Freelander 2.0 Diesel TD4 (200 – 2006) Service from just £248.94 incl. VAT
The Freelander 2.0 litre diesel TD4 (2000 – 2006) should be serviced every 12,000 miles (20,000 km) or every 12 months, which ever comes sooner.
The service schedule involves an A service and a B service.
The 12,000 mile (20,000 km) or 12 month service is an A service.
The 24,000 mile (40,000 km) or 24 month service is a B service.
The A and B services then alternate for the life of your Freelander.
In addition to the standard A and B services there are a few other items which need replacing at fixed intervals, these are:
- the coolant requires replacing every 36,000 miles (60,000 km) or 36 months (3 years);
- the brake fluid requires replacing every 36,000 miles (60,000 km) or 36 months (3 years);
- the fuel filter requires replacement every 48,000 miles (80,000 km) or 48 months (4 years);
- if you have the automatic gearbox then the gearbox oil requires replacing every 60,000 miles (100,000 km) or 60 months (5 years);
- the Poly V ancillary driving belt requires replacement every 96,000 miles (160,000 km) or 96 months (8 years);
- if you have a manual gearbox then the gearbox oil requires replacing every 96,000 miles (160,000 km) or 96 months (8 years).

In addition to the above servicing please remember that your Freelander requires the air bags replaced every ten years and the seatbelt pre-tensioners replaced every fifteen years.
Although not specified on any Land Rover service schedule, you also need to replace your viscous coupling unit approximately every 70,000 miles to avoid damage to the rest of your drive train.

When I drive my Freelander (Y48TBC) the power drops off and I involuntarily slow down. I lift the throttle and then reapply (sometimes several times) it and the power is back. This happens on a completely random basis and stops me pulling out in traffic due to the worry I will not get away as fast as expected. Ideas?
Hi Simon,
This could be the turbo boost actuator or the turbo itself.
If there is black smoke then it could be a split in the intercooler pipe or the 90 degree pipe which goes into the EGR valve – if the split is very small you may not get the smoke.
It would be worth putting it on diagnostics to see if there are any error codes present.

Hi Sue,
I have just rehomed a 2003 TD4 Freelander and I love it! I’m a little confused at the service history as it is marked in the book (as it is printed) as A, B and C so 3 yearly services. So I am having trouble trying to understand what ya been done and when.
I know that your advice above states to do A and B services but the book I have says A B and C however I can’t find I what might the C service entail!
Many ideas?
Hi John,
There is no C service on the Freelander 1 service schedule, so if somebody has ticked this then unfortunately we do not know what it would have entailed. The Freelander just alternates between the A and the B with some additional work at various other intervals, which should be highlighted in the comments section when carried out.

Hi Sue,
Please let me know the advantages of replacing air filter of a 2004 freelander 1 td4 with K&N air filter and also how to replace EGG valve and fit a blank.
How much is K&N filter and sending it to Kenya?
Hi Solomon. I would like to have a review from you about your freelander. I am I Kenya and I am looking to buy one. you can reach me via the email or phone 0710981830
Dear Sir!
I have td4 2002 , BMV M47. When i drive into the first gear, the engine accelerates and slow down and vice versa without pulling down the pedal.
Please , could you give an explanation why it happens?
Dear Cety,
The things to check are:
– the throttle pedal sensor;
– the fuel rail pressure wiring loom (there is an updated wiring loom which is worth having even if it is not causing the problem this time);
– the fuel rail pressure sensor.

I understand that the service intervals for a 2006 freelander 1 td4 auto is 20,000 kilometers. Please let me know why land rover dealers here in Kenya, RMA Kenya, service the freelander after 6500 kilometers and not the recommended 20,000 kilometers. If I use genuine parts and oil can I have a service interval of 20,000 kilometers? let me know what to do to get this service interval.I do not wade in waters and only do light offroad driving.
Hi Solomon,
Yes, the standard service interval for the Freelander 1 is 20,000km. Unfortunately I do not know why Land Rover Kenya recommend a service interval of 6,500km, however it could be that they consider the environment to be extreme conditions which warrant such a reduction in the service interval. How often you service your Freelander is entirely up to you, the service interval is Land Rover’s recommendation and is only a requirement when claiming under warranty.

