Is your Freelander 1 tailgate window not operating properly? They have been known to randomly open before, or not close properly! Before heading to the garage try recalibrating it.
Here is the recalibration procedure:
1. Disarm the alarm system.
2. Disconnect your Freelander battery.
3. Wait for 5 seconds.
4. Reconnect your battery.
5. The tailgate window will automatically go down completely.
6. Put your key in the ignition and turn to the ‘ignition’ position.
7. Using the tailgate window control on the dashboard, press and hold until the tailgate window is fully up.
8. If you get a warning buzzer then the calibration has failed, otherwise that’s it, your tailgate window is recalibrated.
If the standard recalibration of your Freelander 1 tailgate window does not work then check out the procedure in this bulletin:
TAIL DOOR GLASS OPENS AUTOMATICALLY IMMEDIATELY AFTER CLOSING
Bulletin Number – 0104
Issue – 1
Date – 28.08.2002
Model – Freelander
Affected Range – All derivatives
Re-Issue Information
Problem
TAIL DOOR GLASS OPENS AUTOMATICALLY IMMEDIATELY AFTER CLOSING
Cause
Tail door glass calibration incorrectly set within the Central Control Unit (CCU).
Action
Where a complaint of the above is confirmed, follow the calibration procedure below to reset the tail door glass.
Calibration procedure
1. Disconnect the battery earth lead. Refer to Workshop Manual, General Information, Electrical Precautions, Battery disconnection.
NOTE: Allow ten seconds to elapse between disconnection and connection to erase the stored calibration value.
2. Connect the battery earth lead.
NOTE: The tail door glass will drop approximately 2 seconds after the battery has been connected.
3. Start engine.
4. Ensure that all electrical loads, i.e. lights, heater etc. are turned off.
5. Increase the engine speed to 1500 rev/min for 10 seconds, after 10 seconds and whilst maintaining 1500 rev/min, carry out the following operations:
Close the tail door glass to calibrate the CCU.
Fully open the tail door glass.
Fully close the tail door glass.
If the tail door glass remains closed the calibration procedure is complete, refer to step 6.
If the tail door glass opens then repeat the calibration procedure from step 1.
6. Allow engine to idle then switch off engine.
Hi Sue – it’s another tailgate issue! and so I do apologise.
I haven’t been able to find the exact same problem elsewhere, and as your patience seems to be infinite, I thought I’d ask your advice –
Mine is a 2002 TD4 Auto 3 door
The tailgate glass operates correctly for door opening/closing but it will not go up or down using the interior switch / key fob or tailgate key.
I’ve exposed all wiring i.e. all carpets / trims / panels are removed so I can access everything involved. It’ was too cold to continue today but I can say that there is no evidence of broken cables or obstructions!
Could you give me a check list of things to look out for – I was going to start with the obvious ~ Fuses and recalibration procedures but I don’t want to be ‘out there’ for any longer than is necessary. brrrrrr!
P.S> what part of the country are you based?
Many thanks
Max
Hi Sue – All fixed!
It was the rear windscreen fuse – happy days as I was dreading doing the regulator – that seems to be to most common fix but I wasn’t convinced that was the problem in my case.
I’ve one more question re the tailgate door rubber seal – in the top left hand corner (directly above the door handle) where the glass is rounded off – my rubber has a split in it (horizontally)about 65/70 mm long – is this a feature to allow drainage from the roof or is it just a split through age/wear & tear?
Finally (for now) I’d love to know where your garage is – I suspect it’s hundreds of miles away as that’s sod’s law!
and thank you for such a helpful & cheerful website
With best regards Max
Hi Max,
My apologies for being too late to the party – great to hear it is all fixed now!
Yes, the split is supposed to be there on the tailgate door seal so no need to worry.
We are located in Norfolk, mid way between Cambridge and Norwich (IP26 4RH).
All the best,
Sue

Hello! I hope that someone can help me 🙂
I just purchased a 2000 Freelander here in Portugal and am having an issue with the rear door.
When I close it it sometimes wont be recognized as closed. There is the door open symbol on the dashboard, this means that the window stays partly down and the rear wiper and cleaner buttons do not work.
Slamming it sometimes works to solve this, so I assume its some sort of contact? Any advise as to what I should look at / change would be much appreciated.
Thank you and greetings from Portugal!
Kai
Hi Kai,
My apologies for the delay in responding. You will need to change the latch and actuator for the tailgate door – it comes as a package with both as part number FQR000010 (£168.72+VAT). It is difficult to determine whether the latch is faulty or the actuator and it is much cheaper to buy the two together, so this would make sure the problem was fixed.
All the best,
Sue
Good day guys,
Firstly, I would like to thank you guys for such an amazing website, it really helps me here in Zimbabwe. I had a 2002 tci Freelander 1 (3 door model). The engine knocked, so I was advised to change to a k-series engine model 1.8l. so after the engine overhaul, the electrics were also then changed from engine compartment right to the rear window to suit the now 1.8L k-series engine.
The car performs very well, just dont have hdc. however, the issue I am having, has to do with the tailgate.
here is the senario;
i) the tailgate window does not open
thus, perform calibration by following procedure below:
The above procedure works and the window working properly until I switch off the engine again, then in that instance when the button is pressed to open the tailgate, there are no beeps and it does not open, I repeat the calibration procedure and it works again.
what could be the issue here?
Hi Simbarashe,
We are very pleased to hear you have found our site helpful.
When it is working put the window all the way down using the switch; use the key on the tailgate handle , turning it clockwise, to lift the window up (with the door closed) and see if it will retain the memory.
All the best,
Sue
Sue,
I have a rear window issue that seems to be slightly different from those described in the comments so far. A few days ago my son was unloading things from the back of his Freelander (engine off) when the rear window spontaneously rolled all the way down. It rolled with the motor, it did not just break loose and drop. Since then we can’t get it to move.
We’ve tried both calibration techniques but they didn’t work. On each third try rolling the window up or down, we get three beeps. We can hear the relay, but the motor does not seem to run. It might be a motor, but the motor rolled it down into its current position, which causes me to think it’s something else. Any suggestions?
Hi Rod,
Try using the key in the tailgate door handle to lift the window up – does this work? If it does it could be an issue with the switch; but if it doesn’t then it is more likely to be the motor.
All the best,
Sue
0780 9575 421
Thank you for the advice. We can’t roll the window up with any switch or key. We replaced the motor, but it is the same, although interesting the new motor also rolled the window down, but not up. We also just checked the relays. They both seem good, but only the relay for rolling down clicks. When we swapped the relay positions, the formerly up relay worked when plugged into the down relay slot, but the other one did not. This tells me that it’s an electrical problem upstream of the relays. Do you have any further suggestions or experience?
Hi Rod,
It would be worth checking the switch. Sometimes the switch contacts can weld themselves together – if they have done this in the down position then you would not be able to lift the window up.
All the best,
Sue
Yeah I checked that too and replaced the but it did not change things. Do you think we have a computer problem, or am I overlooking something obvious?
Hi Rod,
It is much more likely to be a regulator issue than a computer issue, I don’t think we have ever had a window issue that was caused by a computer fault.
All the best,
Sue
Hi Rod,
How did you fix the problem?
Erik
Good afternoon Sue, from reading this thread you seem to be my best hope.
I have 2x FL1 TD4:
3 door 05 – for spares – rear window working well, no open door light on dash, no beeping horn when locked.
4 door 06 – new daily.
on buying the 4 door, the rear window was closed enough to keep it dry but also clear the upper trim, door open light on dash and beeped on locking. No response from tailgate switch, wiper, demister or PDC it would seem.
Stripped it down and nothing obvious bar glass shards in the boot area, on further inspection i discovered the tailgate switch was unplugged.
plugged the switch in and the window dropped – never to go up again regardless of calibration etc – no matter what i did i could not get it to go back up.
Solution – take the 3 door tailgate and fit to the 5 door.
This worked well with the following issues:
Door open light still on (this was not on 3 door)
Wiper/Demister still no response
Still beeps on locking
During calibration of the window, it gets about 80% up then returns to the bottom – for now ive had to physically encourage it to stay closed enough to keep the rain out.
From extensive reading of this thread id be inclined to say actuator (i actually thought this initially but couldnt see how to access it hence swapping the hole tailgate – im doubtful that is the issue though as the 3 door worked perfectly
is there maybe an ecu that isnt picking up the ‘door is closed’ signal? or could one of the side doors have a faulty actuator and maybe that is causing tailgate issues?
im really at a loss and dont know how to troubleshoot from here.
Chris
Hi Chris,
Yes, it sounds very much like the door is not registering as closed and hence you are not getting the functionality. If there was glass in the tailgate then it could be it has had a shunt and is not lining up properly, otherwise it is either the actuator or the latch itself, so we would suggest taking the whole latch and actuator set over from the 3 door to the 5 door.
All the best,
Sue

