and have you heard if one gone before its time? And how easy is it to remove the cam cover gasket.
Hi John,
We have never had one of the timing belts go before the time/mileage, so yes, they are meant to last that long – quite impressive!
It is not very difficult to remove the cam cover gasket.
All the best,
Sue
0780 9575 421
Thank you sue.
Just one last thing how do you check the gear box level .
Hi John,
Is it automatic or manual? If it is manual check it from the filler plug which is just behind the driveshaft. If it is automatic you will need diagnostics and it is quite a lengthy process so it would be best to get a Haynes manual and follow the steps.
All the best,
Sue

It’s a pleasure John.

hi I’ve just purchased a freelander 2 2009 it drives very smooth but theres a noise coming from the back that sounds like a wheel bearing any idea what could it be?
Hi Thabo,
Congratulations on your purchase.
If the noise changes when you go around a corner then it is likely to be a wheel bearing. If, however, the noise does not change when you go around a corner it is likely to be the rear differential.
We can supply a reconditioned rear differential, fitted with an uprated pinion bearing, for £495 including VAT plus shipping; or we can fitted it for you, in one day, for a total of £750 including all parts, oils labour and VAT.

Hi.
I’m looking at upgrading my 09 Manual Freelander 2 to an Auto 2014 model. I’ve found one at a local indy dealer with only 30k on the clock but I suspect it’s been garaged for some time as it never had it’s first Mot and has not been taxed since 2017.
Looks like it had it’s first service and then nothing until March this year when it had an A and B at a Landy dealer.
I’ve asked the local sales guy to try and find out exactly what its history is but what should I be looking out for if it has been garaged for a long time (poss over a year)?
Many thanks in advance. If I don’t buy it I may bring my current one to you for a Haldex and rear diff service as it’s never had one, certainly whilst I’ve had it (4 years) as I didn’t know it needs to be done until now! I’m a long way from you guys though unfortunately but will be with the trip I think.
Hi Tim,
It sounds like you may have found quite a gem there with such low mileage – not that these vehicles are at all worried about mileage, they can go on forever!
If it is running nicely with no strange noises, and the engine bay looks clean – check for any leaks around the intercooler – then I would not be too concerned about the time it has stood. Check that all four tyres are the same make, model, size, have the same tread depth remaining and the same air pressure – this protects the drive train. It would be worth getting a Haldex service done since it is four years old.
If there is anything you are concerned about when you test drive it just give us a shout.
All the best,
Sue

All looked good and so I am buying it. The tyres were all near their wear limit so am getting them changed.
Any recommendations on tyres to get? I’m currently running Goodyear Wranglers AW ones but find them very noisy.
I don’t do any off-road stuff so just want something quiet, good grip all round and copes in the occasional wintry snap!
Many thanks
Excellent Tim.
There is a great piece of tyre research which enables you to select the best tyres according to what is important to you. Go to https://www.tirerack.com/tires/reviews/MenuServlet?search=surveyComments and check the “Light Truck/SUV Tires” section – this is based on users experience.
Enjoy your new Freelander, they are great vehicles!

Hi Sue
Just bought 2012 Freelander 2 s16. Can you advise what is contained in the A & B services; Seems great everything works well. I am not close to a dealer so am using a reliable local service garage
Hi Hugh,
Congratulations on your purchase, they really are great vehicles.
The A service includes a number of checks, a change of oil and oil filter and the pollen filter. The B service also includes a few additional checks and a change of air filter and fuel filter.
In addition to the A and B service there are a number of less regular items to be changed at certain intervals, such as flexible brake hoses, differential oils etc. as outlined in the service schedule given.
All the best,
Sue

Hi
Have a 2014 freelander, it done 35,000 do I need a 4 year or 32,000 mile services and what is the extra bits I need done, just bought it and I don’t think anything has been done since it’s first service !
Hi Jay,
Your mileage is below average, so your service schedule needs to run to the age of your Freelander and not the mileage it has done, hence you need to have the 4 year service (64,000 miles). The 4 year service is a standard B service (the larger of the two services) with no additional elements. You should, however, have had the brake fluid changed last year – if this was not done then you would need to do it now.
We would also recommend you have the Haldex serviced, it is not on any Land Rover service schedule, however it is strongly recommended that you service this every 2 – 3 years. So if it has never been done then it is worth doing with the 4 year service – change the oil, filter and clean out the pump.
If you would like us to service your Freelander for you we are based at IP26 4RH, midway between Cambridge and Norwich, and would be happy to attend to your Freelander.

