  • I contacted Sue and Nobert after I noticed an oil leak from the area around where the nearside rear driveshaft enters the differential on my 2011 Freelander 2.  Approximately 12 months before, the rear differential had been repaired under warranty by the supplying dealer, a so called, ‘Land Rover Specialist’.  Nobert quickly diagnosed that, not only was the nearside driveshaft broken, but the supplying dealer had cross threaded a bolt and the differential had been replaced misaligned. He had the presence of mind to take photographs and video footage of the position of the differential before it was removed. Freelander Specialist supplied and fitted a reconditioned differential and supported me with expert advice and reports while I pursued a claim against the supplying dealer. Freelander Specialist have recently fitted a reconditioned power transfer unit and carried out a service. My Freelander’s performance has been transformed! It now accelerates more smoothly and provides better MPG and performance than at any other time in the three years that I’ve owned it. I cannot praise Sue, Nobert and the staff at Freelander Specialist highly enough. If you want the job doing properly, by experts at a fair price, then visit Freelander Specialist. “My 2003 1.8 Freelander  needed a top up of cooling fluid more often then it should have. Land Rover conducted pressure tests on two occasions and I was informed there was no leak. Took vehicle to Freelander specialist 80 miles away who immediately noted that the expansion bottle had cracks. I had a new head gasket to be on the safe side and a few seals replaced (inlet manifold leak), also a new expansion chamber. Replacement of IRD, VCU, Rear Diff and other work all because we were given incorrect advice initially for what turned out to be a wheel bearing which led us to replace all the above parts last year (recon parts), however it turns out that we were supplied some ‘iffy’ parts which actually caused a problem that was never there before! The Problem
I have a 2001 V6 Freelander. I picked up for a good price, low mileage, and it’s ES spec. It has not cost me much over the past couple years and been reliable.
However, on New Years Day (2012) one of the coolant pipes burst. The car ended up at my local Land Rover garage (who are excellent), but it turned out that after the pipe repair a system check found exhaust gases in the coolant.
Yes, worst nightmare:  it’s a tragedy when your best scenario is the cylinder head gasket has gone!
A simple HG replacement would cost me ~£2K at the Land Rover garage (not even with head skimming included). Could be worse e.g. a porous cylinder head etc… With a new head at £2K (each)… Or a new engine at £5K. It was getting disastrous !!!
So I was thinking about just trading-in , and I even test drove a few cars. But weighing up the ‘new car’ costs vs. sticking with my high-spec Freelander was not an easy decision… So I googled ‘re-conditioned engine’ and found the Freelander Specialist. Not only was I delighted with the pricing for a re-conditioned engine, but they were quite local to me.
The Brief
So getting in touch with Sue and Norbert, I provided them with the info and a brief which ranged from:
Simple HG replacement,
Deluxe HG replacement
to full Reconditioned Engine.
So quite a range of spend approved in principle.
The Solution
After Norbert investigation it was determined that a standard HG replacement plus some additional items would be required (timing belt kit, water pump etc), thus taking the spend somewhere between the Standard and Deluxe HG replacement level.
The Conclusion
Sue and Norbert extremely nice people to deal with.
They have demonstrated a high degree of competence coupled with a very honest and no-nonsense approach. They provide solutions in the most cost effective manner for their customers…  Quite rare in this day and age.
I am totally satisfied that I have found a reputable company and will continue to use the Freelander Specialist for my Landy needs from now on. Thanks !!”

After many garages including Landrover dealerships told me to patch it up and sell ASAP, I was over the moon to find someone who would not only recondition the engine but give it a decent warranty. The courteous service by yourselves and the collection driver ( Steve I think ) showed the pride and passion you all have and was a breath of fresh air. My beloved Freelander was starting to not perform as well as it used to. After hearing lots of knocks and rattles, and a horrible clunking sounds, I took it to a local dealer, who quoted a horrific price, and we really didn’t know what to do….
I remember before purchasing my 2003 TD4 Diesel,I’d come across freelanderspecialist.com and was amazed from the Q&A’s, that every single question was given a response, and the information that was given, was remarkable! Hundreds of people had written their questions, and every single one had been answered, in a detailed informative way, so with this in mind, I decided to give Sue a call.

I was very upset that evening, as had been quoted an awful price, and didn’t know what to do! Within minutes Sue had given a basic diagnosis on the symptoms I had described on the phone, and immediately put my mind at ease. Sue was kind and extremely friendly ( Not to mention that I had called quite late in the evening ), Sue still took my call, and had a chat with me for a good 20 minutes, and said that she would do all she could for me.

The car was booked in, and I made my way up to Norfolk. What followed, was customers service which I honestly have never received before in my life. Sue greeted me on the drive with a huge smile, instantly putting my mind at ease, and within minutes, not only did I know that she was there to help, but she cared.