Hi Sue,
Really appreciate the quick reply.By way of an update ive just went out and sat the 5 door tailgate into the 3 door and plugged it in, using a screwdriver a fooled the latch into the closed position.
The open door light went out and the window went up – again this is on the parts car.
To me this says that both latches and actuators work on both tailgates but something deeper in the 5 door is not recognizing this.
Hopefully this makes sense – is the ecu behind the fuse box interchangeable? I could maybe try that.
Hi Chris,
Yes, the body control module is behind the fuse box and is interchangeable for testing purposes. Unfortunately the immobiliser is programmed in to the BCM.
All the best,
Sue
Hello Sue
Thanks for your great trouble shooting guide! With the info in your posts I managed to solve my rear window problem 🙂
The rear window did not work because wires were broken (rust) and the wire-drum in the actuator was damaged. I installed an Allmakes4x4 set and got the beeb error warning. After reading your posts I realized it was a communication error in the electronics which I solved by only installing the mechanical part of the new kit as follows:
1. Remove the pressed steel plate from the new actuator (need to slightly pull back the green connector).
2. Remove the 3 screws which hold the black plastic wire-drum assembly (and cable connections) on the aluminum body .
3. Carefully lift the black plastic wire-drum assembly and place it on the old motor. There is no need to undo wires!
4. Mount back the pressed steel plate.
I also modified the slider rails as I noticed that the aluminum window clamps moved too far down. On the bottom of the rails there is a small hole, I enlarged it slightly with a 4mm drill and inserted a short M4 bolt with 2 nuts on the top side. This way the window clamp / slider could move 8-10 mm less far down.
Now the window works perfectly again 🙂
Thanks again for making your great knowledge available to us “freelander enthusiasts”.
Kind regards,
Pieter

Sue,
Thanks so much for an amazing website! I’ve got a problem with my tailgate window which hasn’t been resolved by recalibration.
The window was fine prior to a battery issue, and now the new battery is in we’ve got the window up to almost to the top but not tucked inside. The door is recognised as shut as the interior light goes on when turned to ignition.
When I use the interior switch the window goes fully up then immediately drops to just below where it tucks in and beeps. When I use the key the window goes right up but then drops down to just before where it tucks in. Have you got any suggestions of what to look at next please?!
Thanks so much!
Hi Claire,
It sounds as though it needs re-alignment as it is not tucking in to the maximum position. You will need to take off the door panel and then you should be able to re-align the window from the bottom fasteners of the regulator.

Sue

Thanks so much for your help Sue, I really appreciate it! Will give it a try 🤞
It’s a pleasure Claire.

tried taken earth of battery ,still window won’t come down ,I get 4 beeps, can’t take window out can’t get at 4 nuts holding the glass in,can you help me please
Hi Sam,
Does the window operate when you press and hold the unlock button on the key fob?
You need to disconnect the +ve and -ve terminals of the battery rather than the earth.
The glass is held by two clamps on either side which have a 10mm bolt which need to be loosened. If you can get the tailgate door open and remove the seal for the glass, which is held by 8mm bolts on either end of the tailgate/glass, this will give better access to the 10mm bolts.
Are the wires of the window regulator broken?
All the best,
Sue

Hello everybody.
I would like to ask can a open window or unlocked door cause the freelander1 1998 model to not start.
Hello Nathan,
No, an open window or unlocked door should not cause your Freelander not to start.
When it is not starting what is happening? Do you have the lights on the dashboard? Does it try to crank or are you just getting a click?
If all the lights are coming on the dashboard but you are just getting a click when trying to start it then follow the wire from the battery to the starter motor, then feel around for a smaller wire which is connected to the starter motor. Wriggle this smaller wire (it has a spade connector on it, you are trying to get this to connect better) then try to start the Freelander. If it starts then you will need to replace the spade connector on that wire.

Hi Sue,
I have replaced the cables for the rear windscreen regulator – a fairly straight forward job.
However, when I try to calibrate the mechanism, the motor goes beyond the fully down position and pulls the cable from the glass carries/sliders. This is snapping the cable attachment point and has on at least on occasion ruined a new set of cables. I am currently on my 4th set of carriers/sliders and in need of some advice.
I am happy with the fully calibration procedure as set out above, but on each occasion the motor will travel up, travel down and when fully down you can hear the motor still running.
Any thoughts on what might be happening?
Thank you
Craig.
PS: Thank you for such an wonderful resource for LR FL owners,,,,,has been life saver!
Hi Craig,
Unfortunately we have had similar issues when trying to use just the cable kits, or, on the tailgate window, the aftermarket regulators; with no obvious reason why. Nowadays, on the tailgate window, we only use the genuine Land Rover regulator and never have any issues – I know they are really pricey but they do work!
Sorry we could not help further on this occasion.
All the best,
Sue

Thanks for the reply Sue.
Just to be sure that we have bottomed out here before I through more money at the problem – the regulator is OEM (original install as far as I can tell) and only he cables and carriers have been replaced.
Does that change the opinion?
Either way, thanks very much for your help – much appreciated!
Craig
Hi Craig,
It is difficult to say if this is definitely the issue but it is precisely because of having issues such as these with teh tailgate window that we will not fit just the cables or even the aftermarket regulators and only use genuine Land Rover regulators on the tailgate.
All the best,
Sue

Hi
Firstly, what an amazingly helpful and kind resource! Huge thanks for all the time and effort.
I’ve had a read through and whilst I’ve gathered some ideas I’m not 100% sure what to try and so thought I’d write first.
The vehicle (my friend’s) is a Freelander 1, 2000. He had some issues with the cables at the tailgate and so replaced the regulator. Prior to this everything was working fine. But since fitting the replacement (which included all the cabling and the motor) the following is happening:
– The window goes down normally as it should when the door is opened.
– But it doesn’t go up when the door is closed. It stays as it is (partially opened).
– When operated by the dashboard switch, the window does go up and down but only in small increments, not in continuous movements.
– Also when using the dashboard switch, 4 beeps are sounded.
– The window does close when turning the key clockwise in the backdoor keyhole.
– The rear wiper is not working
Hopefully that’s enough pieces to put together for a diagnosis! If another part is needed, would you be able to link to it please or specify?
Many thanks
Hi Max,
Thank you for your kind words regarding our website.
I assume you have tried both of the calibrations.
What make of window regulator did your friend use? We have known issues like this with some aftermarket / faulty regulators.
All the best,
Sue
Hi
You deserve the kind words 🙂
Yes, he said he has tried both of the calibration methods.
The regulator was an aftermarket one so perhaps that’s the problem? I’m not sure of the make but it has an SKU code of CVH101150. I’ve spoken to the supplier who said they’ve sold many of these and had no come back.
I’ve also seen the actuator mentioned a lot below. Could that be the issue or does some of the things I’ve listed rule that out? If it might be the issue, would it have been part of the motor/cable/regulator assembly he bought or is the actuator something different and separate?
When I mentioned actuator to the supplier he said he didn’t know what I meant by it.
If it is worth changing the actuator, what part exactly is needed please?
If any further tests or info is needed to help diagnose, please let me know and I’ll pass it on.
Thank you so much
Hi Max,
No, the actuator is not part of the regulator.
The fact the rear wiper is not working can be an indication of the actuator being an issue, not having the power to lift the window; however it could also be be because the window is not fully closed.
The actuator is ALR8702 and is £49.14 including VAT.
All the best,
Sue
0780 9575 421
Hi Sue
Thanks for explaining and for the part number needed. Very helpful.
If the issue is the use on a third party regulator, how would this manifest? Would the symptoms experienced/described above match what you’d expect to see with problems from a non-genuine regulator? I’ll see if I can find out exactly what make the one bought is.
As for the actuator… You mention “not having the power to lift the window”. The fact that the window DOES close when operated from the dashboard switch, and also when operated from with the key, does that change anything? Is the actuator involved in those instances, because if so why is it finding the power to close the window when operated like that?
“It could also be be because the window is not fully closed.” I’ll see if we can get the window fully close when I next see my friend and whether the wiper then works or not. Perhaps that will help diagnose!
Many thanks
Hi Max,
We have experienced these types of symptoms with some aftermarket regulators.
It is more of a communication issue between the actuator and the regulator, i.e. it is not registering the door is closed and hence not lifting the window, or the actuator may be registering the door is closed but the regulator is not registering this and hence not lifting the window that little bit.
All the best,
Sue
Thanks Sue. For the record, the regulator was manufactured by AllMakes 4×4. If or when we get to the bottom of all of this, I’ll report back to whether it was this that causing the problem.
Hi Max,
We have had issues with those ones before I’m afraid, so we no longer use them. We would really appreciate the feedback once it is sorted.
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sue.
I hope this reaches you.
I have been reading through all the comments but I am still unable to find the problem on my rear window on my 2000 freelander 1 3door 2l.
The window is slightly open as it should be when opening the rear door. When I turn the key to the right the window does go up and then comes back down again followed by a biep. The same when operating it from cabin.goes slightly up when I press up and then just goes down again with the biep.Bieps instantly when I press down button. However I have noticed when I lock the car and then turn the key to the right the window goes up and stays there.By by unlocking the car again it goes down.Have tried the calibration many times without any luck. Any ideas?
Thanks
Neil
Hi Neil,
My apologies for the delay in responding.
Have you tried disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes. When you reconnect it the window will drop to the bottom, then start the Freelander and raise the window using the switch in the cabin. If this does not work it could be the actuator or the microswitch on the door handle making the regulator think the door is still open.
All the best,
Sue

