How to remove your Freelander 1 hard top:
1. Remove the covers from front of the roof bars
2. Remove the 4 bolts securing the roof bars and with assistance remove the bars.
3. Finally release and disengage the two front latches and unlock the two rear hinges to be able to remove the hard top.
NB. It is possible to remove the hard top without removing the roof bars, although this could be a difficult process and it’s recommended you have an assistant present.
Hi there,
I have recently bought a 2002 FL1 Hardtop that was converted to a commercial van by a Dutch company.
Now I would like to reconvert it to a normal passenger car, in order to use it as a convertible in summer.
The problem is that the two front latches can´t be released and disengaged anymore because the two red buttons have been removed during the conversion.
Do you have any idea what to do now?
Many thanks.
Hi Stefan,
My apologies for the delay in responding.
We are not sure how you can proceed with this, somehow you would need to reinstall the two red buttons – it should be possible to get these from a scrap vehicle at a dismantlers. If Nobert gets a chance to have a look at how this may be possible I will get back to you with any observations he has.
All the best,
Sue

Hi, i just saw your post. I am in the same situation, however the missing buttons was no issue. You just have to put a screwdriver in, at about 45 deg angle, with the handle to front, and press the red thing on the inside that remained after they cut down the buttons. The problem is, i guess the hardtop was attached with black silicone adhesive, and that’s why they took out the buttons. Have you managed to take the hard top down?