I explained all the issues, and Sue said that she and her team would take care of it. I asked where the local shops were whilst the work was being done, and she was extremely kind to give me another Land Rover whilst the work was being done so I could go off and explore the local surroundings ( there is a wonderfully strange market on a Monday in the village – highly recommend that too! )

Sue text me with an update whilst the work was being done, before letting me know the Land Rover was ready. When I arrived back, I met Norbert – who was one of the most delightful people I have ever met. He took the time to go over the work that had been done to the vehicle, and also some other bits and pieces to keep an eye out for so that I could plan well in advance, and keep my beautiful Freelander in check!

Cars can be a huge worry, and they were and always have been, up until I met Sue and Norbert. I will NEVER go anywhere else now for brakes, tyres, or anything else, as I know they will look after me.

I didn’t think people like Sue or Norbert existed anymore, people that would take the time to explain. Every moment they spent talking to me, showed that they cared.

If you are looking for reasons to go to Sue and Norbert, then I would use this one to go and see them. I am more than happy for anyone to contact me and speak to me, and I will tell you the same.

“Freelander 2nd visit ( 22.07.2014 )

Well I thought I would write another review for Freelander Specialist, as I was up in Norfolk again on Tuesday to see Sue and Nobert, to get a couple more things done on my Freelander.

There was a terrible knocking noise which was coming from the front, and within no time, Sue and Nobert had detected it, and fixed it. The problem was quickly diagnosed and in the space of a day, fixed, and no more horrible knocking noises! ( I could not be happier )

I had the EGR blanked, and new hoses, and this has made such a difference to the MPG. I thought the MPG was great after Sue and Nobert fitted the RonBox but now, after the other work, it’s fuel consumption is terrific!

Another visit to Norfolk was well worth it!
The customer service was second to none.
The friendliness of them both you could not ask for better, and as i’ve told them –

”I consider them both to be extended family with how well they’ve looked, and continue to look after me, and my Freelander”.

Myself my wife and my 3 children travelled up early morning we were welcomed by lovely sue who was so kind and friendly she offered us all a drink and let us chill out in her living room where she gave us so much advice. we were offered a loan car whilst our car had work done to it which was going to take most of the day we really appreciate nobert carrying out the work in one day as other companies were telling us it was going to take at least 5 days.

we had a lovely time with the kids at a park nearby when we came back sue offered us another drink and told us to have a rest and watch tv in her living room it was really nice of her as the kids were worn out and slept until the car was ready.

“I contacted Sue and Nobert after I noticed an oil leak from the area around where the nearside rear driveshaft enters the differential on my 2011 Freelander 2.  Approximately 12 months before, the rear differential had been repaired under warranty by the supplying dealer, a so called, ‘Land Rover Specialist’.  Nobert quickly diagnosed that, not only was the nearside driveshaft broken, but the supplying dealer had cross threaded a bolt and the differential had been replaced misaligned. He had the presence of mind to take photographs and video footage of the position of the differential before it was removed. Freelander Specialist supplied and fitted a reconditioned differential and supported me with expert advice and reports while I pursued a claim against the supplying dealer.

Freelander Specialist have recently fitted a reconditioned power transfer unit and carried out a service.

My Freelander’s performance has been transformed! It now accelerates more smoothly and provides better MPG and performance than at any other time in the three years that I’ve owned it.

I cannot praise Sue, Nobert and the staff at Freelander Specialist highly enough. If you want the job doing properly, by experts at a fair price, then visit Freelander Specialist. I wouldn’t have my Freelander serviced or repaired anywhere else and cannot recommend them highly enough.

May I say that I am delighted to get the MG back and further to speaking to Norbert am confident that the work undertaken has been done comprehensively and to a high standard. The drive back from Thetford to home was very smooth, no knocking noises, although engine speed was kept below 3000 rpm. The transmission was very smooth, the new clutch being of far superior quality than whatever Mr Clutch fitted 90,000 miles ago. The gear change is slick and precise. The engine was found to be responsive, even at low speed in 5th gear, the good low down torque that has always made the MG a pleasure and ease to drive around town. I have become lazy after driving an auto consistently for the past 6 months.

Now that I know of a trustworthy, honest and knowledgeable KV6 specialist, should I have any issues that I am unable to resolve, or simply would like a second opinion, I wold definitely contact yourselves.