Hi, my dads freelancer 1 has had a replacement tailgate. The window went up once but dropped after putting it down to realine the glass it won’t got back up
Hi Nicola,
Can you hear the motor running when you try to put the window up? If you take the door panel off can you see any broken wires on the window regulator?
All the best,
Sue

Hi Sue thank for the reply. No no broken wires or anything it just won’t go up
Hi Nicola,
Have you tried using the key in the tailgate door, turning it clockwise, to see if window will go up. If it does then check the tailgate window switch in the cabin as it may have shorted.
All the best,
Sue

Hi, Sue
Regarding the actuator, when you pull the door handle and it operates is it supposed to hold and not release until you let go of the handle or does it open and automatically release after 1 -2 seconds?
Hi Adam,
No, it does not hold, it just opens and releases.
Did you use an aftermarket window regulator? Some of the after market regulators do not drop the window as they should.
Have you checked the alignment of the glass on the regulator holders?
All the best,
Sue
It’s not that then…..lol
Yes all genuine and lined up!
Thanks again for your time!
Hi Adam,
I must admit, without seeing it we are at a bit of a loss with this one. Generally it would be the alignment of the glass, the calibration, the actuator or the latch, if you are using a genuine Land Rover regulator. It is not likely to be the latch if the wiper and de-mister are working. If you have tried both the calibration techniques then it will not be that. If you are sure the glass is aligned properly it rules that out, and, as you say, the actuator appears to be working.
If you are any where near us (IP26 4RH) you are welcome to pop round and we will take a look for you, and see if we can shed any more light on it.
All the best,
Sue
0780 9575 421
Thank you, sadly I’m mostly in Devon at the moment, I will re check the alignment etc when I get a chance, it’s odd I had it on a bench today and it worked once and then stopped again……..lol
Hi Adam,
Was that the regulator or the actuator which worked once then stopped again?
All the best,
Sue
Hi, Sue.
On the bench still plugged to loom I pulled the tailgate release after removing and refitting the motor ( I moved the plastic bit with 3 lugs between the motor and regulator)
It kicked in and the glass clamps moved down the required amount I then activated the tailgate lock with a screwdriver and they went back to the top!
I then pulled the tailgate release again and heard the motor move again but the glass clamps didn’t move the second or subsequent times
Hi Adam,
It sounds like the actuator is faulty.
All the best,
Sue
OK thanks Sue, I will get a new one and let you know 😎
I think that is the only thing which is making sense given your symptoms Adam.
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sue, sadly no change, I’ve fitted a brand new genuine LR actuator, followed the calibration procedure just incase and I still have the same problem 🤨
Back to the drawing board for me!
Oh no Adam, that is disappointing. There must be something in the setup which has been missed as you seem to have changed everything!
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sue, all sorted, after reading through everything and more interweb research it turns out the genuine LR cable regulator I purchased was not genuine LR!
I have now purchased a genuine one and everything works fine😎
I have also raised a case for a refund with PayPal for my original purchase!
Thanks again for your help and patience.
Adam
Hi Adam,
Excellent, good to hear it is all sorted.
All the best,
Sue
Hi. I have a freelancer- back window was opened manually by someone who pushed the window down – at the time the cat battery was flat …. it’s a Loonnggg story …. anyhow I have replaced the battery and have tried to get the window up with the remote and inside control but its not working. Is it possible that there is a problem electronically or can it be broken inside because this idiot pushed the window down. Thanks for your help.
Hi Annette,
It could be that the cables have broken inside, it is worth, however, checking the fuse.
All the best,
Sue

Hello Sue. We have. Freelander 1 (2006). Recently we noticed the interior light stays on when driving, even when checking the two doors we used. Still on. When locking the car, it honks and will not lock and we have noticed that the boot window is open slightly even though we have not opened it or the door. We have tried opening the rear door and reclosing it, which appears to work, until the next time. Do you what could be wrong?
Hi Joanne,
This sounds like an issue with either the tailgate door actuator or the latch assembly. If the tailgate door is not registering as shut (even though it may be) then the internal light will remain on and when you come to lock the Freelander you will get the honks warning you a door is open.
All the best,
Sue
0780 9575 421
Hiya sue, I cannot find anything In the car manual about either! Does this mean we will have to get it professionally checked/repaired? Is this a big/expensive job?
Hi Joanne,
If you have somebody mechanically minded you could do it yourselves, otherwise it would be a case of taking it in to replace the latch / actuator – not a long job, about 30 minutes.
If you buy the latch and actuator together it is £143.86 including VAT. The actuator on its own is £49.14 including VAT, and the latch on its own is £108.48 including VAT. The difficulty is determining whether the issue is the actutor or the latch.
All the best,
Sue

Hi Sue, on our last chat you suggested the actuator may be at fault after replacing my tailgate regulator the window won’t drop on opening but does free up to push down, I have striped and greased the actuator and it can be seen and heard working but I still have the same problem?
Hi Adam,
If cleaning the actuator helped it work for a while but it has then stopped working again, unfortunately it is probably time to change the actuator.
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sue, cleaning the actuator made no difference, and it still works just fine, I just still have the problem
Hi Adam,
If you had the same problem initially, cleaned the actuator once and it worked again, then this indicates the actuator was having a problem. If it is not the actuator it is generally the window regulator (which you have changed) or the switch in the cabin (which you said is working). Hence, it seems most likely that the actuator was failing, the first clean brought it back to life for a while, but a subsequent clean has failed to bring it back again. If you are convinced it is not the actuator then it could be the latch if the window de-mister and wiper are also not working.
All the best,
Sue
Thanks Sue, I think I explained badly somewhere the actuator has always worked, I just serviced it while it was out.
Thanks anyway 😎
Hi Adam,
Does the tailgate windscreen wiper and de-mister work?
All the best,
Sue
Yes they do😎
The problem started after replacing the regulator after the cable snapped
My 2005 Freelander has a rear door / tail gate window problem.
Window will.not close, and rear door will not lock, so it opens itself while car is moving! Is it a technical problem with the door locking mechanism? How to resolve it pls?
No Land-rover mechanic where I live!
Thanks, Suzan, Symi, Greece
Hi Suzan,
This sounds like an issue with the tailgate latch. If you replace this it should sort out your problem.

Sue

Hi
We have a 2006 Landrover Freelander where the OSR window keeps opening by itself about a 1/3 after closing it all the way up. Any suggestions?
Hi Claire,
This sounds like a problem with the window regulator, it could be that the cable has stretched. Replacing the regulator should sort it out.

Sue

Hi, I have replaced the regulator and the window goes up and down on the button but when I use the boot handle the window refuses to drop the inch and allow me to open it, it does release as I can put my palmed on the glass and push it down?
I have tried the re calibration several times
Adam
Hi Adam,
It could be that you have an issue with the actuator which drops the window down. It is mounted on the door lock mechanism.
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sue, thanks for the reply, I have opened up the actuator, cleaned, greeced and it seems to all be functioning fine, you can hear and see it working
Hi my freelander has a problem i just conected the rear window cable to the actuator (rear window motor) and it suddenly droped all the way down and it wont open , i did the recalibration but it doesent worked . What could it be.??
Hi Andres,
Do you mean the window will no longer close? Have you checked for a caught wire. If you put the key in the door and turn it to the right does the window go up?

