What is included in your Timing Belt & Water Pump Replacement?
The timing belt (cam belt) controls the timing of your engine’s valves.
Your timing belt replacement includes the fitting of a full timing belt kit – the timing belt and tensioner.
Also included is the fitting of a new water pump.
Since we specialise in these engines who better to ensure that your timing belt is timed up perfectly? We have the specialist equipment and knowledge for the job.
Do I need a service?
If you are changing your timing belt at 72,000 miles then your vehicle will also be requiring its 72,000 mile service.
The Freelander 1.8 litre petrol should be serviced every 12,000 miles (20,000 km) or every 12 months, which ever comes sooner.
The service schedule involves an A service and a B service.
The 12,000 mile (20,000 km) or 12 month service is an A service.
The 24,000 mile (40,000 km) or 24 month service is a B service.
The A and B services then alternate for the life of your Freelander.
In addition to the standard A and B services there are a few other items which need replacing at fixed intervals, these are:
- the coolant requires replacing every 36,000 miles (60,000 km) or 36 months (3 years);
- the brake fluid requires replacing every 36,000 miles (60,000 km) or 36 months (3 years);
- the spark plugs require replacing every 72,000 miles (120,000 km) or 72 months (6 years);
- the cam / timing belt (with which we also change the water pump) requires replacement every 72,000 miles (120,000 km) or 72 months (6 years);
- the gearbox oil requires replacing every 96,000 miles (160,000 km) or 96 months (8 years);
- the Poly V ancillary driving belt requires replacement every 96,000 miles (160,000 km) or 96 months (8 years);
- the fuel filter requires replacing every 120,000 miles (200,000 km) or 120 months (10 years).

Where are you?
We are based in Norfolk, postcode IP26 4RH.
If you don’t have a lift home after dropping your car with us, and are looking to use public transport, we can drop you / pick you up at the railway station – our closest is Brandon, however if you are coming through London there is a direct train line from Downham Market which is not too far either. If Thetford is more convenient for you this is also possible.
We are rather in the middle of nowhere, but if you do need to wait for your car there are some pleasant walks in the area.
How long will it take?
To replace your timing belt & water pump generally takes less than 3 hours.
To complete a full 72,000 mile service will take approximately 4 to 5 hours, including the timing belt.
How can I pay for my timing belt replacement?
The painful bit I know! But we like to give you as much choice as possible, so we accept:
- Cash on collection (always nice!)
- All Major Credit Cards (including AMEX) – over the phone or on collection
- Direct Bank Transfer
- Paypal
- Cheques – provided they clear before delivery or collection
What if something goes wrong?
We don’t like things going wrong, and you certainly wouldn’t! Quality is important to us, but in the event that something does go wrong you have our
12 month, unlimited mileage warranty.
Our warranty covers you for parts and labour in the event of any failure of a component due to unforseen circumstances. Just bring your car back to us and we will sort it out.
A real shame that you’re so far away from me. I’m sure my cambelt may need changing.
Treat yourself to a day out Steve, in our beautiful Norfolk countryside :). We can lend you a car to explore whilst we give your Freelander some TLC.
All the best,
Sue
What a brilliant website. I’ve just bought my first Freelander, and have been poking around the internet looking for info.
You’re site has answered a lot of my questions about the Freelander already, and I’m sure I’ll be in touch again.
So glad I found you.
Hello Randell,
Congratulations on your purchase, I’m sure you are going to love your Freelander. Thank you for your kind words on our website.
All the best,
Sue
HI THERE MY 02 1.8 PETROL FREELANDER HAS JUST GONE THROUGH ITS MOT ON THE ADVISORY IT STATES FUEL TANK SUPPORT STRAPS VERY CORRODED BUT CANNOT SEEM TO SOURCE THEM CAN YOU HELP
Hi Gary,
These are a big problem. They are a discontinued part and there are, as yet, no aftermarket ones available that we know of. Generally people are having them fabricated individually, your local engineering shop may be able to help with that. Sorry we could not be of more help on this occasion.
All the best,

where do I find the fuse for petrol pump of freelander 1.8 petrol, 2001 model? If the car is cutting, can it be the problem of petrol pump or what? I have just serviced it.
Hi Mokoena,
There is a fuse and a relay for the fuel pump, both of which are in the engine compartment.
If your Freelander is cutting it could be due to the fuel pump, it could also be caused by the camshaft or crank shaft sensor. It would be worth putting it on diagnostics to determine the problem.
All the best,
Sue

Sue,
I’ve just taken ownership of a 2001(Y) Freelander 1.8 petrol with 56K on the clock. Just had a major service and MOT – no problems. The service booklet shows that the cam belt was last changed at 23K in late 2007. Would you recommend changing this now? If not, then when? Thank you.
Hi Matt,
Congratulations on your new acquisition, I’m sure it’s going to give you lots of enjoyment.
The cam belt change on the 1.8 Freelander should be every 72,000 miles or 6 years, whichever comes first. So the next cam belt change would be due at 95,000 miles or in late 2013.
All the best,
Sue
