Is Your Freelander Holding Back on You?
Do You Want Your Beloved Freelander to have Power Again?
We Can Help!
A Freelander Viscous Coupling Unit (VCU) should be replaced approximately every 70,000 miles – otherwise you risk doing damage to the rest of the drive train (IRD, Rear differential and even gearbox – expensive repairs!)
Why does my VCU need replacing regularly?
Your VCU is a sealed unit containing a viscous fluid. Over time the viscous fluid becomes thick and the prop shaft no longer rotates at the required speed.
This puts tremendous strain on the drive train, and, if not replaced in a timely manner, will eventually cause damage to the rest of the drive train.
How can I tell if my VCU needs replacing?
There is no definitive test for the VCU as it is a sealed unit, so the condition of the viscous fluid cannot be checked.
If your VCU has passed its usable life your Freelander will feel as though it is holding back on you, especially when turning corners on full lock.
Although a number of sites on the internet suggest different methods for checking the condition of the VCU, none of these are a reliable test. To avoid damage to the rest of your drive train you should ensure that your VCU is replaced regularly – approximately every 70,000 miles.
WARNING: If you buy a second hand viscous coupling unit (VCU) or prop shaft because your viscous coupling unit (VCU) is beyond its usable life, there is no way of telling what the condition of the viscous fluid in your replacement VCU – we strongly recommend that you DO NOT replace your viscous coupling unit (VCU) with a used unit.

How much is it for a new VCU for a 2002 Freelander 1, V6 to Australia ?
Thanks,
Neil.
Hi Neil,
It is not possible to buy the V6 VCU’s new, we can, however, provide you with a reconditioned VCU for your Freelander. The cost of the reconditioned unit when you are not returning your old VCU is £330. If you would also like the bearings these are £55 for the pair. The shipping cost to Australia is £95. Hence the total is £425 without bearings or 480 with bearings.
All the best,
Sue

Hi Craig,
This does tend to be a problem with the Freelanders and to be honest we have not really found what the cause is – we keep meaning to do a few experiments but never quite get the time to do them.
What we generally advise is to drill a small hole in the bottom of the compartment so the water can drain away.

Sue

Hi, I need a VCU for my 2001 V6. As well as the V6 VCU (which is on its way out!) I also have the entire prop and VCU from my old 1999 XDi, which AFAIK is fine apart from the bearings and a split gaiter. Could you maybe do a better deal if I send both VCUs? (Prop as well if you want it!)
Thanks
Hi Paul,
Thank you for your enquiry.
We can give you £25 off for the return of a second VCU. With regard to the prop shaft, if it is the front prop shaft gaiter which is split then unfortunately it is of no use to us. If the front prop shaft is in tact we can give you £40 off for this.

Sue

Hi there do I have to send u my old VCU before u send me a re-condition one as this would mean me having no car to get to work for a few days.
Or do u send me a unit out and allow me to send it back to u in a allotted time
Thanks
Hi Terry,
Thank you for your enquiry.
No, we can send the reconditioned unit to you first and you have two weeks to return your old unit, just give me a call or drop me an email when it is ready for collection and I will send a courier in to pick it up.

Morning.
Have just got a 2004 petrol freelander, full service history, 72000 miles, cam belt and head gasket done.
I ask the seller if the VCU had been done, and they said they only change them if needs be, and as far as they are concerned the vcu on the car is ok.
I drove the car this morning for about 5 miles mainly on straight roads with a couple of rounderbouts, stopped and got under the car to feel the vcu temperature,
It was not even warm……does this indicate that the vcu is pretty much in good condition?
Or maybe not even working at all?
Regards
James
Hi James,
Congratulations on your new purchase.
Good to hear your are aware of the VCU issues. The fact the VCU is not heating up at all is a very good sign and means your tyres are matched, so no issues there. It does not, however, mean the VCU is operating correctly. Over time the viscous fluid inside the VCU thickens up , and if left it will seize and cause damage to the rest of your drive train. We recommend changing them at about 70,000 miles. The only real test for how effective your VCU is operating is to drive it on full lock, in either forward or reverse, and see how much it is holding the Freelander back. You will feel some resistance as it is a 4×4, however it should not feel as though the brakes are on, if it does then change the VCU as soon as possible.
I hope this helps.
All the best,
Sue