Mine failed recently. Had wound the tail window down and it wouldnt come back up. Replaced the window mechanism and it lasted about a week. Was driving and the glass dropped into the tailgate. The mechanism had wound down on its own and must have left the glass in place. Did the recalibration, and it made no difference. The mechanism is stuck in the down position and I get 4 beeps when I press the window button. Also the wash/wipe and heater dont work now. Any ideas?
Hi Matt,
It sounds more like an issue with your tailgate door actuator or latch since the vehicle thinks the tailgate door is open, hence the beeping and the washer and demister not working also.
All the best,
Sue
Just fixed my Landrover freelander tailgate window . It used to open itself when you close it and a beep would be heard three times… the solution is to unbolt the tailgate window , put it somewhere safe.. close the car door then remove battery.. connect battery after a few seconds then go and open door… the window rails should go down…close the door listen and watch if the rails go up… repeat open and close for a few more times..if the rails go slightly up when close and slightly down when you open..you good to put back the window… Bolt it and test before you close the door covers.., hope someone will find this useful.. thank you
hello,
how can i open the tail gate door? on my freelander 2004? thanks
Hi Kiwinz,
The only two ways of opening your tailgate window on your Freelander 1 is to either press the key fob open button twice in quick succession, or press the unlock button on the dashboard. Putting the key in the tailgate lock will just raise the tailgate window if it is down.
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sue, I have a 2005 Freelander and the back window doesn’t work at all, neither rear wiper and rear defogger… also when i close the back door, window won’t go up… neither switch does anything but beep 4 times.
People suggested to calibrate rear window by disconnecting the battery wire but then I am worried as my radio will not come up as I don’t know its password.
Any help in this regards will be highly appreciated.
This is my first time with land rover and I bought it last week so please excuse me if I am asking silly questions.
Thanks,
Syed
Hi Syed,
Calibrating the window and disconnecting the battery is unlikely to help in this instance as it sounds as though the tailgate door is not registering as being closed – hence the wiper, de-mister etc. will not work. The problem with either be the tailgate door actuator or the latch itself. If you replace the culprit then everything should work correctly again.

Sue

Sue, firstly, thank you for all your comments and assistance here, I have followed them and managed to get somewhere, but still have an issue I cannot resolve.
So its a 2002 Freelander TD4 4dr Estate.
Initial problem was not being able to open back door with no operation of catch or window, with rear wash-wipe also not working, with the car horn going when setting the alarm, indicating it thought the rear door was not shut.
I have now disconnected the battery several times, run the engine upto 1,500 rpm, checked the regulator wires and looked inside the motor.
I have now got the catch to work and opened the door, but the window is still not operating on either the dashboard switch, or key in the door. The wash-wipe is still not working and the dashboard switch bleeps when trying to lower the window.
Hi Andrew,
Thank you for your message and phone call. As mentioned it sounds like either the tailgate latch or the actuator. Try replacing the actuator first and hopefully this will sort it out.
All the best,
Sue

I have a problem my tailgate window will not go down at all worked intermittent for a while now nothing tried calibration no go just get the beep door opens when I reconnect battery I get a little click at rear motor but nothing else.
Any ideas anyone
Hi Ian,
It sounds like the wires may have snapped, try removing the tailgate door card to check the condition of the regulator wires. If they have snapped then it will be a case of getting a replacement window regulator.
All the best,
Sue
Dear Sue
Re: 2001 five door 1.8 k-series Freelander.
I have two issues with my car, which I believe may be linked and welcome any thoughts you may have.
A. The tailgate door will not open.
B. The central locking has stopped working. I am however able to unlock the driver’s door with the key.
The alarm can still be (dis)/armed using the handset. When the central locking button is pressed, there is a clicking noise in the fuse box. The tailgate window can be opened using the handset and closed using the key in the barrel on the tailgate.
I have recently replaced the tailgate window regulator as a complete unit and the window can also be raised and lowered using the switch on the centre console, the rear windscreen wiper also works.
Connecting a battery to the tailgate latch using a cable cut from a donor door opens the tailgate. Suggesting that the latch is working.
I have read that there is a calibration procedure:
‘1. Turn ignition to position II.
2. Press & hold fog lamp switch.
3. Turn ignition off.
4. Turn ignition to position II.
5. Release fog lamp switch.
There should be a beep to signal that the self-test is ready. At which point you press the central locking button in the car.’
However I have been unable to successfully carry this out.
If you have any thoughts on this it would be much appreciated.
Bill
Dear Bill,
If your central locking is not working then you will not be able to open the tailgate door other than by the switch on the dash. If all other doors open with this switch but not the tailgate then you possibly have an issue with the actuator in the tailgate door.
The problem with your central locking is likely to be a faulty actuator in the drivers door.
I have not seen that recalibration procedure, have you tried:
8. If you get a warning buzzer then the calibration has failed, otherwise that’s it, your tailgate window is recalibrated.
and if this does not work try:
All the best,
Sue

Hi,
Having what I initially thought was a wiper problem on the tailgate of my 54 plate Freelander. Upon investigation, found that the back window was not operating via the switch. It does however, drop slightly when the tailgate is opened and then closes when you shut it. Have tried the battery recalibration method, the window dropped as it should, but now will not open fully. Completely out of ideas now and would appreciate any advice you could give me.
Kevan H.
Hi Kevan,
Is the wiper on the tailgate working now? If it is not then it could be that the ECU believes the tailgate door is open, and hence will not operate the wiper, nor will it operate the window from the switch. If this is the case it would be a case of replacing the door latch / actuator. If the wiper is working consistently then you may have a faulty switch.
If the window is no longer opening fully (is this when you try to open it with the key fob?) then it may be that there is something dislodged which is obstructing it. It is worth taking the tailgate door card off to check there is no obstruction.
All the best,
Sue

Hi Sue,
Many thanks for your prompt response. Subsequent to my post, I tried disconnecting the battery again, leaving it for a few minutes before reconnecting. This time, with the engine running, I managed to close the tailgate via the console switch. This time, the window opened and closed several times and appeared to be working fine. However, when I operated the rear wiper switch, not only did the wiper not operate, the tailgate window has stopped operating. From reading other posts, would I be correct in assuming that the wiper has failed and is not in it’s home position, thus the ECU believes that the wiper is operating and prevents the window from operating ? I assume also, that this can be remedied by replacing the ECU ?
Many thanks for your help thus far.
Kevan H.
Hi Kevan,
No, replacing the ECU is unlikely to help. If the issue is because the tailgate door is not registering as being closed then the issue will be with the latch/actuator on the tailgate door. However, if the issue is a fault with the wiper, since you can get the window to work, then check for a short in the wiper wiring and check if the wiper relay is operating. To access the relay you will need to remove the right hand (when facing in toward the tailgate) side panel in the boot space.
All the best,
Sue
My heated rear window on my 2006 td4 does not work I have read that if the rear window has not been calibrated it will not work . As far as I can see the rear window works fine ie opens a little when I open the tail gate and closes when I turn the key in the lock .At some stage it has had a new glass fitted and the connections for the heated rear window were not refitted can you please help
Hi David,
When you close the tailgate door does the window go back up or do you have to put the key in the lock to put it up? If you have to put the key in to take it up then the window is not calibrated properly as it should automatically raise. If it is not raising then it is not acknowledging it is closed and hence the heated rear window would not work, neither would the wiper.

Hi there i don’t know if you can help me please
Hi Sue i think you giving me the help few years ago 3 i think with my back rear window of my td4 freelander 3 doors this time is about the lock on the rear back door what i try is recalibrate it but lookslike is something else is the problem few days ago my ignition was okay but for some reason one day is not fire the engine so i call the recovery team and the engineer told me that riley outside of the fuse box in the engine was meld but for someone reason all the others engineers told me is not a problem that so i got my M.O.T done and everything was okay until 3 days ago my rear door want open every time i trying to open the door the window going down but not in of just little bit and that is it is not open the back door at all.
Everything else works fine i can drop my back window from the switch off the driver wiper is okay not any lights or warning coming up please can you please help me with that matter i really appreciate it your advice and support i will thank you very much in advance thanks again Sincerely Yanni Balamatsias
Hi Yanni,
If, when you press on the handle, the window is dropping the small amount that it should but the door is not releasing then the problem is likely to be with the door latch itself. The difficulty will be to get enough access to try to sort it out, you will need to see if you can get the door panel off enough to be able to see what is happening in there.
All the best,
Sue
Hi there. PROBLEMS. Someone reversed into my freelancer td4 in a car park and following faults occurred that I cannot rectify >> 1.Tailgate glass has dropped at a very bad angle and will not go back up straight or stay up. 2. Tailgate door will not open at all. Drivers door keeps getting stuck locked and have to climb over back seat to unlock from inside. (Key goes IN all my locks but don’t lock or unlock doors. ) HELP PLEASE ! I cannot afford a fortune to go get repaired and car currently insecure with tailgate glass down and lopsided.
Hi Jimbo,
Sorry to hear somebody has reversed into your Freelander. The tailgate door does not open with the key, they key hole is only used for putting the tailgate window up – insert the key and turn and hold it in a clockwise direction and the window should go up – it does not control the door opening and closing at all. The only ways of unlocking the tailgate door are from the second press of the key fob or from the unlock button on the dashboard.
Has the door been distorted from the impact? It sounds as though you may have some slight distortion there which is causing the problem. If this is the case the cheapest way to deal with it would be to get another door from a dismantlers and fit this. If you are convinced there is no distortion then remove the door panel on the tailgate door and check the tailgate window regulator and how the glass is sitting in it.

