Good afternoon,
We are a Jaguar / LandRover specialist and we are looking for a 2.5 petrol V6 for one of our customers Freelander 1.
Do you have any in stock at the moment or would we need to remove and send the currently one for refurbishment?
The customer has overheated the engine quite badly.
Kind regards
Chris
Hi Chris,
My profound apologies for the delay in responding, somehow the notices of comments on our site have not been coming through to us.
Unfortunately we are having big problems with the V6 engines now. It seems the vast majority of the crankshafts need grinding but we cannot get the oversized bearings. So it is with great sadness that we now longer are able to rebuild them.
All the best,
Sue
I just brought 2005 landrover freelander 2.5V6.Because of engine noise,I opened buttom of engine and found crank shaft and all half bearing were damaged.
So I want to buy crak shaft and all half bearing..
Hi Kim,
Unfortunately we do not have a suitable crankshaft available at the moment. I could see if I could source one for you, you would be looking at around £300 for the crankshaft, and, if I can get one at standard size the bearings would be £82.80 for the mains and £75.60 for the big ends.
All the best,
Sue

I just wonder it’s possible riplace 2003 Land Rover freelander with different engine.?
Hi Zdenko,
It is possible to change the KV6 engine with another Freelander engine although it is much more complex than just changing the engine as you will also need to change the ECU, wiring loom etc. and if you change it to diesel you would also need to change all the fuel lines. It is not an easy or cheap task you would need a whole donor vehicle and not just a replacement engine.

Sue

Hello!
I’m having the following OBDII codes appear continously: P0301, P0303 and P0305 from bank 1 on my 2.5 V6 engine. 2005 Freelander. When I clear the codes with the scanner the car runs perfect… shortly after the codes reappear in 10min or so and the car runs like an old goat! Any ideas or suggestions I should look at to fix this problem? Is it vacuum or wiring? I can’t seem to find the the cause of this problem. Your help really appreciated!
Hi Brian,
The things to check are the coils, spark plugs, wiring, the O2 sensor and the injectors for that bank.
All the best,
Sue

I will thank u
hello again the codes that are being read are misfire cylinder 2 misfire cylinder 4 misfire cylinder 6 and multi misfire
Hi Lindsey,
Ask them to check the wiring and connections from the coils going backwards. It be that a wire has been nipped or a short circuit has occurred.

hello againafter last time we communicated the truck started running well put in you reservoir cap that helped out original parts so it doesn’t leak antifreeze anymore so thank you for that but now I have a different issue I was driving down the road and the truck completely died and didn’t want to turn on after turning overthought it was fuel pump but found blown fuse is for engine management system took it to the shop they replaced uses got it running but only 3 cylinders were working with for number 2thought it was fuel pump but found blown fuse is for engine management system took it to the shop they replaced uses got it running but only 3 cylinders were working with for number 2,4 and 6.I replaced all ignition coils and spark plugs but it did not work I even got a new ECM computer installed it but that didn’t work either the truck didn’t turn on so we put the old one back on and it still did the same only 3 cylinders my garage people are saying that they need to flash the computer reprogram it and the only place that could do it as a dealer can you please help me out since last time your recommendations were the right choice thank you again
Hi Lindsey,
Does your garage have a diagnostic machine which can read the trouble codes? If so, get them to read the codes then let us know what they are and we should be able to help you from there.

Sue

Hello again ..
Sent the truck back to the shop after following your suggestions..they had to order some parts from the landrover dealership. They had replaced some t fittings and elbows that were originally plastic so they replaced them with metal ones that may be smaller and restricting flow. My question is will that cause a problem changing the fittings and also will over tightening the reservoir cap cause any problems bc it seems like when the cap is to tight is when the steam comes out and when I dont tighten it too tight I dont see any steam? What is an evap leak that keeps my engine light on bc I replaced the cap 2x already? Thanks again..hope to hear ur input back soon:)
Hi Lindsey,
If they have replaced original parts with smaller metal hoses then it could have restricted the flow of coolant enough to cause you a problem.
The reservoir cap it there to hold in the pressure. If your Freelander overheats and pressure is released from the cap then the ability of the cap to hold in the pressure has been compromised and it should be changed – this is better than the system blowing at any other point. The old style caps do get tightened and should be fully tightened, however the new style reservoir and cap just clicks when it is on fully, so there is no over / under tightening issue. You possibly do not see the steam the same when you do not fully tighten it because the system is not fully pressurised.
Did the garage check the thermostat was performing correctly? Is the bottom radiator hose getting hot? Are you getting heating in the Freelander from the heater?
All the best,
Sue

