Is Your Freelander Clonking or grinding?
Do You Want Your Beloved Freelander to run smooth and quiet again?
We Can Help!
If your Freelander Transfer Box / IRD Unit is damaged we can provide you with a reconditioned unit for only £650.
What has caused my Transfer Box / IRD Unit to be damaged?
In most cases damage to your transfer box / IRD unit is caused by not replacing your VCU in a timely manner.
The VCU is a sealed unit, half way along your prop shaft, that contains a viscous fluid. Since this is a sealed unit it is not possible to check, or routinely change, the viscous fluid. It is, therefore, recommended you change the VCU approximately every 70,000 miles.
Over time the viscous fluid in the VCU becomes thick and the prop shaft no longer rotates at the required speed. This puts tremendous strain on the drive train, and, if not replaced in a timely manner, will eventually cause damage to the rest of the drive train – such as your transfer box / IRD unit.
How can I tell if my Transfer Box / IRD Unit needs replacing?
Generally you will hear a clonking or grinding noise when you put your foot on, or take your foot off the accelerator, or when you turn corners, particularly in reverse.
You may find that you intermittently lose drive, followed by a loud banging or grinding noise.
Warning: If your transfer box / IRD unit has failed because of your VCU then you will need to either replace the VCU at the same time or leave the prop shaft off and operate in front wheel drive only (this is not possible with a 2.5 litre petrol V6 Freelander), otherwise you will damage your replacement Transfer Box / IRD Unit again within a short period of time.
What is a Reconditioned Transfer Box / IRD Unit?
Our reconditioned Transfer Boxes / IRD Units have been fully dismantled, inspected and fitted with replacement parts.
Once opened all of the parts showing any signs of wear – usually the crown wheel & pinion, associated bearings and cooling plate, are replced with new parts. Everything in the unit is inspected and tested to ensure it is fully functional and shows no signs of defect.
Can you ship Worldwide?
Yes, we will ship anywhere in the world (providing we can find a courier who will do it!)
The shipping prices, fully insured, including shipping the reconditioned Transfer Box / IRD Unit from us in the U.K. to your country, and shipping your old damaged Transfer Box / IRD Unit from your country to us in the U.K. are:

Do I need to return my damaged Transfer Box / IRD Unit?
Yes, these Transfer Boxes / IRD Unit’s are sold on an exchange basis. You will need to return your damaged Transfer Box / IRD Unit to us or pay a £200 non-return surcharge.
Your damaged Transfer Box / IRD Unit is suitable as an exchange unit provided there are no cracks or holes in the casing.
The shipping costs include the cost of returning your damaged Transfer Box / IRD Unit to us – so there is no extra to pay for this. We will organise the courier, all you have to do is tell us when it will be ready to be collected.
If you want your reconditioned Transfer Box / IRD Unit delivered before returning your damaged unit (so the old one can be taken out at the same time the new one is fitted), no problem, the £200 surcharge will be refunded when we receive your old unit.
Are all Freelander Transfer Boxes / IRD Unit’s the same?
No, in particular the Freelander 2.5 litre V6 petrol Transfer Box / IRD Unit is very different.
So please make sure you tell us which model of Freelander you have when you place your order and we will make sure you get the correct unit.
How do I get my Transfer Box / IRD Unit fitted?
Need your reconditioned Transfer Box / IRD Unit fitted? For the complete hassle free service, bring your Freelander to us and we will fit the Transfer Box / IRD Unit for you.
Take away all the hassle of getting your Freelander back on the road, bring it to us and we will:
- Supply a reconditioned Transfer Box / IRD Unit
- Fit your reconditioned Transfer Box / IRD Unit
- Fill your Transfer Box / IRD Unit with the correct oil
and have you back on the road again in no time!
The total fitted cost (including the Transfer Box / IRD Unit and oil) is £845 incl. VAT.
If your car does not drive and you need to get it to us to fit your reconditioned Transfer Box / IRD Unit why not try:
- Phoning your breakdown recovery service, if you have one. These will sometimes transport your car for free, or at a reduced rate.
- Giving us a call on 0780 9575 421 and we will arrange to transport your car to us for a cost of £1.80 per mile (calculated one way only to IP26 4RH). We can collect from anywhere in Europe (ferry crossings will be charged additionally where applicable).
The cost of supply only for the reconditioned Transfer Box / IRD Unit, excluding shipping, is £650 (incl. VAT).
I’m worried about my VCU?
If you are worried about whether you need to replace your VCU check the mileage on your Freelander. If you have done over 70,000 miles and you have no record of the VCU having been changed then this is likely to have been the cause of damaging your Transfer Box / IRD Unit. Any concerns just give us a call on
0780 9575 421
to discuss your symptoms and / or make an appointment for us to have a look at your Freelander.
We also supply reconditioned viscous coupling units (VCU’s) and rear differentials – so no matter what damage may have been done, we can fix it!
Do you supply 2 wheel drive transfer boxes / IRD’s?
Yes we do. Please be aware that it is more difficult to convert your Freelander back to four wheel drive if you purchase a two wheel drive transfer box / IRD.
Our two wheel drive reconditioned transfer box / IRD is £450 incl. VAT, and fitting is £195 incl. VAT.
Do you have the Transfer Boxes / IRD’s in stock?
Unfortunately, due to the high demand for Transfer Boxes / IRD Units we do generally have a bit of a waiting list – often it may only be a couple of days, however during high demand periods it can be over a week.
For an estimate of when your Transfer Box / IRD Unit can be delivered give us a call on 0780 9575 421.
How can I pay for my reconditioned Transfer Box / IRD Unit?
The painful bit I know! But we like to give you as much choice as possible, so we accept:
- Cash (If you are collecting it)
- All Major Credit Cards (including AMEX) – over the phone or on collection
- Direct Bank Transfer
- Paypal
- Cheques – provided they clear before delivery or collection
What if something goes wrong?
We don’t like things going wrong, and you certainly wouldn’t! Quality is important to us, but in the event that something does go wrong you have our
12 month, unlimited mileage warranty.
Our warranty covers you for a replacement Transfer Box / IRD Unit in the event of any failure of a component due to unforseen circumstances.
IMPORTANT: Because it is common that damage to the Transfer Box / IRD Unit is caused by the VCU, your warranty will only be valid if you either replace the VCU at the same time OR leave the prop shaft off your Freelander – leaving the same VCU on your vehicle will almost certainly damage any replacement Transfer Box / IRD Unit in a short period of time. If you replace your VCU please ensure you keep your receipt to validate your warranty.

I own a Freelander 2 2013 and the diagnosis in two shops is that the Transfer box is broken and needs to be replaced. I’d like to have a quotation to have it shipped to Panama (Central America).
The car has 59,000 kms so I was wondering if the CVU is damaged and needs replacement too. What is the prices of this CVU?
Can you give me a quotation broken down in prices of each item?
I also need to know time to be delivered once I place the order.
Thanks and Regards
Martin
Hi Martin,
Thank you for your enquiry. I will send you a quotation through email.
Your Freelander does not have a VCU, the 4×4 system is operated by a Haldex. It is worth servicing the Haldex every 2 to 3 years – it is not on a Land Rover service schedule so is unlikely to have been done.
What condition are your tyres in? Are they all matched – same make, size, model, tread depth remaining and air pressure? Much of the damage done to the drive train can be attributed to a mismatch of tyres.
Shipping to Panama takes approximately one week, however delays can occur with your local Customs office.
All the best,
Sue

Hi there
I have recently purchased a 1.8K Freelander sans prop & VCU. My assumption is that were the IRD to have been damaged, one would hear that damage despite the props being off as the IRD is still in use (despite not being connected to the rear wheels)?
Do I purchase props + VCU regardless or is there a method of testing the IRD?
Hi Tristan,
Congratulations on your purchase.
Often, when you remove the prop shaft, if there is damage to the IRD or rear differential they go quite as the strain has been removed. They can remain quite for some time but gradually will start to show the signs of damage even without a prop shaft fitted. Hence, if the drivetrain is quite with the prop shaft off you cannot guarantee there is no damage to either the IRD or the rear differential.
To test for damage check if there is any play in the pinion. It is also worth draining a little of the oil to see if there are any metal pieces (the drain plug of the IRD is magnetic and so if metal pieces exist they will show on the drain plug).
All the best,
Sue