Morning sue, can you please confirm £275.00 for a vcu on a freelander td4 2005, i will also need all bearing and moutings, also if possible can you advise if the prop should be re balanced.
Thanks in advance
Bryn
Morning Bryn,
Thank you for your enquiry.
Yes, it is £275 for a VCU for your TD4 2005. The bearings, in their housings, are £65 for the pair. If you wanted them shipped to you the UK shipping charge is £35 which includes shipping the reconditioned unit to you and your old VCU back to us. Hence the total would be £340 including VAT.
No, you do not need to re balance the prop shaft.
All the best,
Sue

I just need to know if there is any possibility to order a VCU to Tunisia, how we can pay for it and how much ?
Hi Mohamed,
Certainly we can ship a VCU to Tunisia.
The best option is to purchase a new VCU as then you avoid the return shipping costs, which for Tunisia are higher than the price difference between the reconditioned VCU and the new VCU.
The cost would be:
New VCU: £330
Shipping: £120
Total £450
We accept payment by credit card (tel: +44-780-9575-421), by bank transfer to:
Bank: Santander
Account Name: FreelanderSpecialist.com

or by Paypal.

Hello,
I have a problem probably gearbox related, as i change gea from 3 to 2 or from 2 to 1, i get a whining noise as if the syncro is not working (i would suspect on other machines ive driven). Is it the gearbox and is it smthing serious? Or can it be cured? I have a 1998 1,8 petrol freelander around 110000 miles on clock and propshaft removed, waiting for an ordered vcu at the moment. So 2wd. And i think the vcu was original, as i bought it around 2000miles ago. And when i changed the oil in rear differential after buying, there was just dust inside…
Hello Andres,
This could be the gear box or it could just be the thrust bearing. If it is the gear box then the cheapest option would be to purchase a second hand gearbox (around £150, we do sometimes have these available) and replace it, reconditioning the gearbox would be more expensive.
All the best,
Sue

Hi CJ,
There is not much difference in the vibration so in theory you could use the V6 VCU on your TD4 without ill effects. It is not, however, something we have tried doing.
All the best,
Sue

Thanks for the reply. I heard that Land Rover deleted the damper later on and that people have run without the damper with no ill effect. Does the V6 VCU fit otherwise?
I have heard that the V6 has a different viscous coupling. What is the difference and can it be used on a TD4?
Hi CJ,
Yes, the V6 is a different viscous coupling, it does not contain the damper that the other viscous couplings have and can sometimes have different brackets. No, you should not use a V6 viscous coupling on a TD4 and you should always be careful of using a used viscous coupling unless you are sure of the mileage it has done, since viscous coupling units are only really any good for around 70,000 miles before they require the viscous fluid to be changed.
All the best,
Sue

Have an 02 serengeti petrol freelander that has done 75,000 miles. When turning left or right, at tight corners or tight roundabout fairly quickly, get a juddering noise from what appears to be the back of the car.
As you seem very knowledgable with freelanders, wondered if you could help. Taken to garage and they say there is no problem?!
Thanks
Paula
Hi Paula,
You do have a problem, and if it is not dealt with it could turn into a very big problem. This sounds very much like an issue with the VCU (viscous coupling unit), have you had that changed recently? If not, you will need to change it as a matter of urgency, and I would advise that you remove the prop shaft immediately to avoid any further damage to the drive train.
The VCU’s on the Freelander last for about 70,000 miles, then the fluid inside them becomes too thick and starts to put a strain on the rest of the drive train. When this happens it finds the weakest link and that it was breaks. Very often this is the IRD / Transfer Box, however, in your case it sounds as though it could be the rear differential. If you remove the prop shaft immediately with any luck the rear differential may still be OK. If you do need a VCU we can provide a reconditioned unit for £275, it is advisable to also replace the bearings for the VCU as these can be difficult to remove from the old unit without damaging them. The VCU bearings are £65 for the pair and come fitted to the VCU. UK shipping is £35 which includes shipping the VCU to you and your old unit back to us, as these are sold on an exchange basis. We can also provide a fitting service for £445, including the VCU, the bearings and the fitting. If the worst comes to the worst we do also supply reconditioned rear differentials.
If you have changed your VCU recently then you need to check the VCU bearings to ensure they are balanced properly and check your rear differential.
If we can be of any further help please do not hesitate to contact us.
All the best,
Sue