Hi, since yesterday my oil light comes on my freelander but my rear window heater button stops working… thinking its possibly electrical but cant see where the wires would connect to cause this problem?! Please help as need to sort it today before school run at 3pm!! :/ x
Also i have checked the oil levels and it’s fine x
Hi Sarah,
The oil light is an indication of an issue with oil pressure not oil level so you would need to get this sorted out. It is unlikely that the issue with your rear window heater button is connected with the oil pressure light.

Hi. …I have a freelander 05 td4….I recently recharged the battery after a few months of standing….the rear window powered down and now I cannot get the window to close at all….there is no movement what so ever…..would you have any ideas? Many thanks Phil
Hi Phil,
Can you hear the motor working? If so then it is likely the wires have snapped. If you cannot hear the motor then that is likely to be the issue. Both of these problems would require you to replace the window regulator.

Hi sue do you no how much it is to get your tailgate window regulator.done plz
Hi Shaun,
We only use genuine Land Rover on the tailgate window as we have not found a reliable aftermarket regulator for this window yet. The regulator is £157.52 + VAT and the fitting is £31.25 + VAT. Hence the total, including the VAT, is £226.52.

Hi Sue,
I am having similar trouble with the tailgate handle of my 2004 Freelander; from time to time the door just won’t close properly and the back window won’t go up to fill the small gap that’s left after closing the door. This happens specially when the weather is hot or when the car has been under direct sunlight for awhile. Sometimes even if it is parked and locked properly, after being under the sun for awhile the alarm goes off and when turned on, both the Open Door Light in the dashboard and the one inside the trunk stay ON. I tried adjusting the door catch without actual success. I insist, this is a sporadic failure and specially frequent when under direct sunlight. Can you give me some advice? Thank you so much in advance.
Hi Arturo,
It sounds like you are getting a fault on the door actuator when it gets too much heat. It would be advisable to replace the actuator before it fails completely.

Hi Sue,
Please help
I have an issue with my Freelander 1 (2001).
My tailgate handle has snapped off the door.
I have purchased a new handle and re-connected the cables but its not working and now I can’t open my tailgate at all.
These are the symptoms:
– pressing the new handle does absolutely nothing – the door doesn’t unlock, and the window doesn’t move.
– I cannot hear any noises coming from the lock when pressing the handle.
– when I operate the window with the dashboard switch – the window works fine, BUT it will only fully open with a single press or fully close with a single press – it won’t stop half way through – i.e. it only shuts completely or opens completely (nothing in between).
What could be the issue please and how do I unlock the tailgate – it is stuck in the locked position. I cannot attach the new handle until I can open the tailgate.
Everything was working perfectly fine until my old handle snapped off the door.
Please help?
Many thanks
Greg
Hi Greg,
It is possible that the wires which operate the door lock have snapped. If this is the case you will need to climb into the boot and try to get the door card off enough to get access to the right hand corner of the door, which is where the wires are situated, and see if you can identify the problem.

Sue

Hi sue
I have 53 plate freelander 1 es premium td4.
I have just fitted a new tailgate handle due a broken old one.
All appears to be fine apart from when I try to open the tailgate, the rear window drops to allow it to open but doesn’t completely clear the plastic trim at the top (I can slide it down to make it clear as it only catches slightly).
When the tailgate is open you can push the window down to the correct position for opening, shut it and the window returns to the correct position with no problems.
I have tried recalibrating it using both methods but the problem persists.
I’m wondering if this could be a problem with the window mechanism itself being worn or with the door actuator?
The new handle was a brand new complete unit (plug and play).
Any advise would be fantastic.
Regards Sean
Hi Sean,
It sounds like you need to adjust the window regulator, in particular the position at which the window sits on the side mounts. If you move it down a little the window should then function correctly.

HI SUE I HAVE A FREELANDER TD4 DIESEL 2003 3 DOOR REMOVABLE HARD TOP.
RECENTLY THE TAIL GATE WINDOW STUCK ON THE UP POSITION AND I HAD TO LIFT THE ROOF UP TO RELEASE IT AND OPEN THE DOOR THE WINDOW WILL NOT GO DOWN AT ALL AND THE WINDOW HEATER WILL NOT WORK AS WELL AS THE BACK WIND SCREEN WIPER ALTHOUGH THE DOOR HANDLE WORKS. WHEN I PRESS THE WINDOW BUTTON ON THE CONSUL IT BEEPS A FEW TIMES BUT NOTHING HAPPENS. I HAVE DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY AND RECONNECTED TO TRY AND RE CALIBRATE BUT TO NO SUCCESS. CAN YOU GIVE ME SOME ADVISE.
THANKS JONNY
Hi Jonny,
It sounds as though the ECU thinks that either the tailgate door is not closed or the window is not up – this is what causes the heater and wiper not to work. If your window is not dropping down when you reconnect the battery then take the door card off and check if the wires on the window regulator are snapped. If, when you press the button or turn the key in the tailgate door lock, you do not hear the window motor running then it could be the window regulator motor. Both of these issues mean you will need to replace the window regulator – we would recommend using genuine Land Rover as we are yet to find a reliable aftermarket regulator for the tailgate. If the wires are in tact and the motor is working then it could be the door actuator which is not registering the door is closed, in which case you would need to replace this.
All the best,
Sue

Hi,
a few days ago during the cold weather I opened the rear door of my Freelander to remove some equipment and on closing it noticed that the windscreen wasn’t sliding up correctly to seal. That small movement it makes when you open the door isn’t happening. I managed to gently align the glass and the door will close and glass remains up. However now there seems to be no power going to the window, wiper or rear heated window.
Any help would be greatly received, thank you.
Hi Adam,
The wiper and rear heated window will not work if the Freelander is not registering that the door is closed properly or the window is closed properly. You could try recalibrating the window, however, if you cannot get the window to go up or down on the button in the dashboard then the issue is either the window regulator itself (if you take the door panel off you should be able to see if the wires have broken) or the switch itself. If the switch is a problem then you should still be able to put the window up by using the key in the tailgate lock. If the issue is not the window then it will be the door actuator which is not registering that the door is closed.
All the best,
Sue

Hi there,
I have a freelander 1 diesel 2002. With major tailgate issues. It won’t open, the window mechanism is stuck in the down position. There are dashboard buttons not working, including the tailgate switch, tailgate washer and wiper, the door open warning light also shows on the dash. The fog lamp doesn’t work (which did last week).
Ok. I replaced the stereo with a modern one. Cut all the wires and fitted the new stereo, there were multiple wires left over.
I replaced the tailgate window mechanism, refitted the window, motor and wiper motor. Also re connected up the lock (which previous owner had disconnected to stop him opening in case he forgot that the window was up and he broke it). Absolutely nothing is happening.
The key and handle button to open the tailgate do nothing.
I have managed to open the door by removing the panel and lock cover letting me have access to the solenoid and I can manually switch it.
When I diaconnnected the battery, tailgate window mechanism went into reset mode and dropped the window. Because the switch on the dashboard doesn’t work, I couldn’t reset it.
I have a diagnostic tester that plugs into the diagnostic port under the dash and it doesn’t work. The unit recognised it connected to the car but cannot talk to the ecu.
I had to replace the battery as the car would not start this morning. I now have a srs warning light showing on the dash since fitting the new battery….
Any help would be gratefully received, I am about at my limit for fault finding. I have checked the earths and fuses, all seem good..
I am tempted to take the main earth off and clean it, but am not sure if it would make any difference.
Help!!
Many thanks in advance!
Derek
Hi Derek,
It sounds as though your core problem with the tailgate could be the door actuator. If this is not registering that the door is closed then you will not be able to control the window and the washer, wiper etc. will not function. Try changing the actuator.
The SRS light being on is connected to the function of the airbag. Issues with this unit are generally either a fault in the unit itself or an issue with the wire under the drivers seat which may have been caught if you moved the position of the seat at all.