Hi. Recently I am hearing a knocking noise coming from yhe front end on the engine but from 3rd gear up and at around 1500rpm up anf from 40mph up from said gear up. Can hear it only when foot on accelerator and goes away when I take it off. It knocks faster when accelerating but always goes away when taking foot off the accelerator. Turning and reversing makes no noise as it is only from 3rd gear up and from mentioned speed. Vcu has been replaced and full service afterwards. Oil was clear no metal.
Is it IRD related or more cv joint related? And can the ird be checked on the car witbout removing?
Hi Charlot,
Does the noise appear to be coming from the engine or from the suspension? Which engine does your Freelander have? If you are stationary and rev the engine past 2,000 rpm do you hear the knocking?
It does not sound like the IRD, and the best way to check the IRD is to drain a little oil from it and check for metal particles, as you have done. If the oil is clear then the IRD is fine.
All the best,
Sue

I note on your site you say a Freelander V6 cannot run in front wheel drive only. Are you able to tell me why not? .
Hi Chris,
You can actually run the V6 in front wheel drive only however you will get more engine movement with the prop shaft removed and since it is a large engine and it is unusual for the V6 to have drivetrain issues, the automatic gearbox and slightly different VCU tend to be a more robust combination, we tend not to recommend it.

Sue

Hi Junior,
We can supply you with an IRD unit with a non return surcharge, which means you do not have to return your old unit. Being outside the EU you do not have to pay the VAT, therefore the prices are:
Reconditioned IRD: £541.67
Non-return Surcharge: £166.67

Please be aware you need to determine the reason why your IRD unit has failed, which is often due to the viscous coupling unit (VCU) being used past its usable life of 70,000 miles / 120,000 km. If this is the reason you will need to either replace the VCU or leave the propshaft off and operate in front wheel drive.

Si esta es la razón por la que tendrá que reemplazar el VCU o dejar el árbol de transmisión apagado y operar en tracción delantera.

I have a 2006 freelander 2.0 diesel auto with only 26000 miles. The problem is on hard right or hard left lock i get this clunk sound which seems like its coming from the backend, but it doesnt happen in reverse.I was told its the IRD Transfer box,is that right or is it something more. Thanks
Hi Robert,
If it is coming from the back end then it is not the IRD as this is in the front. It sounds much more like the rear differential centre bush, so get this checked out first – a much simpler and cheaper issue.

i will send some pictures to your email(sue@freelanderspecialist.com) just to confirm that is the ONE I NEED FOR MY CAR.
hope you can answer me very soon.
thank you
Hi Arsh,
Thank you for your enquiry.
Yes, this would be the correct IRD for your Freelander. The reconditioned IRD is £650 and the shipping to Sweden is £95 including shipping the reconditioned unit from the UK to Sweden and your damaged unit from Sweden to the UK. UK shipping is £35.
If your mileage is around 70,000 miles please be aware that the cause of the damage to your IRD is likely to be the viscous coupling unit (VCU), which will need changing at the same time.
All the best,
Sue

hi looking at buying a freelander td 42001 in need of new ird and vcu could there be other damage to rear diff ect that i should consider before i commit to buy
regards jon
Hi Jon,
The other parts to check before you commit to the purchase are the rear differential and the gearbox. It is however more common that only the IRD is affected.