Hi Sue, I have owned my 05 td4 Freelander auto for only 2 months and have noticed a noise I hope you are able to diagnose. I would describe the noise as sounding like a baby seal !!! It occurs when manoeuvring at low speed in car parks, turning either left or right. Oddly it seems to only happen on flat car parks & not any with an incline. My garage has pressure-washed the suspension & replaced D-bushes?? The noise remains & my ‘battle’ with the garage continues. I do appreciate this is nothing to do with VCU’s or IRD’s but am at a loss.
Thank you,
Jay
Hi Jay,
It’s a bit of a difficult one to diagnose without seeing it. Perhaps you could give us a little more information then hopefully we will be able to point you in the right direction.
Firstly, where does the sound seem to be coming from? Is it the front, the rear or fairly central?
What mileage is the Freelander on?
What tyres do you have on the Freelander?
When you are doing low speed in the car park, turning left or right, does it feel as though it is holding back at all? You say it does not make the noise when you are on an incline, is this the same whether you are facing down the incline or up the incline?
If you can give us this extra information we will do our best to help.
All the best,
Sue

hi
i have a 99 freelander 2.0 xdi 5door. The vcu propshaft is removed and therefore drives as a 2wd. But recently a noise has appeared whenin driving in gears 1 to 3 clutch on or off.. the sound is a consistant gear mechanical noise..
can only descibe it like the sound a pushbike wheel makes if you have a stick placed in the spokes and you make it sound like a motobike while cycling.
Ive been told its the gearbox.. would an oil change be sufficient or a complete renewal of the gearbox (over a grand!) ? I am assuming somthing is getting tighter in the lower gears… the vehical has done 122k miles..
otherwise could i do a part ex for another landy freelander.. :/
regards
Hi Alex,
This sounds more as though it could be your IRD / transfer box, did the garge check this? Even though your prop shaft is removed, if the IRD had been damaged this could get worse over time and then start making the type of noises you are describing.
No problem part exchanging for another Freelander if you decide to go this route.

Sue

Hi Reeveo,
The tyres certainly can cause the whining, especially if they are the chunky ones. We’ve got our fingers crossed for you that it is just the VCU.
All the best,
Sue
0780 9575 421
Morning Sue,
After discussions with the garage your suggested course of action is what will happen. They think the whining is the tyres and I definately do not have any knocking noises, it will be a process of elimination. Lets hope I’ve caught things early.
Many thanks
Reeveo
I would like your thoughts regarding a whining noise comming from the rear wheels of my 51 plate TD4 (69000m). I thought it might be the bearings.
I have been told by the local LR specialist that the IRD and VCU need replacing but reading your forum comments could it be the VCU only?
The tyres also are ‘ripping’ on the outer edge.
Thank you
Hi Reeveo,
Given the mileage of your Freelander I would recommend you change the VCU as these generally only last around 70,000 miles and you are very close to that at 69,000 miles.
If you have no noise coming from the front of the Freelander what makes the garage think the IRD has a problem? With a whining coming from the rear the first things to check are the VCU bearings, the rear differential bearings and then the rear differential itself. The ripping of the tyres can be caused by the VCU, so that is the first thing to start with and if you are lucky it may be your only problem. We would recommend dropping your prop shaft as soon as possible to avoid any further damage to the rest of your drive train.
If we can be of any further help please do not hesitate to contact us.
All the best,
Sue

Hi there. I require my vcu changing but am worried about purchasing a “reconditioned” one. As you say, the unit is a sealed unit with no access to the fluid or internal workings that adgitate the fluid. How can I be sure that a reconditioned unit will transfer the drive from front to back as designed without purchasing the unit, fitting it, and then taking on to the field to see if it works. My concern is purchasing something that is sealed, so you cant see whats been done inside, only to find that at a later date that the unit purchased is no better than removing the vcu and using the vehicle as a 2 wheel drive only.
Regards,
Meg
Hi Meg,
I can certainly understand your concerns as I know there are some reconditioned VCU’s out there that do use the incorrect fluid and leave your Freelander in two wheel drive. With our reconditioned VCU you do have full four wheel drive functionality and we have never had a return on one of these units. It is impossible to know when looking at a reconditioned unit whether it is filled with the correct fluid or not, and hence whether it will power the Freelander in four wheel drive. We have a 12 month warranty on our VCU’s, if in that time you find it is not allowing the Freelander to operate in four wheel drive then we will happily replace the unit for you.
I am happy to guarantee that these units transfer the drive from front to back as designed.
All the best,
Sue