Sue

Hi can you help please my back door on my freelander only opens when it wants to I can open and close the back window with the button on the dash board is there a way of opening the back doke manually please thanx in advance
Hi Julie,
Unfortunately the only way of unlocking the tailgate door is with the keyfob or the button on the dash. If it has an intermittent fault and will not open at times then it is possibly a problem with the door actuator which will need replacing.

Hi Sue looking for a little help if possible? Just disconnected my battery to work on the in tank electric fuel pump on my freelander 1, everything working fine there, but reconnection has brought tailgate window issue, window moves up fine does the beep beep beep thing then lowers I have tried both recalibration procedures mentioned on your site to no avail, it’s a 3 door petrol late 2005 and answers to the name of Margaret. Any info will help, thanks Mick
Hi Mick,
When you reconnect the battery does Margaret’s window go right to the bottom, to the extent that you can no longer see it? If it does not then this is the issue, try disconnecting and reconnecting the battery again.

Sue

No, it doesn’t disappear I’ve disconnected the battery a couple of times over the last 2 days the only way I can keep the window closed is by raising the window with the power button and then disconnect the battery negative just before the beeps kick in, I’ve strangely long arms by the way, this trick manages to keep the north east weather out of the vehicle, along with the honest people, but on reconnection the window drops to approximately three quarters of the way down with a quarter of glass remaining and refuses the calibration procedures, this website is excellent by the way, thanks for getting back to me.
Hi Mick,
You need to remove the cover from the tailgate door and check the mechanism itself, it sounds like you have a problem with it which is preventing the window from going down fully.
Thank you for your kind words on our website.

Sue

Hi Sue, done as you suggested and removed the cover from the tailgate door and lo and behold the cable cluster had moved from where it was meant to be to where it wanted to be and this was preventing the panel from dropping to its normal position everything working fine now, brilliant site just saved a wad of cash that would choke a donkey!! Not that I would ever choke a donkey with a wad of cash, it wouldn’t be nice or cheap. Wishing a happy festive period to you and yours. Brilliant website thanks for your help!!

Hi
I recently got a new car stereo fitted in my Freelander 1 Td4 05. I noticed the tailgate window & sunroof have stopped working after having it fitted. Could this just be coincidence or can fitting a new stereo affect the window/sunroof ? I don’t have any motor sounds when pressing the buttons just completely dead. The tailgate window drops slightly to allow the boot door to open.
Cheers
Hi Robert,
It sounds like the switches have somehow come disconnected. If you put the key in the tailgate door lock and turn it does the window come down? If so then check the connections to the tailgate window switch and the sunroof switch.

My rear window has closed up outside of the frame so it is bent out. When I try and use the dashboard button I get an alarm noise. Window won’t go down. Garage wants to charge me £130 to take the panel off. Will disconnecting battery work for me?
Hi Rachel,
It is worth disconnecting your battery as this should cause the window to drop. Once it has dropped you can try recalibrating it.

Hi Sue
I’m having the same problem as Russel.
My battery was disconnected for work today, by a garage.
As I drove home, I noticed the tailgate window had dropped and will not remain closed.
I have tried both of the procedures suggested, but to no avail.
Any further suggestions would be welcome.
Thank you
Hi Alistair,
If the window is going up but not staying up then clearly the mechanism is still working. Try opening the door and, with the door open, lock the door using a screwdriver in the lock mechanism. Then try to raise the window. What happens? Does it go up and stay up? If so then there is an obstruction on the door which is stopping it from getting all the way up and hence it is dropping down again.
All the best,
Sue

Hi Sue,
I am having issues with recalibrating my tailgate window on my freelander 1. I have tried both ways and still the same beep and the window drops. Was wondering if you have had any issues like this. Also does the same when working with the key on the tailgate. Thanks in advance Russell.
Hi Russell,
What is happening to your tailgate window, is it refusing to close? If you lock the Freelander do you get a beep?
It sounds like the recalibration has worked but there is an issue elsewhere. It could be that the window switch in the cabin has a problem, so it is worth changing this. The other issue could be a faulty tailgate door actuator so the vehicle thinks the tailgate door is open and hence will not close the window.

Hello,
I have just taken off the hard top on my 2006 3dr TD4 Freenlander 1 and installed the soft top. Unfortunately it now seems that the rear window no longer raises. I see that from the haynes manual there is a “roof on” switch and i suspect that this is not closed and thus preventing the tailgate to rise. Any ideas where the roof on switch is located?
Thanks
Richard
Hi Richard,
It is on the pillar where the removable roof connects to the main body, on the drivers side.

Hi
I wonder if you can advise. The alarm on my 2004 5 Dr TD4 goes off randomly on hit days. It is caused by the tailgate. The dash light says a door is open. The rear window will go down with the switch but not up. I can get it to go up with the key. The window will drop to open the tailgate but won’t raise again, presumably because it thinks it’s still open. If I leave the vehicle in the shade for an hour it is ok again. Could you tell me what the problem is?
Thanks
Sorry that should have read ‘hot’ days

Hi Matt,
It sounds like an issue with the door actuator not registering the door is closed because the window has not gone up. Changing this will hopefully resolve the problem.

Hi Graham,
The issue with the passenger window sounds like the switch.. With regard to the tailgate, if you put your key in the tailgate door lock and turn it does the window go up? If it does then the issue is the switch and perhaps it is getting burnt out, otherwise it is going to be the window mechanism.

Hello
I have a problem with my Freelander tailgate window.
– When i close the door the window does not go up and i must use the inside control or the key to get it up, usually with the warning buzz.
– When i open the door the window comes down, some times the normal way and others just a litle that that is just enought to open the door.
– I tried to disconect the battery to calibrate the window but it doesn´t come down when i reconnect it.
– Another issue is that when trying to open the door it does not unlock completly on first try and i need to press again, with this some times the window comes down a litle more.
– With the key or the inside control the window only does up or down in steps with the buzz warning signal on.
So, what could be the reason for this to appen?
Best regards
Hi Joao,
The problem is likely to be with the door actuator, if you change this everything should work correctly.

Hello!
I have Freelander TD4 (2003).
I can fully open or fully close tailgate window! But not to stop in the middle somewhere!
If I start to open (from cabin button) and release button somewhere in the middle, window will continue open all the way down!
And when I start to close – holding button down and released in the middle – window will go back to down fully open!
Can anybody help?
Hello Edgar,
Are you trying to adjust the window with the engine running? Strangely, the window is designed for setting with the ignition on but the engine off. This means when you try to adjust it with the engine running it does not tend to work and just goes all the way up or down.
All the best,
Sue

Hey Sue!
Dont remember how this situation exactly was!
But I will try with engine off.
Will let you know!
In this case it is very strange windows operating system!

Edgar
Excellent Edgar, please do let us know.
All the best,
Sue
halloo Sue!
Yes, I can do it with engine off and ignition on!
Strange system!!!
Is it designed this way (as you said) or something hack (alternative) way?
Many thanks!!!
Edgar
Excellent Edgar, at least you can now get it to work properly. This is actually how it is designed.

Sue

you get a warning buzzer then the calibration has failed, otherwise that’s it, your tailgate window is recalibrated.
before trying this can you tell us what happens if the warning buzzer comes in…will it stop on its own ?? do you have to end up calling a garage ??
you help is much appreciated
chris
Hi Chris,
The warning buzzer is just a short beep, it turns off itself so you do not need to call a garage. You can safely try this procedure without doing any damage.

Hi sue
I need to change the water pump on my Freelander 1 2003 2L diesel. I am having problems getting to the pump. What is the best way to gain access and change it please.
Thanks

Hi Stin,
The easiest way is to remove the rocker cover and the engine mount.

HI Sue
I’ve recently bought my first LR, a Kalahari 2003 TD4 at auction and am loving it, but have a problem with the tailgate. When i try to open the tailgate the window doesn’t lower by itself and it also doesnt move when i try to lower it from the electric window button on the dashboard, it does make a whirring noise and makes four short beeps. I’ve tried disconnecting the battery as instructed but there is no obvious change. The rear window (behind the drivers seat) also doesn’t open although sounds like it’s trying to….any ideas please?
Thanks
Dan
Hi Daniel,
Congratulations on your purchase. They are brilliant vehicles.
It sounds like the wires have snapped in both the tailgate and rear window, hence the motor is trying to open them but there is nothing connected. You can get repair kits for the wires very cheaply but you do need a lot of patience to use them! Otherwise it is a case of changing the whole window regulator, which is much less of a headache than the repair kits.