Hi Salvatore,
We can provide the damper kit for your 1.8 Freelander for £95 plus £25 shipping to Italy.
Please note that just changing the damper unit is not sufficient if the VCU has done over 70,000 miles (approximately 112,000 km) as the issue after this time is with the viscous fluid which is sealed inside the viscous coupling unit.
All the best,
Sue

Ciao Salvatore,

Sue, VCU needed to my 2.5 V6 Freelander,
What the cost including shipping would be and how long it might take to get it here:
Williams Lake, British Columbia, Canada
Hi Peter,
A VCU for your Freelander is £229.17 to Canada. The shipping is £60, however the shipping for your return unit would be more than the non-return surcharge of £100 so it would be cheaper to pay this. If you wanted the VCU bearings too these are £54.17 for the pair and would come fitted to the VCU.
Hence the total would be:
£389.17 without bearings
£443.34 with bearings
The transit time is quoted as 2 – 5 days.
We accept payment by card over the telephone (+44-780-9575-421), by bank transfer or by Paypal.
All the best,
Sue

I have a freelander 1999 model , the IRD is bad and need replacing along with the VCU and also the shafts. Do you ship to St. Lucia (Caribbean) and what would be the total cost for parts including the shipping
Hi Sarah,
This does sound like signs of the head gasket going. Since you also have problems with your IRD is it that there is signs of oil in the water or water in the oil? If there is oil in the water it is possible that this could be caused by the IRD unit. If you drain the IRD and get significantly less than 1.1 litres of oil from it then it could have been cross contaminating with the water through the cooling plate. If it is that you have water in the oil then it is likely to be the head gasket. A modified multi layer head gasket kit with the bolts is £50.
A reconditioned IRD is £541.67 plus £200 non-return surcharge (it is cheaper to pay this than to ship your old unit back) and a reconditioned VCU is £229.17 plus £100 non-return surcharge, and for GKN VCU bearings it would be £100 for the pair or the cheaper bearings are £54.17 for the pair. Is it your prop shaft that has a problem or the drive shafts?
The shipping to St Lucia is £220 for the IRD and VCU. If you also required a prop shaft or drive shafts this may rise to £265.
The total therefore for a head gasket set, IRD, VCU and GKN bearings to St Lucia would be £1,440.84.
We can take payment by credit card, bank transfer or Paypal.
If you let me know which shafts you are looking for I will get you a price for them.
All the best,
Sue

Hi Mwanga,
Thank you for your enquiry.
The flashing F4 fault code indicates a gear box problem. The best thing is to have a diagnostic on the Freelander and see what it comes up with. The worst situation should be that you need a replacement gearbox.
All the best,
Sue

Hello Antoine,
A reconditioned IRD is £650 plus £95 shipping. The shipping includes shipping the reconditioned IRD from the UK to France and your old IRD from France to the UK.
A reconditioned VCU is £275 plus £95 shipping, again to include shipping the reconditioned unit from the UK to France and your old unit from France to the UK. You can also purchase the VCU bearings, fitted to the VCU, for £65 for the pair – these can be difficult to remove from your old VCU without damaging them.
If you order both parts together we could do the total shipping for £150 (providing the collection of your old units can be made from a business address, or the items can be taken to your local TNT depot), hence the total price would be:
Reconditioned IRD: £650
Reconditioned VCU: £275
VCU Bearings: £65 (if required)
Shipping: £150
TOTAL: £1140
We would need to know which model of Freelander you have, 1.8 Petrol, 2.0 diesel, 2.0 TD4 diesel or 2.5 V6 Petrol.
You can pay by credit card over the telephone (+44-780-9575-421) or with the card number, expirary date and security code sent in seperate emails. Alternatively you can pay by Paypal or bank transfer to:

Bonjour Antoine,

Hi Deva,
Thank you for your enquiry.
The price of the reconditioned transfer box is £650, shipping to Mauritius is £215 each way so it would be cheaper not to send your old unit back and pay the £200 surcharge.
The total would therefore be:
Reconditioned IRD: £650

Hi,
If I order an IRD and a VCU unit at the same time do I have to pay 160 pounds for EACH of them P&P to have it delivered to Greece?
Hi Petros,
If you order the two units, VCU and IRD, together then I can ship them for £200 all together – this includes shipping the reconditioned parts to you and shipping your old units back to us.