Hi Sue
driving my freelander millenium the other day then a loud bang from underneath(thought i’d hit something) Then it started making a terrible/grinding/crunching noise. Managed to drive it home at slow speed. Rear diff had gone so replaced that no difference, took propshaft off still making noise only thing left is gaerbox i thought, could it be VCU and IRD problem car is too good to scrap. any advice, thanks Gary
Hi Gary,
If the noise appeared to be coming from the front of the vehicle it certainly could be the IRD unit. What mileage are you on? Even with the prop shaft off, if the IRD is severely damaged it will still make a noise. The first place to look is definitely the IRD, and given that your rear differencial was also damaged the cause is highly likely to be the VCU. We can provide both of these units reconditioned if required.
All the best,
Sue

Hi Su,
We have a freelander but seems to have loss of umpth when we need to slow down, like it stops to a halt rather than rolling.
and it smells like burning oil when i stop up somewhere
Hi Barry,
This definitely sounds like your VCU needs changing, how many miles has your Freelander done? The smell of burning oil could very well be caused by the flange for the front prop shaft having broken and throwing oil onto the exhaust – this can often happen when the VCU goes – so check that flange and check the drive shaft gaiters. We would strongly recommend that you remove the prop shaft until you replace the VCU to avoid any damage to the rest of your drive train.
All the best,
Sue

I have a Freelander 1.8 2001 and have a problem with a noise/judder from the rear wheels when doing sharp turns, even at lower speeds. Sounds like the wheels are “skipping” or “jumping”.
Had the rear diff mounts, changed about 18 months ago, and again (for original LR parts) last week as this was wrongly diagnosed by local garage.
Also had the damper on the vcu and both vcu bearings changed about 6months ago.
VCU Definitely isn’t completely seized as tape on front/rear props rotate at different rates.
Does this sound like symptoms of vcu problems?
Hi Steve,
Unfortunately this sounds like a problem with the rear diff itself, so that’s where we would recommend you look for the problem. Open the filler plug for the rear diff and check if it has metal pieces on the magnet. We do supply reconditioned rear diffs if required.
All the best,
Sue

Hi. I have had a grinding / growling transmission noise for some time (1.8 2002 Freelander). I suspected the IRD so removed prop and VCU. Noise quieter but still there. VCU is likely the original (105K! so likely stuffed). Is this likely to be IRD bearings shot due to transmission wind up?
Hi Matt,
Yes, unfortunately it sounds as though you have damage to the IRD unit caused by the VCU.
All the best,
Sue

when driving around 50mph i can feel a rumble comming from back ive been it could be diff or front prop any idears plz
Hi Les,
The rumbling could be coming from the rear diff mounts, the VCU bearings or the coupler on the VCU – these are the places we would check first.
All the best,
Sue

Hi James,
Apologies for the delay in responding, somehow some of my messages went missing froom my inbox – technology is not always as good as it seems!
Definitely try just replacing the VCU first, you may be lucky and have no damage to the IRD unit if the whirring is from the drive shaft. Once you change the VCU it will be clear if there is damage to the IRD as it will be making a noise.
All the best,
Sue
I have a 2001 Td4 Freelander, on investigation of a light whirring noise, as I turn a right hand corner. I have discovered a slight leak of fluid around the front CV joint, at the CV side of the drive-shaft’s nut’s collar. There is 15200 miles on the clock, and having read your comment’s I’d like to ask you; if changing the VCU (which I don’t believe was ever changed) would be a better option than replacing the IRD unit! I understand that oil seal’s within the IRD should need replacing!
Hi Sue,
Could you please tell me the price for VCU, bearings and fitting on a 2002 TD4?
Thanks
MarkH
Hi Mark,
Thank you for your enquiry.
The price for VCU, bearings and fitting on your TD4 is £445.
All the best,
Sue
hiSue,
please can you let me know when and Cost to install both the IRD and VCU,
OR
Cost/Postage for both to Nrth Ireland(UK)
Regards:
Gareth.
Hi Gareth,
A reconditioned IRD is £650 and a reconditioned VCU is £250 – if you would like the VCU bearingsalso, which would come fitted to the VCU, it is an extra £60.
Shipping of both the IRD and VCU to Northern Ireland is £95, which includes shipping both the units from us to you, and shipping your damaged units back from Northern Ireland to us.
Fitting of both the IRD and VCU depends upon which model of Freelander you have. If you are having both fitted at the same time we fit the VCU for free. The fitting costs are:
1.8 Petrol: £295
2.0 Diesel: £395
2.5 Petrol: £445
All the best,
Sue