Thank u for ur fast replys.I will do the flush and replace the antifreeze with the one u said and get back to u.thank u again
Yes u r right. Its actually boiling over.and when its cold out I can see steam coming out of the hood and when I look its pouring out the cap and boiling in the reservoir which is new.had to replace an intake gasket that went.im stuck.and they used the universal antifreeze
Hi Lindsey,
Oh dear, you need to flush out the universal antifreeze. If you can get a flush like Forte that is very good for clearing blockages too. While flushing make sure the water is circulating through the whole cooling system, paying particular attention to the oil coolers. Replace the coolant with red coolant with OAT (Organic Acid Technology). Replace your reservoir cap for a genuine Land Rover one and make sure the system is thoroughly bled. Check that the bottom radiator hose is getting hot, that the thermostat is opening up and the fans are kicking in before trying to drive it anywhere.
Hopefully when you have had all this done it may sort out the problem. If not, let us know the results and what is happening and we will advise where to go from there.

Sue

also how much would it be for an engine straight to my door
I recently did the head gaskets on my Freelander and pressure is building up in the reservoir tank and blowing the antifreeze out what is the problem and what should I do about it this. Did they not line up the sleeves on the cylinder s right or is the wrong anti freeze in it.what should I do . Rochester, new york
Hi Lindsey,
I assume your Freelander is the 2.5 V6 Petrol model.
If it is building up pressure in the reservoir tank you have an airlock; are drawing air into the system; have a blockage somewhere in the cooling system or the thermostat is not opening.
Make sure the cooling system has been bled completely. Check if the bottom radiator hose is getting warm.
Have you been using red coolant? If you have green, blue or plain water in the system flush it out and replace with red coolant.
Check for hairline cracks around the neck of the reservoir bottle and if they exist replace the reservoir – this could be where it is drawing in air. Replace the cap regardless, as its ability to hold pressure will have been compromised already. With the reservoir and cap only use genuine Land Rover parts, the aftermarket parts are not very reliable.
Check for blockages in the two oil coolers, the pipework goes very small here and hence they are prone to blockages. Make sure the coolant is flowing all the way around the system.
Check the thermostat is operating correctly.
Our reconditioned V6 engines are £1,945 including non-return surcharge. Shipping by courier to your door is £700 or by airfreight to the airport is £530.

I am in the US, Los Angeles to be exact and I am interested in purchasing one of your reconditioned KV6 2.5 engines. I have a few questions since this is a mqjor purchase from across the pond so to speak. First off, I would like ro request a quote for an engine w/o an exchange plus shipping. Then there’s the question of warranties and how they will be honored just in case. Also too, what if any was done to address the problems that these engines are prone to such as the sleeves slipping and head gasket. Perhaps you can describe the process as best as you can without all the details since I am familiar with the issues and an idea of what the remedies should be but no one seems to want to tackle these engines at least here in Los Angeles. Last but not least, have you shipped similar engines to the US and if at all possible perhaps a verified purchaser I can talk or correspond with to discuss his/her experience with these remanufactured engines and maybe even issues to look after with regards to customs requirements/fees, etc. Thank you in advance for your anticipated response.
Hello Henry,
Thank you for your enquiry and my apologies for the delay in responding.
A 2.5 V6 engine for your Freelander without an exchange engine is £1,995. Shipping to Los Angeles is £279 by sea to the Port; £409 by air to the Airport or £756 by air to your door.
The problem these engines have is more to do with the thermostat than the sleeves slipping or the head gasket being an issue (those problems are issues with the 1.8 Freelander). What tends to happen with the V6 Freelander is the thermostat housing cracks, as it a plastic housing which sits in the hottest part, the V of the engine. When this cracks if it is not noticed that coolant is leaking then it blows the head gaskets. We have found an extremely good solution to this in the form of a metal thermostat housing and pipes. We can fit this to the engine for an additional £245.83.
Yes, we have shipped these engines to the US before. I will email a couple of our past customers and ask if they are happy to be contacted.
With regard to the warranty, we have never had a warranty issue when shipping to the US (we do everything we can to avoid this!). If, however, you do have an issue we will first work with you / your garage to determine the issue (video comes in useful here) and will determine the best way of rectifying an issue with all concerned, i.e. repair in the US or return to us for repair / replacement engine.
All the best,
Sue