Sue

Hi
I bought a 57 plate Freelander 12 months ago. It has 75k on the clock. I am aware that the timing belt needs replacing now as it is 10 years old. The garage that i bought it from cannot remember if he replaced it before the sale, and i have no mention of it on any paperwork.
Is there a simple way of checking the condition of the belt, other than stripping it all down
Thanks
David
Hi David,
Unfortunately there is no simple way of checking if the timing belt has been changed if there is no record of it. They can even look very pretty new when in fact they have not been changed.

Sue

Thanks Sue….I have bitten the bullet and had it, and the water pump replaced
Thanks for the reply
Excellent David, better safe than sorry!

I own a 2007 LR2 Freelander which so far I am very satisfied with – afart from the thirsty habits , which I atttribute to the gridlocks and short rubs on this small Island where I hail from. Are there any indications or early symptoms of a manifold flap failure! Any particular noises to keep on the ‘look’ out or rather ‘hear’ out for?
This hopefully prior to have to rebuild engine!
Regards
Ivan -Malta
Hi Ivan,
Great to hear you are satisfied with your Freelander 2, they are very capable and comfortable vehicles.
Unfortunately there are no real early warning signals for the flaps. We would recommend changing the inlet manifold by 100,000 miles as a precautionary measure.
On your 2007 Freelander you can use 2 stroke oil in with the diesel at a ratio of 200:1 (about 1/4 litre of 2-stroke to a full tank of diesel). This will help to keep the engine lubricated, which is worth doing as one of the camshafts has quite a heavy load on this engine, and ultimately bring down the emissions, so you are running cleaner and smoother. Be aware that for the first couple of weeks of doing this you may run a little smokier and noisier as it cleans the engine out.
All the best,
Sue

on the 2007 freelander2 does the fuel filter need changing at all, lloyd
Hi Lloyd,
The fuel filter is part of the B service so should be changed every two years or 30,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Sue
Hi Sue, we have recently endured an intermittent start problem on a Freelander2 2.2 diesel 2007 with 140k miles. Occasionally nothing happens when the START/STOP button is pressed. Waiting for a bit works, so far. New vehicle battery fitted as original was 10 years old. Are you aware of this issue and do you have experience of what the solution generally is?
Hi Alistair,
My apologies for the delay in responding.
This could be an issue with the Stop / Start button itself or the connection to the starter motor solenoid.

Sue

Hi, my 2007 F2 td4 is now due for a timing belt. Should I replace the waterpump at the same time.
Plese advise
Hi Alan,
Yes, we would recommend changing the water pump at the same time as it is minimum additional work so pretty much just the cost of the part.

Sue

Problem,,,, Have a 2007 td4. Since flattening the battery, have had issue with what feels like a serious misfire, hiccup, quite a heavy jolt, while driving. Not all the time though. Intermittently, just for a second then all ok till 20 seconds then another. Very hard to replicate.
Disconnected battery to see if that would reset any unhappy sensors, but no joy.
Anyone have any clues as to what might be causing this ? Thanx in advance
Hi Alan,
This sounds like a fuel filter issues, when was the fuel filter last changed?
All the best,
Sue

Hi sue, are you able to tell me if the OEM battery in a 2007 freelander 2 td4 was an AGM Battery. I think I need to replace mine and an AGM is recommended
Hi Alan,
Unfortunately I do not know. They come branded Land Rover so we are not sure who the manufacturer is.

Hello Finca,
The timing belt is not due to be changed until 10 years (i.e. 2018) or 240,000 miles, whichever comes first. In your case it will be due for changing next year.
To set the alarm, language and mirrors please see the owners handbook at https://topix.landrover.jlrext.com/topix/content/document/view?id=65188&groupId=1655.