Hi Glauco,
Provided we know when to expect the old unit we can come to an arrangement that is convenient to you.
The shipping to New Zealand is £150 to send the reconditioned unit to you. It would be the same amount again to return your old unit back to us, hence it would be cheaper for you to pay the non-return surcharge of £100 than to return the unit.
The total cost, therefore, would be:
Reconditioned VCU: £250
Non-return surcharge: £100
Shipping to New Zealand: £150
TOTAL: £500
All the best,
Sue

Dear Sirs
how many days i must ship my old VCU after I receive the reconditioned one? Can you please quote freight to Auckland New Zealand? cheers
Glauco
Hi Mahinda,
Yes they are common to both manual and automatic models as both have the same system on their drive train.
All the best,
Sue
are these (IRD)&(VCU)problems & solutions common for both Auto & Manual free landers.
Hi Mahinnda,
It depends what the problem with your IRD is. The most common cause of damage to an IRD unit is through the VCU being beyond its usable life, however it is possible to damage the IRD independently of the VCU, particularly if it has a loss of oil through a crack or hole.
It is possible to replace a 1.8 petrol IRD with one from a 2.0 diesel TD4 model. It is NOT possible to replace a 2.5 petrol IRD with any other IRD unit.
All the best,
Sue
is it bossible to replace free lander(petrol)IRD to to a free lander 2.0 diesel TD4. Thank you.
recently my free lander was sddenly lost it’s drive. At the moment a technical investigation has revieled The (IRD)unit needing replacement together with few other parts except (VCU)could it be possible to rectify the problem replacing (IRD)without(VCU)Thank you.
Hi Ma Sandland,
The cost of replacing the viscous coupling unit is £250 for the unit and £50 for the fitting. It is advised to replace the VCU bearings at the same time as these can be difficult to remove without damaging them, these are £45 for the pair. Hence the total for the VCU, the bearings and fitting is £345.
All the best,
Sue
Can you please let me no the cost of replacing the VCU unit on a jan 2001 18 petrol freelander including the cost of your fitting service.
….and it smells like burning oil when we stop up somewhere
cheers
Sheila
Hi Su,
We have a freelander but seems to have loss of umpth when we need to slow down, like it stops to a halt rather than rolling?
Hope that makes sense?
cheers
Sheila
my back wheel not turning what could go wrong. I jack up the car and start it only the front tire rotating at high or low speed.
Hi Janting,
You are obviously getting no drive to the back wheels, so either your IRD unit or you diff has gone.
All the best,
Sue
Hi Craig,
To ship a VCU to Poland is £120 – this includes shipping the reconditioned unit from the UK to Poland and shipping your old unit from Poland to the UK. This shipping time is generally 2 – 5 days.
The reconditioned VCU is £250. If you also want the two bearings, which would come already fitted to the VCU, it is an additional £30 – these are new bearings in a reconditioned housing. Currently we have approximately a one week waiting list on VCU’s.
We accept cash, credit cards, bank transfer or a UK cheque (which would need to clear before the item is posted).
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sue,
Please can you let me know how much it will cost for you to ship a VCU to Poland and how long it will take to get here. Also, what methods of payment do you have available?
Hi Chris,
I am really sorry but I am unable to help you with this one. We actually send our units to an engineering works that has all the equipment to be able to change the oil, so I don’t actually know what it is or where they get it from.
All the best,
Sue
I reconditioned my viscous coupling units, but I would like find the new viscous fluid Thank you by advence