After reading the reviews on your website i knew i had to use your services, and i wasn’t wrong, i know at the start Nobert thought it was the timing chain which after telling the cost of repair cost persuaded the car was to be took to the scrap heap, but i was glad i had the chance to tell you exactly what the symptoms were which i should have done as soon as i got the car to your place. i could see Noberts brain ticking over whilst i was talking and when he went out to try something under the bonnet and take the car for a test drive i was so amazed to here Nobert say he has found the problem. “I have undertaken most servicing and repairs on our cars (except when under warranty) for over 50 years due to a mistrust with garage services, with one or two exceptions, gained in my early years of motoring. However, the “Reduced Engine Performance” warning had me, and a LR franchise garage which had the car for 9 days trying to diagnose the cause, foxed. Their, and the warranty company’s, only suggestion was to strip the turbo out (at an estimated cost to me of £800) to see if that might be the cause. Then the cost of putting it all back if it were not! I sadly didn’t proceed, the likely expenditure of around £1,500 with possibly no solution did not appeal.
Over the course of a year I went through every possible cause and found no problem other than having to constantly reset the DTC and limp home in the interim.
At this point I decided to bite the bullet and replace the turbo but needed to have some reassurance that this was the problem. I particularly decided that, having recently undertaken replacement of the cambelt and some wheel bearings, that I wanted the works undertaken by a garage… but who?
Web research found freelanderspecialist.com and reading the enquiries and responses from Sue, I was impressed, so I sent my own enquiry, including a fairly detailed resume of history to Sue.
Wow! I was amazed by the quick and positive response I received, with Sue detailing specifics about the turbo and its components together with an indication of what part was frequently known to have failed and be the likely cause.
An estimate (very reasonable), car in for turbo replacement, a regular update on progress and other related identified defects, which it was agreed should be rectified, and I have a car which is running smoothly, probably better than ever… and no warnings on dash.
On top of that Sue and Norbert have advised me on other Freelander matters which are really helpful.

Sue and Norbert two of the nicest people you could meet. My Volvo XC-90 (2010) for the last 2 years had that dreaded whining noise so I decided to do something about it, did my research and found Sue and Norbert, rang Sue arranged a day, did the four hour drive to their premises.
Arrived just before 9 in the morning, friendly greeting and professional.
Had my Son with me who has friends in Norwich, Sue offered us the use of a car, I enquired about the train as decided that let the train take the strain, Norbert then gave us a lift to the station 10 minutes away, the train takes no time at all, and having never been to Norwich I have to say it is a beautiful city and well worth the visit. Anyhoo Sue said to call about 3 o’clock as car would be done, rang Sue who told me car ready to go at 4, caught the 3.30 train arrived at Brandon 4.06, and Norbert there waiting with the car ( The wife usually arrives 15 minutes late when she picks me up from stations LOL). Back to the office to fix up, car sounded great on the way back no more whining, had a great chat ( They know their stuff) and met Bert (The St Bernard), who like Nobert and Sue very friendly ( I think we took half his coat in the car with us) and then of we went, car was brilliant on the drive back and felt very confident a job well done, no more worries for me. So in summary any Volvo owners out there contact Sue they provide a great service and at a fantastic price and they are a pleasure to deal with. It was well worth the distance travelled and if I ever have to use their services again, I will stay the night in Norwich. Just to say thanks for really looking after my concerns on my FR2. Having travelled to you you undertook a 12 year service after we had earlier discussed on the phone that the 10 year service had not been carried out by previous owners, neither had a cambelt service, so we agreed that everything would be done. At my request you also investigated the noise from the diff’ and realised that it would need a recon’ which you carried out along with the Haldex service. The inlet manifold was also replaced due to my experience on an earlier FR2 when one snapped and put the paddles into the cylinders.
Following 2 nights and a very wet day in lovely Hunstanton we collected the car on Saturday morning and listened carefully to your report, which was very thorough and easily understood.
Within minutes of leaving Cindy said that it felt like a different car; it was smooth and quiet and felt more ‘solid’. It’s been 2 weeks since the work was completed and I’m still pleasantly surprised each time I climb into it every morning.
The plastic, almost virtual world of main dealers and their ‘technicians’ seems to be taking over but it is really wonderful and heart-warming to find a business such as yours which not only demonstrates that customer service is paramount but that the mechanical and technical skills are still proudly maintained and practiced and at a fair price.

Sue, Nobert and their team are extremely kind and nice people.
What I can tell is that they do know their job. I went to FreelanderSpecialist to get my Volvo XC70 fixed (known issue with the noisy rear diff, which is the same part as on the Freelander).
They offer a 1-day service for disassemble/recondition/reassemble the rear differential, which is very attractive since it’s a lot of work. Other companies often require sending the part, and you have to wait for it to return before reassembling locally, which can lead to unwanted delays and complications. This sounded great because I needed my car repaired for this summer hollydays, and though I live in France, I considered the trip to UK by ferry from brittany was worth.
Presales communication with Sue was excellent, fast, accurate and pleasant.
About the service : not only they kept their promise, but they managed to get the job done on half a day, which is positively pure magic 🙂 (again, it’s a lot of work).