Hi Sue,
How do I clean the BMW crank case breather filter and how often? Please let me know how much it costs and how long it will take to reach Kenya.
Hi Solomon,
You clean the BMW crankcase breather filter with and cleaning solvent or degreaser once a year with the annual service.
The filter is £32.53 plus £30 shipping to Kenya by courier. The shipping time is quoted as 4+ days (a 2+ day courier is £60).

Hi Sue
Is there a difference between crankcase breather filter and air filter.
Regards
Hi Audious,
Yes, there is. The air filter and crankcase breather filter are two completely different things. The crankcase breather filter is at the rear of the engine.

Is there a smell associated with the VCU failing??
I have a weird smell coming when i drive around, does not smell like oil or fuel, could describe it like a burning silicone, But my VCU does not get hot.
170000km FL1 06, done the marker test and it is not seized.
Does it really need it done?
Seb
Hi Seb,
There is no smell associated with the VCU, it is a sealed unit and will not emit any smell or external signs or wear.
The smell you are experiencing could come from burnt grease from the CV joint on the prop shaft, or it could come from the IRD / Transfer Box oil – this smells foul, a bit like rotten eggs.
If either the CV joint or the IRD are showing signs of damage it is highly likely it has been caused by the VCU being beyond its useable life. The VCU shows a gradual deterioration in the viscous oil generally after about 70,000 miles and starts to strain the components along the drivetrain. Often you will find small parts of the drivetrain going first, the CV joint on the prop shaft, the VCU bearings, the rear differential bearings. If these are replaced and the VCU is not changed it will continue to strain the weakest link on the drivetrain and generally will ultimately destroy the IRD.
The best way to tell if the VCU is straining the drivetrain is to drive on full lock, in first or reverse, and if it feels as if it is holding back on you, a little like the brakes are on, then the VCU is already causing a strain on the drivetrain and needs replacing as soon as possible – in fact we would strongly recommend dropping the prop shaft in this situation to avoid any further damage to the drivetrain.

Sue

Besides the other items which need replacing at fixed intervals, what should be serviced / changed during the standard A and B services ?
Whats the size / specification for the BMW cranckcase breather filter that can be used in the 2005 freelander 1 td4 auto ?
Hi solomon,
On the Freelander 1 TD4 an A service involves changing the oil filter, pollen filter, turbo boost filter, sump plug washer and crankcase breather filter. The B service includes the air filter and the fob battery.
We do not have size and specifications for the crankcase breather filter, you can either use the Land Rover breather filter which is replaced at every service or you can fit the BMW filter which just needs cleaning rather than replacing. The specification does not change, it is the same for all years for the Freelander 1 TD4.

Sue

Hi Sue
I am new to Freelander ownership and have just come across your very informative website. A great pity that you are so far from me – I live in Gloucestershire!
I have just purchased a 2004 TD4 Sport (manual gearbox) & have been surfing to get as much info as pos. There seems to be quite a range of views regarding tyre pressures and as the sport comes with 18″ wheels this adds another variation to the mix. Could you advise on correct pressures for this model on normal road use please?
Many thanks
Graham
Hi Graham,
Congratulations on your purchase, I’m sure you are going to love it.
Unfortunately even Land Rover cannot decide what the tyre pressures should be. Initially it was recommended they should be 32 psi, it was then changed to 26 psi, but this caused some issues and the recommendation was increased again. The recommendation is for 29 to 30 psi. More important than the tyre pressure, however, is the fact that all tyres are at the same pressure as a difference in the rolling radius of the wheels will have a detrimental effect on the drivetrain.
All the best,
Sue