Sue,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I do have a question regarding your response and that which is stated about reconditioned engine. This page describes what comes with the reconditioned engine and it mentions all that’s done to it to make it worry free including that of a new thermostat.
Having read that your response above you had mentioned that a metal thermostat that’s supposedly addresses that cracking the plagues the plastic one, can be had and installed for an additional 200+GBP. My question is if the metal thermostat is in addition to the price of the reconditioned engine, then what type thermostat comes free with the reconditioned engine mentioned hereinabove? And how does the free thermostat included with the engine address the problem of the KV6 regarding thermostat to begin even if you recondition the engine if its not the metal one.
Hi Henry,
The original, and normal thermostat for the Freelander V6 engine is in a plastic housing with two plastic connecting pipes, and this is what comes with a standard reconditioned engine. The issue with the plastic thermostat tends to be the biggest problem in particularly hot countries or when somebody does not notice a water loss issue. The reason we do not supply the metal thermostats as standard with the engines is because it is an expensive item and we cannot get enough of them to satisfy all of the demand for these engines, hence we offer it as an option. As far as we are aware we are the only Freelander V6 rebuilders who offer this option.

Hi there.
I live in Sweden and I´ve had the unfortune of getting the plastic cam-wheel broken on my v6 from 2002 and as a result the timing belt got off and what happend to the valves probably isn´t pretty. The cost of getting my car in driveable condition is higher than it´s value if I include shopcosts up until now. So my question is this; do you buy cars which in this case, have a nearly flawless, completly rustfree body but an engine with a possible future as spareparts?
Tommy
Hi Tommy,
Sorry to hear you have had such a big problem with your Freelander.
Yes, sometimes we will buy Freelanders which have problems, however in this case we would have the same issue which you have in that the shipping costs will make is unviable, as we would need to get it from Sweden to the UK.
There may be some parts we could be willing to purchase from you which we could transport easily. Whereabouts in Sweden are you as we may be passing through there in October?

Sue

I am from us i have 2.5 freelander engine i replace the crankshaft do i have to to replace the main bearing cap bolts?
Hi Al,
It is recommended that you change the cap bolts, however it does not generally cause a problem to use the ones which you have.

HI
I’m very interested in buying a reconditioned 205 kv6 engine from you, could you please let me know how much it would cost to ship out to Toulouse in France.
Hi Benjamin,
Thank you for your enquiry.
I think I may have just spoken to you on the telephone, if so then this is just to confirm that the shipping price for a KV6 engine to Toulouse would be £200 by courier. The shipping time is 2 – 5 days.
All the best,
Sue

Thank you so very much!! 🙂
Hi Jean,
The crank shaft can be ground to 0.5. If it needed to be ground further then you could take it to 0.25. You will need to get the correct size main and big end bearings to compensate for the grinding.
All the best,
Sue
I´m sorry, can you clarify? If I can grind the crank shaft to 0.5, how come the limit is 0.25? In other words, Is there a supermeasure for the rod bushing in the market, to compensate the grinding?
Sorry for my poor english. Do you say lathe or turning of the crankshaft?
Can you tell me if I can have the crank of a KV6 in lathe to reduce up to 0.5? Or a new crank is the only solution?
Hi Jean,
Yes, you can grind the crank shaft to 0.5, the limit is 0.25.

Sue

Can any body tell me do landrover do a V6 freelander van 2003- ???
Hi Rob,
As far as I am aware the V6 was never produced as a commercial model, only the TD4 and 1.8 petrol where produced as commercials. It is possible to convert a 3 door V6 into a commercial model if you can get a commercial hardback.

I am from the US. Seems noone here wants to take on the challenge of rebuilding the 2.5 liter K series engines as they have so many problems. Is it possible to replace my 2.5L gas engine with a TD4 deisel engine. Will it mate with the tranny etc. I’ve heard they are much more reliable. But not available in the US.
Hi Rock,
It is possible to put a TD4 engine in a Freelander V6, although it is not as simple as just changing the engine. The ECU, black box, fuel lines / tank wtc. all need changing too. It is not something we have ever done, so unfortunately we are not in a position to advise you on the procedure – we can supply you with a reconditioned 2.5 KV6 engine if you change your mind! (or the TD4 one if you decide to go ahead).

Sue