“I booked my Freelander 2 in with these guys having found them through google search. I have no connection with them whatsoever and it is not usually my thing to write a review, however no one deserves a good review more than these guys. The whole thing from start to finish was very easy and their customer service is 2nd to none. My FL2 was having some running problems i called and the car was booked in for the following week, but then i found i had some free time so i called one morning and i was given an appointment the same day. I arrived late morning and i was greeted by the team and within no time at all Sue was making the coffee and Norbert was already checking the car over, after he done the diagnostics we were of up the road for a test and for a re gen, once this was done we returned to the depot and Norbert took the car into the workshop to work his magic. I waited in the reception and more coffee was quickly provided to me in the very pleasant surroundings with plenty of Land Rover magazines to read through. Then about 90 minutes later Norbert returned and the work / magic was complete.
I have owned my car for 2 years and it has always been a pleasure to drive and also very smooth, however after Norbert got his hands on it , its even better and smoother than ever. I can only say if anyone else who reads this has a problem with their car rest assured you are in very safe hands with Norbert and the team at Freelander Specialist”

                                   Thank-you so very much for the great service you all gave to repair our Freelander . Amazing how efficiently the repairs were carried out.
 I cannot believe the difference in how quiet the FL is. Engine quiet, drive train and auto box as smooth as silk. Feels like a new car and my handbrake now work , which  it never did very well. Also thanks for the loan car 96k and smooth as butter.
  If I had not read the article from your customer Steve about tyres, I would have been looking at more expense later and still be ignorant about the damage a lack of knowledge with these cars can do with incorrect tyres.
  The cost isn’t to be sniffed at but considering the cost of replacing a rear differential gearbox and maybe the auto box it would equate to a vast sum of money. I don’t grudge a penny of this expense as the car is now so profoundly better more than I expected. The freelander is a very good vehicle we have owned it for 7 years with this being the only repairs we have had to date. Tyres,  Cambelt and brakes etc are service items which have always been carried as per specifications. As with our yearly servicing .
   My advice to anyone thinking of buying a freelander 2 they are great cars provided they have had the correct servicing to the drive train and gearbox. The person who will in future be spannering my FL is Nobert. A true professional and specialist. Also Sue who knows enough about fLs to explain the intricacies of a Haldex drive system to embarrass a seasoned mechanic. We cannot thank you all enough. Lastly not to forget the Lady who made me a nice cuppa thankyou, I didn’t get your name but I will when we call again.

A huge “thank you” to Sue, Nobert, and the Team! Booked my Freelander 2 in for a reconditioned front diff due to the very loud humming and howling. Not only were they able to change that in a day, but they identified a whole host of other issues and problems waiting to spring out and catch me off guard; it was fantastic how they went above and beyond with fixing all these extra issues to ensure my Land Rover was back up to scratch. The Freelander runs beautifully now, and my l/km has dropped significantly. When I went to pick the car up, Sue gave me loads of great advice on how to keep it in the best possible state, starting with new tyres (old ones had worn unevenly because of the diff) and a wheel alignment; I went straight over to Kwikfit for a brand new set and an alignment. The only trouble with my fully fixed Freelander now, is my toddler doesn’t fall asleep as easily on drives because it’s so quiet and smooth!Will definately make the long trip back for any more issues, can’t recommend this wonderful business enough!”

A quick note to express my sincere thanks for your kind help and assistance, in aiding my poorly Freelander 2 back on to the road.

Although a 2011 plate, the car has been well looked and was, and remains, in great cosmetic condition, the dread felt when at first advised of the failing Haldex and Front Differential units was compounded, when the costs for new replacement parts (even if available from JLR) were detailed, it made no sense to undertake the repairs.

Though still a substantial cost, the costs for the high quality reconditioned and re-engineered parts from Freelander Specialist, were several thousand pounds less expensive than new parts, making the required repairs viable.

You patient telephone manner and help provided the reassurance that making the ‘meaty’ investment of purchasing the parts and having them fitted, was indeed the right thing to do. The decision to buy from Freelander Specialist was further confirmed when the parts arrived on the promised dates, carefully and securely packaged. Delivering the parts to the local independent Land Rover specialist, carrying out the repairs, duly elicited a nod and grunt of approval in respect of the parts high quality finish…the car now runs as well as it did 10 years ago. The arrangements for the uplift and return, to Freelander Specialist, of ‘broken’ parts from my car was a straightforward as delivery.

Please accept my sincere thanks for enabling my car to get back on the road.