Hi Sue,
Please let me know the specification / contents of the mechanic toolkit that is used when servicing a freelander 2 td4 auto and the part number for the gear lever gaiter.
Hi Kamau,
The Haynes manual will give you all the tools required to service your Freelander. I would need your chassis number to get you the gaiter part number.
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sue,
Please let me know what i should look out for when purchasing a 2007 freelander 2 automatic Td4.
Hi Kamau,
The main things to check when you are purchasing a Freelander 2 Td4 are:
– that there are no strange noises coming from the drivetrain, particularly a bearing noise coming from the rear, this would mean budgeting for replacing the rear differential;
– check for any leaks around the intercooler;
– make sure the four tyres are matched – the same make, model, size and look like they were replaced at the same time.
These are great vehicles and are generally very reliable.
Good luck with your purchase.
All the best,
Sue

Hi,
Which oil I can use to instead of the Haldex oil( LR003136) for freelander 2 2011 ,because that one not available in my location.
My second question about the rear diff oil, is it OK to use castrol 75w90 AXEL ( 80w90 not available also?)?
Thanks and Regards
Djoubir
Hi Djoubir,
Unfortunately there is no alternative for the Haldex oil, you will need to get this shipped in from somewhere else if it is not available in your area.
For the rear differential use a Castrol Axle EPX 80W90, do not use the 75W90, again you will need to ship it in if it is not available.

Sue

Hi sue,
thank very much for you answer, i still have one question about the smal hole (drilled hole) below the rear Diff ( just below the haldex flling plug), what is the purpose of it? and what is the probleme if i have a oil leaking form if after oil filling?.
Regards and thanks in advance
Djoubir
Hi Sue. I have seen some websites saying that the Volvo Haldex oil is an equivalent spec oil to the LR003036 & LR054941 Haldex oil, but is 1/3rd the price. Have you come across this?
regards
Dave
Hi Dave,
I have not seen the price of the Volvo oil but as far as I am aware it is the same specification if it is for the same generation Haldex.

Hi Sue,
I’m looking at purchasing a 2010 freelander 2, does it tell you when it is due its next service/MOT?
Thanks
Emma
Hi Emma,
Congratulations on considering a Freelander, they are great vehicles.
The service is due every 15,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. There should be a service book with the vehicle which will tell you when it was last serviced. If the Freelander covers less than 15,000 miles in the 12 months after the service then it needs to be serviced at the 12 month point, otherwise have it serviced after 15,000 miles. The MOT renewal date can be checked online at https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status.

Hi,
i have freelander 2, 2.2 Diesel, 190 cv HSE, 2011 with 107000 km in very good conditions, do i need to change the distribution belt and Renew automatic transmission fluid and what about the brak fuild and hoses also ( never done befor for all)
Regards.
Hi Djoubir,
On the Freelander 2, 2.2 diesel model the timing belt is changed every 10 years or 240,000 km, whichever comes soonest; this is the same for the gearbox oil, hence you do not need to change these until 2021 or until you have done 240,000km, whichever occurs first.
The brake fluid and flexible brake hoses should be changed every six years or 144,000 km, so that is 2017 or 144,000 km whichever comes first.
All the best,
Sue

Dear Sue,
Im from Algeria and I have Freelande2,2,2 Diesel model 2012.
My question I need to change the Timing Belt but i dont know if it is Steel or Plastic type and if the above requirement can apply to change the timing belt.
I dont know if the Freelander type In Algeria has the same timing belt like Europe.
Becuase for me is to much to change the belt till 240.00 km.
Please advise
Kind regards
Dear Mohamed,
My apologies for the delay in responding, it has been a Bank Holiday weekend in the UK.
Yes, you will need to change the timing belt either in 2021 or at 230,000 km whichever comes first (you are on the cusp of the change in engine, so depending on your chassis number it may be 2022 or 240,000 km).
The timing belt which needs changing is the rubber belt, not the steel chain. All Freelander 2 timing belts are the same regardless of location.
All the best,
Sue
Dear sir ,
I have land rover freelander 2.2 diesel automatic gearbox 2011 year.
For the maintenance of the engine ,gearbox and all auxiliaries.
I need to have detailed drawings of all vehicle parts.
All detailed specIfictions of all liquid and oil used on this vehicle.
Especially the brand of oils and correspondence. Because there is many brands of oil in the market.
Your assistance is highly appreciated.
Best regards.

Hello Sifi,
The best general source of vehicle parts and specifications for the Freelander 2.2 is the Haynes manual – check https://www.amazon.co.uk/Haynes-Workshop-Manual-Freelander-Diesel/dp/B00MR3JIVA.