What should I look out for if buying a used 2.0 Td4 automatic Freelander, 132,500 miles ?
Hi Dawn,
The main things to check with the TD4 Freelander are:
1. Has the viscous coupling unit (VCU) been changed? This should be changed around 70,000 miles to avoid damage to the rest of the drive train. Because it is not on a service schedule many people do not get it changed. At 132,500 miles, even if it was changed around 70,000 miles it will be coming up to requiring another change. Try driving the Freelander on full lock in forward and reverse gear to see if it feels as though it is holding back on you, a little like the brakes are on. If it does then you know you need to change it soon, so budget this in to the price (a reconditioned VCU with GKN bearings and fitting is £520).
2. Has the crank case breather filter been changed at the last service? If the service record does not specify which filters were changed and it was serviced by a non-specialist garage, there is a chance it was missed (some non-specialist garages do not realise the filter is there). To be on the safe side we would recommend getting this changed as soon as possible (circa £80) as this is the main reason we see the engines for reconditioning, the breather filter gets blocked and suffocates the engine.
Other than the above points just make sure it drives well with no funny clunking or vibration. They are fantastic vehicles, we’re sure you will love it.
All the best,
Sue

Please help!! My 05 plate 2.0 TD4 Diesel sometimes loses power on pulling away, this is a pain at roundabouts!! I’ve been told it sounds like the mass air flow sensor, would you agree?
Many thanks
MG
Hi MG,
It does sound as though it could be the MAF sensor. Try unplugging the MAF sensor and seeing if this cures the problem. If it does then you know that is the part you need to replace.

Good morning, Sue [Although it doesn’t feel like it]
Help or sympathy.
Instruments are having a party: Rev counter indicating about double engine speed; speedometer over-reading by c80% [eg 80mph at 50] odometer has leapt by a similar faction. From 100K to 174K The vehicle is a 2002 TD4 manual.
Is this going to ge as expensive as it feels? Is there a simple fix ie would a new instrument cluster do the job?
Any advice – even scorn – would be appreciated.
Kind regards,
Patrick Coulter.
Hi Patrick,
This does sound rather erratic! I wouldn’t mind going to a party that revs me up like that, it’s the ageing from 100 to 174 that would worry me!
We are not really sure what could have caused this but the simplest (and probably cheapest) option would be, as you say, to get another instrument cluster from the vehicle dismantlers, and fingers crossed this should stop the party! Do let us know if it works.
All the best,
Sue

Dear Sirs,
Thank you for your site and for beeing so clear!
But one doubt remains (Freelander Service Schedule diesel TD4 2000):
when you tell that the unit viscous coupling must me replaced about 70 000,00 miles, you mean only distancies or we also must take care of the age?
That’s to say:
Only 70 000,00 miles
or
70 000,00 miles or … months.
As I’ve been clear?
Thank you,
Fernando
Hi Fernando,
That is a very good question. Land Rover themselves do not give any advice on changing the viscous coupling unit, it is not on a service schedule and in fact there is no mention of it needing changing at regular intervals. We go by what we see – and we see a lot of these. Although age, the type of driving and particularly the condition of the tyres all have an effect on the viscous coupling unit life the main indicator we have found is the mileage. At around 70,000 miles they tend to become tight. The best test is to drive your Freelander on full lock in forward or reverse gear (generally more evident in reverse) and if it feels as if it is holding back on you, a little like the brakes are on, then it is time to get it changed. The biggest problem with this is that the holding back will gradually get worse, and because it is a gradual progression you can sometimes not notice how bad it has become.
One of the most important things in prolonging the life of your viscous coupling unit is having good, even tyres. Always change all four at the same time and test regularly that the viscous coupling is not being wound up due to uneven or mismatched tyres. To do this you need to take the Freelander for a few miles drive, then touch the viscous coupling unit (be careful, it could be hot). If the viscous coupling is too hot to hold your hand comfortably on it then you have a problem with your tyres being of different rolling radiuses, and you need to change them as soon as possible otherwise the viscous coupling will seize and cause damage to other elements along your drive train.
So the answer to your question is that generally it is a case of mileage rather than age, however it is possible for the viscous coupling to give problems before this mileage and hence it is worth keeping an eye out for any signs of it wearing prematurely.
I hope this helps.
All the best,
Sue