Sue

2006 freelander td4, tailgate window drops when battery off and on, window goes back to top with switch, doesn’t bleep or anything then won’t go down again with switch. Does still drop when door opened as it should, rear wiper doesn’t work any ideas what the vault could be, it’s a new motor factors window reg
Cheers
Hi Mike,
It sounds like an issue with the relay which is behind the right hand panel at the side of the boot area since the wiper is not working. If this is not the problem check the switch itself.

Sue

I have a 04 plate Freelander when I drop the rear window it all works ok but as soon as I press the rear windscreen wiper it stops the rear window from working so then I have to remove battery re calibrate rear window but again as soon as I press the windscreen washer on the back it stops the window working once again
Hi Ian,
This sounds like an electrical issue with the wipers causing a short in the circuit. You will need to check the wiring and the switches to determine where the issue is.

Hi Sue, I have a 2003 Freelander 1 which I’ve had since it was 1 year old. Over the years I have had intermittent problem with the rear tailgate, when I squeeze the handle, the window drops a little but there is not the familiar “click” and the tailgate will not open. a year ago I even stripped out the rear door panel and also checked the relays behind the side trim but it miraculously just fixed itself so I have never got to the bottom of it. It’s playing up again now – please can you advise what is the most likely root cause, thanks so much Matt.
Hi Matt,
This is liable to be either the wiring from the handle switch to the actuator or the actuator itself.
All the best,
Sue

Dear Sue, thank you very much for your valued opinion. I will strip out the rear tailgate and investigate, kindest regards,
Matt.
It’s a pleasure Matt.
Hi Sue,
I have a slight problem with my tailgate window, when I open the door it come down ok and when I close the door it goes up but at a slight angle, so I have to push it up to straighten it, the window in the door housing seems loose to, is this a common fault, I dont want to start messing with it as I only have limited car knowlage!! and as it still works I dont want to make it worse.
It just bugs me 🙂
Thanks and regards Dom
Hi Dom,
Yes, it is a common problem. It needs adjusting, you will need to take the door panel off and adjust using the bottom nuts which hold the window rail.
All the best,
Sue

Ok Sue, thanks for that I’ll give it a try, does the door panel come of easy?
Thanks again
Hi Dom,
The door panel is very simple, just four screws at the bottom and pull it out.

Hi there,
I have a Freelander MK1 and have an issue with the tailgate window opening when the car is unlocked. The only way to ensure it goes back up and stays up is to use the key in the lock on the tailgate. Have tried the recalibration process but no luck.
Any suggestions gratefully received!
Thanks
Iain
Hi Iain,
There is a possibility the keyfob button is getting stuck down, as this would bring the tailgate window down, so wirth checking the keyfob and also check the switch on the tailgate that it is not stuck open.

Sue

Hi Sue,
Many thanks for the prompt reply.
Being new to the Freelander and not yet having a Haynes manual are you able to clarify where the switch on the tailgate is?
Thanks again!
Iain
Hi Iain,
The switch is in the tailgate handle, the part underneath that you press to get the window to drop slightly.

I have a freelander , my question is at the rear door there is a black frame at the top , if you take the black plastic bar frame thing off there is a metal bar thing screwed into the vehicle. It has that soft stuff on it sowhen the window touches it , it’s doesn’t break .
My problem is the bar is all rusty and I want to replace it but I don’t know what it is called
Hi Grant,
We have looked through the entire parts catalogue to try to get you a part number but unfortunately have not been able to find it. It is possible that it is not a part which is available separately, hence the only way would be the scrap yard I’m afraid.

Hi just got 2002 freelander tailgate intermittent door dose not close 4 or 5 attempts to close it can you tell me how to fix it thank you Jim
Hi James,
This is likely to be an issue with the tailgate door actuator, if you change this all should operate as expected.

hi Sue
Thank for help before. I have another problem now. The freelander would not start so I tapped the fuel filter under the wheel arch and it started up again. however I think it will let me down again as I think it is intermittent. is there a picture I can see to check that the pipes I have attached are correctly attached. to the filter pump and the other filter type canister next to the filter and pump.
Thanks
stin
Hi Stin,
It could be your low pressure fuel pump beginning to fail if you are finding the fault to be intermittent.
I will email you the diagram.

Hi Sue
I have done both recalibrations.
Currently, after a global lock, all OK except rear window does not close the last 25mm or so. It will close if the key is placed in the rear door handle and turned right.
When a global unlock occurs, the window drops 25mm (as it would if the rear door was about to be opened) and it stays that way.
So, windows motor appears OK, relay must be OK (I assume), so is it the actuator? The problem only occurred after a recent electrical relay fault that was sorted by a local mechanic.
Regards
Richard
Hi Richard,
It sounds as though the latch on the door handle is stuck in the open position. Check the spring on the part of the door handle you press to open it.

Sue

My tailgate window has gone down. And now will not come back up. Roy
Hi Roy,
Can you hear the motor when you try to raise the window? If not then it could be the fuse, relay or motor itself. If you can hear the motor then it could be one of the wires which has snapped, in which case the best thing would be to change the regulator.
All the best,
Sue

No only clicking from behind the side panel, when i press the open & close switch.
It sounds like you need to replace the window regulator Roy as it is most likely the motor.

I have another problem with my freelander Mk1
That is that when I unlock the car, only one door catch goes up and unlocks the car. Two of the doors door catches don’t go up, and one, seems to be stuck in the open position and will not lock, You can’t even push it down.
Thanks
Stin
Sue thanks for your earlier reply the Actuator I need to change. Is that the motor which turns the window up and down or the lock actuator. Am little confused as to exactly which part it is.
Hi Stin,
It is the lock actuator, this is what controls the slight movement of the window when the door is opened and closed.
The doors which you are having a problem with will need the door actuators changed too, then they should lock and unlock fine.

I have an issue with the tailgate window not coming down slightly so that I can open the door.. Only way is to push window down a little before pulling the door open. I can hear the micro switches operating when I use the handle though. When I shut the door the window goes up. What can I do to sort this.

The problem you are having is caused by a faulty door actuator, change this and all should be fine.

You need to check the relay for the tailgate window. Remove the panel on the right hand side in the boot and you will find the relay at the top.

Hi there.
I have read all your procedures for recalibration and followed them but my problem persists.
The problem is that my rear window will not drop with the opening of the tailgate nor can I drop it via the internal button…but if I open the door and push the window down a little I can use the button to drop the window but it’ll only go back up with the key in the door.
Any help is appreciated.
Ian
Hi Ian,
This sounds like an issue with the actuator on the door, it is registering the door is open when it is closed. Change the actuator and all should be fine.

Further to last post should point out that when i reconnected the battery the window did not drop like people saying it should have
Thanks
Hi Nick,
Disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes can reset a lot of things.
Did you try the two re-calibration procedures above to re-calibrate the window? Can you hear the motor operating when you press the button? If the calibrations do not work and you can hear the motor then one of the wires may have snapped. If you cannot hear the motor then the motor could be your issue.
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sue,
The tailgate window on my 2005 freelander is giving me a headache! I have replaced the mech and am still having issues. When I press the switch down, the motor does nothing. When I press up, the window goes up half an inch then stops. There is a grinding sound and lots of beeping from the dash. I have tested the motor and mech by hand and they both appear to be fine. Help please!
Hi Jack,
What happens when you put the key in the tailgate door to take the window up, does the window rise then? Have you checked that none of the wires are caught up?

Hi All
I have on 2005 1.8 petrol Freelander, a while ago the door would not open, the Window also did not open from the up/down switch or Fob. I read that if you disconnect the battery it can fix it so i did that, now the door does open so it did fix that issue however the Window still does not open by the switch or fob, even when you open the door the windows does not drop like it should but the door still opens, to close the door i have to apply a bit of pressure to the top of the window so it bends slightly and goes back in place behind the plastic trim to allow the door to shut flush.
I then read that if you press the lock button on the key fob 6 times it calibrates the window, i have tried this and it did not fix it however now when i try to use the down switch i get a beeping noise which i didn’t before.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
Nick
my freelander1 tailgate window only moves about 1mm when I try to open the tailgate. Now have to open window first to get into the back. Initially this started with intermittantly nothing happening when tailgate handle operated.