Hi Sue, I am in the process of purchasing a 2010 2.2D 4WD freelander (always wanted one – call it mid-life-crisis-must-have ). Only thing is it is now in it’s 6th year and requires the brake fluid&flexible brake hoses done this year (93,000 kms). After arming myself with all your prior posts on the A & B scheduling info. The sales rep is telling me it doesn’t need new brake hoses as its been serviced every year and in good condition. I told him that freelys have their own service schedule regardless of condition……or is he right? what should I do I guess I’m asking? thanks Nicolette
Hi Nicolette,
Congratulations on your decision to purchase a Freelander 2, they are amazing vehicles, I am sure you are going to love it.
The service schedule is the service schedule. According to Land Rover the flexible brake hoses should be replaced every six years to ensure you get no problems with them. A full service history will just show they have not yet been changed, and if you want to keep the service schedule complete then they will need changing. The only exception to this would be if the Freelander was used in harsh or extreme conditions, when things would need servicing more often; or if it does above average mileage, in which case it will need servicing every 15,000 miles (25,000 km) rather than every year. The Freelander you are buying is under average mileage so it should be serviced annually. So you are absolutely correct, you follow the service schedule regardless of condition, and this helps to keep it in tip top condition.
Enjoy!

Sue

Hi,
Do you know how much power steering fluid is required when changing.
Thanks
Hi Chris,
For the Freelander 2 2.2 TD4 you require 1 litre of Pentosin CHF202 and the 3.2 petrol model requires 1.2 litres.

Hi.
What is to be replaced in Service A and what in Service B?
Hi Fanos,
Service A for the Freelander 2 2.2 TD4 is replacing the oil filter, oil and pollen filter and service B also replaces the air filter and fuel filter.

I have a 59 plate FL 2.2 with 55k miles. Just been informed after service that cam belt is overdue for replacement based on age not mileage. By age I think they just did the &%k miles service. Is it correct the cambelt needs replacing after this time and mileage?
Hello Christopher,
The Freelander 2 2.2 TD4 has its cambelt changed at 150,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes sooner. Based on this no Freelander 2 2.2 TD4 has yet become due a cambelt change based on age, and, if your milage remains below average, yours will not be due until 2019.

Looking at a 2010 model with 65k on the clock. Dealer has no record of service history (no books provided by previous owner). I’ve managed to track down its 1st service but nothing since then.
Seems to run well on the test drive & the price looks fair (bearing the lack of history).
What would you recommend – a late A service or early B?
Hi Chas,
At 65k you will be running your services on time rather than mileage. Currently, at 5 year old, you would be due for an A service, however, since you have no history since the first service we would recommend a B service then go onto the scheduled 6 year service (B plus brake fluid and flexible brake hoses) next year. Make sure you take it to somebody who will use the correct oil – they are sensitive to inferior oils being used – otherwise they are very robust vehicles which are very competent and comfortable – enjoy.

How do I check the oil level on my 2009 freelander auto gearbox ta
Hi Pete,
I assume your Freelander is the 2.2 litre diesel model. Here are the instructions:
1. Ensure that the automatic transmission is in ‘P’ and the handbrake is fully applied.
2. Clean the area around the transmission fluid filler plug.
3. Remove the transmission fluid filler plug.
4. WARNING: Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.
NOTE:Make sure that the vehicle is standing on a level surface.
Raise and support the vehicle.
5. Remove the front undershield.
6. Clean the area around the transmission fluid level plug.
7. Place a container under the transmission.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Add 0.5 litres of transmission fluid.
10.CAUTION: A new O-ring seal is to be installed.
Install the transmission fluid filler plug.
Torque: 40 Nm
11. Connect the Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment. Start and run the engine.
12. Using the diagnostic equipment to monitor the transmission fluid temperature, allow the temperature to reach 60 degrees C.
13. Move the selector lever from ‘P’ through all the gear positions, pausing in each gear position for 2-3 seconds and return to the ‘P’ position.
14. Raise the vehicle.
15. NOTE:The fluid level plug and drain plug both use the same point on the transmission. The inner plug is the level indication and the outer plug is to drain the fluid.
Remove the transmission fluid level plug.
16. With the engine running a small amount of fluid should drip out of the level plug (if not then repeat the process of adding fluid).
17.CAUTION: A new O-ring seal is to be installed.
Install the transmission fluid level plug.
Torque: 7 Nm
18. Install the front undershield.

In the process of buying a 2009 xs freelander2, £8992, it has had a sump replacement but there is black oil still evident on the underside – should I be worried? Body work seems ok, just a few scuffs here and there…
Hi Zoe,
Congratulations on your decision to purchase a Freelander 2. If you still have black oil evident on the underside are you sure it is not old oil left over from the problem which caused the sump to be replaced? You could ask the current owner to clean the oil off (with brake & clutch cleaner) and then see if it comes back. One place to check for oil leaks is the intercooler, that is the most common place these vehicles leak (I am assuming it is a 2.2 diesel TD4).

I am looking for a freelander HSE 2009 to 2011. I have seen several nice looking ones but they all seem to suffer the same fault, or what I think is a fault. The black plastic tube over the engine. The right hand end is the filter housing, the other end goes to I think the turbo. Why is there black oil leaking from the joint just before the bend in the pipe as it goes down out of sight. Most of the vehicles have milage of 90,000 to
120,000 with full service history. Between £10,000 to £14,000
Your help would be appreciated, as I will know before hand wheather this fault is something expensive coming.
Thank you, Brian
Hi Brian,
Apologies for the delay in responding.
This sounds as though it could be an issue with the turbo seals, they do tend to be a bit weak on the Freelander 2 2.2 diesel. Unfortunately these are not available separately and you would be looking at close to £1,000 for a new turbo plus approximately 3 hours labour, so you would be best to factor this into the price.

Would you see a well maintained 2010 Freelander 2 XS TD4 Auto with 118k miles as a risky buy please? It’s had a new engine (2 years ago), and seems in fine condition, but I’m wondering if you could comment on it’s likely future please?
Hi Russell,
The Freelander 2 2.2 diesel is a great vehicle. There are some issues with the camshaft and the inlet manifold flaps but the camshaft should be the upgraded one if a new engine has been fitted. They are generally very reliable vehicles and the engines can take very high mileage. If you get it I’m sure you will love it. Obviously without seeing it it is difficult to comment on its likely future.
All the best,
Sue
0780 9575 421
I did like it, and have already ordered it, so your comments are very confirming, thank you!
🙂
Any particular tips as to keeping it healthy for another 100,000 miles??
Hi Russell,
Congratulations on your purchase.
The main tip to keep it healthy is to always use only the Land Rover engine oil when servicing it, the Freelander 2’s are very sensitive to their oil. Keep to the service schedule with oils and coolant and you should have many years of trouble free motoring. If you get and strange electrical issues check if a second earth has been fitted, if not then it is worth fitting one.
If you have any questions about her just give us a shout.
All the best,
Sue

Having now driven it, there’s a whine coming from the back that I can’t pinpoint, but am wondering whether it’s diff related. Of course, I don’t even know if it’s abnormal, but would imagine so…….
It is basically constant at any speed, only really stops when off the throttle but not engine braking either.
Rear diff do you think? And if so, is it a ‘leave me stranded’ thing please??
Hi Russell,
If you have a whine from the back it is most likely the rear diff. It will get worse over time but on the Freelander 2 we have never known one fail completely and leave anybody stranded, you will just find it too irritating eventually. We completely reconditioned the rear diffs and can remove, recondition and refit within the day – bit of a long “while you wait” but you can wait for it – total cost including VAT £750 (or we can ship to you to have it fitted locally, £510 plus £35 shipping), just to give you some idea of costs.

What’s the easiest way to repair the silver knob/handle for the central air vents in a 2007 Freelander TD4? The silver part came loose and the back of it is behind the grille/vents. Can the whole unit come out easily to get at the piece that’s behind the vents?
Hi Ray,
Unfortunately without checking this on our own Freelander 2 we are not sure, and we are currently 4x4ing with a Freelander 1 around Morocco. We will have a look when we get back, if you are still having a problem, which is the 13th April.

Hi,
This might seem a silly question, but are all Freelander 2 2.2 TD4 models equipped with constant four-wheel drive? Is Traction Control the same thing? I’ve just purchased a 2007 model.
Thanks,
Ray
Hi Ray,
If it is the TD4 model then it is a four wheel drive using the haldex active-on-demand system. Traction control is not the same thing, traction control makes sure the wheel does not spin when setting off, whereas four wheel drive allows the transfer of power to all four wheels.