Hi I had a new cable fitted to my tailgate as it snapped now for some reason when I open the door the window doesn’t drop to allow the door to open a suggestion on what it could be please
Hi Neal,
If the window is not dropping then there is an issue with the installation in that it has not been tightened enough on the wheel.

two week a go, I have take out – cable from batery of my freelander1, and than tailgate window go down, and after that cant go up anyhow. I go at service, they check parts and say everything is ok, so they not correct nothing, but when put back all parts, window work good. In service was confused with that, and not take money for service, becouse as they say, they do nothing. Today same situation, window go down , and nothing can help to go up. Many time I try with batery, try reset metod, when press switch button for up, nothing happen, when press switch down, can hear one beeep (one second) but nothing other. Can you help me with some sugestion? Thank you in advance.
Hi Sale,
Have you tried both of the recalibration procedures?
The other problem which may be causing this is a loose connection or electrical fault on one of the wires. You can try dismantling the window mechanism and testing it on the table, checking the wiring in the door itself and checking the wires and relay from the door to the front of the Freelander.
All the best,
Sue

My tailgate handle broke hubby glued it numerous times now has stopped working only thing is I cannot get door open and need to if a new hanle were to go on window working fine from window switch
Hi Niki,
Since your handle is already broken what you can to is remove the two screws by the part of the handle un derneath which you press in when you are opening the door. Remove the wiring and plug the wiring into the new handle. You should then be able to use the new handle to operate the door and get it open in order for you to install the handle.
Good luck!

hi ive recently purchased a td4 2003 freelander, now and again the tc and hill decent light comes on, just the two,if i pull over turn ignition off then on again they go off, i got a data check a fault came up about hydraulic pump says 0, they said it maybe a fuse or the pump, could that be what’s causing the two lights to come on ,the freelander has done 169000miles no history ,how can i resolve this problem thank you. .Shaun
Hi Shaun,
The issue with your lights illuminating is most likely to be the brake light switch situated under the brake pedal. If you press your brakes when the TC and HDC are alight do your brake lights come on? The hydraulic pump is connected to the ABS system so it could be worth cleaning the ABS sensors.
All the best,
Sue
0780 9575 421
hi sue ,
checked L shaped brake light switch under brake pedal, unclipped the switch ,brake lights came on ,put switch back, had a drive about until the tc and hill decent light came on,pulled over checked brake lights, no brake light on unless i press brake pedal..so does that mean swicswitch is okay.
you mentioned the abs sensors were are they located and best way to clean them pls.
Thank you. .
Shaun
Hi Shaun,
The brake light switch is the problem if the brake lights DO NOT come on when you press the brake pedal and the TC and HDC lights are illuminated. If your brake lights did come on when you press the brake pedal then the brake light switch should be fine.
The ABS sensors are located on each of the wheels, however you will have to remove the drive shafts in order to clean them. Just clean with a cloth and some cleaning solvent such as brake cleaner.

Sue

Hi, recently bought a freelander TD4 03plate, got a few issues i could do with a bit of advise about,
1- water in the storage box in boot area
2- tailgate window not dropping when opening tailgate, works fine when shutting and from button on dash
3- sunroof making a ratcheting sound when trying to open
many thanks gary
Hi Gary,
Congratulations on your purchase.
With regard to your issues:
1. To solve this you need to change the tailgate door seal, rather an expensive fix at £289.22. Alternatively you can just drill a hole in the bottom of the compartment to let the water drain out.
2. Try recalibrating this -http://www.freelanderspecialist.com/freelander-1/fl1-problems/freelander-1-tailgate-window-problems.
3. This is likely to be the sunroof motor, is it opening fine on the tracks? The sunroof on the Freelander 1 is a bit of a nightmare, you need to make sure you open it regularly if you have a working one. We do have a good used sunroof motor at the moment if it is this which is the problem.
All the best,
Sue
0780 9575 421
thanks sue, ouch that seems expensive for a door seal
i’ll try recalibrating when i get chance and let you know the outcome
how much would the motor be and do you post?
once again thanks for your response
gary
It is incredibly expensive for just a bit of rubber Gary, even though it is an upgraded piece of rubber!
The tailgate window regulator is £180.49 for genuine Land Rover. The aftermarket ones are not great and the price difference is not so much anymore that we would tend to recommend genuine Land Rover.

Hi Sue,i have a problem with my rear window,it’s not working so well. Sometimes when i want to take down the window it doesn’t work, and sometimes the doors icon it’ activated but all the doors are closed(it’caused by the rear window), please help me(sorry for my English).
Hi George,
This is generally a problem with the tailgate door actuator. If this is faulty it does not register that the door is closed and hence the window does not work correctly either. Change this and all should be fine.

Hello, my 98 auto 5 door freelander is leaking a thick red fluid into my car on the passengers side from under the dash, its also leaking out from under the car toward the front bumper in the middle. Is it more likely to be power-steering fluid or transmission fluid?…or something else? Thanks for your time. 🙂
Hello MissRie,
Which Freelander do you have as in 1998 no automatic Freelanders were available, the only models were the 1.8 petrol and the 2.0 TDI diesel, both of which are manual.
If you are using the red coolant it is likely to be this which is leaking into the passenger footwell through a leak in the heater matrix.
A leak in the front middle could be a coolant leak again from the radiator or associated hoses.

Hi Sue,
I have a freelander 1 and I have problem with the tailgate window. When I push the button to open the gate, the window does not go down a little bit as it should and I don’t hear anything. It’s like dead.If i force the door to open and help the window to go down, when closing everything works correctly. Its closing like it should.I tried the calibration procedure but nothing happened. The window works correctly when using the window control on the dashboard. The only issue is when trying to open the door.
Please advise.
Thanks in advance.
Vangelis
Hi Vangelis,
Check the switch on the door handle as this is what activates the window going down. If this seems fine then the problem will be with the actuator.

Hi Sue,
I was away for a while and disconnected the negative lead of my Freelander battery. When I reconnected, my tailgate window did not automatically go down and when I attempt to lower it from the consol switch, it makes a beeping sound. If I try to open the tailgate, the window does not drop but the actuator controlling the door latch releases the door.
Please advise.
Thanks Mike

Sue,
please assist , i noticed a rapid oil leak on my freelander V6 (2003 model) petrol engine.when checked one component is missing and i can see something like a shaft rotating on the end when i start the engine and that’s where the oil is leaking. The mechanic told me that it’s a camshaft end cover which is missing.
Please advise where i can get this component or i can send you the photo showing the area where this component came out.

Hi Clement,
We can supply the seal for £5.12, although you may be best to get it from your local Land Rover, the part number is LUC100150L. Check if there is a normal seal in there. It can be replaced with a normal camshaft seal rather than a cap if required.

Hi,
Superb comments re the problems of others.
My problem is similar but…
So I have a freelander1 td4 2005.
Its been through the mill and I had to change the tailgate handle some 8 or 9 years ago. I cannot remember the exact problem with the window though.
This time …
I closed the tailgate and probably too hard and the glass wound slowly down and now hidden.
Firstly tried disconnecting battery at both terminals.
Ignition on, pressed up button on centre console and just the beeps. Also beeps on down button.
Then tried this
Shut tailgate. Pressed fob unlock with key turned in lock. No success.
Most methods tried and usually I can hear the beeps from the centre console when holding handle in or using fob.
When pressing in the handle (not touching but pressing) there is the click click sound. I am sure that I have to usually firmly press handle to open so now I am thinking the micro switch is gone in the handle or one f the two springs?
But everything probably pointing towards a replacement handle. I have since found that if it is the two springs then they can be replaced cheaply but I have not removed the door handle yet. Not sure if a special tool needed if it is the springs.
The other thing to mention is sometimes the computer recognises the door is open.. sometimes not. When locking the car with fob it gives the car not armed warning beeps. Other times it locks with the usual armed beeps.
So based on what I have said above.. is it looking like the door handle or is there something I have overlooked or need to further check? I have taken off the door cover inside and the workings inside the door appear to be in good order with no obvious breakages.
Many thanks
John in Gloucester
Hi John,
This does sound like either the door latch or the door actuator – it is very difficult to determine which is at fault and, since they can come in a pack together at a cheaper price than purchasing them individually, we tend to replace both at once. The real key is that it is not recognising the door as being closed, in which case it will not move the window.
All the best,
Sue
Very appreciated Sue and thank you for replying.
I have just found someone, in the know apparently, who is going to do some more tests. Though I suspect, as you say, it is the door latch or actuator. A replacement door handle appears very much on the cards methinks.
Thanks again
John
Hi John,
It is not the handle we think you need, it is the latch and actuator – these are not part of the handle, they are part number FQR000010, £155.07 + VAT.