Hi, I have found a 2.2 freelander 2 td4 hse with 131k on the clock, first registered February 2010 with 1 owner and all the mileage has been on the motorway. It has FSH from a registered dealer and Inside it is immaculate with only some minor kiddie wear evident. The body is generally in good condition with all 4 corners intact. The rear passenger wheel arch has been dinged and needs pulling out and painting and the passenger door handle has been hit and is loose. The door bodywork appears intact and the door still opens with the central locking ok. It has never towed and never been off road. I know the owner, a banker and family man and take him at his word. My first question is what should I be paying for this and secondly, is there anything specific I should be looking out for? Thanks in advance for your help, it is greatly appreciated.
Hi Gareth,
In the UK the Parkers price guide for this vehicle in poor condition (due to the ding) is £11,115 and in good condition is £13,310 for a private sale on a 10 plate. On a 60 plate it is £11,425 for poor condition and £13,680 in good condition.
If you get the Freelander I am sure you will enjoy.

My central locking is not working. 2007 TD4 diesel
Hi Brian,
Did it suddenly stop working? Is it not locking / unlocking anything? Will it still start the Freelander?
It is worth checking the fuse for the radio receiver.
Have you got a spare remote you can try? This could tell you if it is the remote itself or the vehicle.
Have you docked the remote lately to make sure it is charged?
Some infrared or radio signals can interfere with the remote, where you are trying to use it, is it a place you have successfully used the remote before?

Hi
TD4 2003 80k miles
Can you give me a quote please for whatever service is best
Thanks
Hi Mikey,
Thank you for your enquiry.
At 2003 and 80K miles your service schedule should be going according to age rather than mileage.
Which service you require could depend on which service was last carried out.
The standard 11 year service is an A service and is £218.94 including VAT, this includes upgrading the crankcase breather filter to a BMW filter..
If your fuel filter was not changed last year then this is overdue (£40.40 including VAT), as would be the automatic gearbox oil if your Freelander is automatic (£115.87 including VAT).
Your Coolant and Brake fluid should have been changed in the past two years, otherwise these should also be done (c.£50 each including VAT).
At 80k miles have you had the viscous coupling unit (VCU) changed? Although this is not on a service schedule it is important to change it approximately every 70k miles to ensure it does not damage the rest of your drive train. To replace the VCU with a reconditioned unit, GKN bearings (the cheap bearings just do not last so are not worth fitting) and fitting is £520 including VAT; or a new VCU, GKN bearings and fitting is £640 including VAT.

Sue

I have been quoted by a local garage for a timing belt change on my 2010, 60,000 mile freelander 2 td4 2.2 diesel during a 10.000 mi service,I; puzzled understood it has a chain. Can you help?
Hello Peter,
The Freelander 2 does have a timing belt and not a chain, however it is not scheduled to be changed until 150,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first, so you are certainly not due for it to be changed yet.
You also state that it was a 10,000 mile service; the service schedule for a Freelander 2 is every 15,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first (although an oil change every six months never goes amiss!)

My freelander 2 has stated showing a message service 25 but I can’t find this in the manual Any body know what this means please Barb
Hi Barb,
This is indicating an upcoming service is required. Along with the “Service” sign and the “25” you should also have either a clock showing above the service sign, in which case this indicates the service is due in 25 days, or you will have a sign saying “Miles” to the right of the service sign, in which case the service is due in 25 miles. Once the number goes negative this means your service is overdue.
All the best,
Sue

According to my Freelander 2 service book, there is no time interval for services. The service indicator says when a service ie required and counts down the mileage. The service book does not give a mileage or time schedule
Hi Peter,
The official service schedule from Land Rover states the Freelander 2 should be serviced every 12 months or 15,000 miles, whichever comes first. The mileage interval is higher than many other vehicles (the Freelander 1 is 12,000 miles or 12 months). If this service schedule is not adhered to Land Rover do tend to use it to withdraw any warranty. So for that reason, and the fact that no vehicle should really be left over 12 months without a service, I would make sure you follow these. If in doubt, please drop into your local Land Rover dealer and enquire.
All the best,
