Freelander IRD / Transfer Box
Planetary Shims
£25 for a pair
Free UK postage, £12 tracked and signed for postage for the rest of the World
These Freelander IRD / Transfer Box Planetary Shims are no. 8 in the exploded diagram of the IRD opposite. These are for a Frelander 1 (1998 – 2006).
The original shims for the Freelander IRD unit are not available so we have had these produced especially for us.
When an IRD fails these shims generally show wear and hence need replacing when reconditioning any unit.
The price for the planetary shims is per pair (i.e. the two shims required for one IRD unit).
These planetary shims are 0.5mm thick. Please check the thickness of your existing shims, if possible, to ensure these are the correct ones. The thickness of shim you require will depend on your IRD / Transfer Box. Generally the early IRD units used a 0.5mm thick shim – these are the ones which are most likely to be destroyed when an IRD has a problem. The later IRD units used a 1mm thick shim.
If you require 1mm thick shims please contact us on 0780 9575 421 for availability.
We do not have the shims labeled no. 5 in the exploded diagram as these do not generally cause a problem and can usually be reused.

Hello Ellie,
It sounds as though you are having terrible problems. Is it your gearbox or the IRD (transfer box) which is being destroyed? Which engine does your Freelander have? What mileage have you done? What is happening to the gearbox and the engine, what symptoms do you have? If you can give me some details we will help as much as we can.
All the best,
Sue

Does the ird supply power to both front wheels
Hi Jo,
Yes, the IRD does drive both the front wheels. It also transfers drive to the rear wheels.

Hi Jude,
This sounds as though you need to replace the clutch on your Freelander.

hello sue
All of a sudden in the past few weeks grinding noise from my landy , had wheel bearing checked all ok, had new VCU last year. do you think it could be the transfer box.
Rob
Hi Rob,
Can you tell where the grinding noise appears to be coming from, front, middle or rear of the Freelander?
Did you replace the VCU because of the mileage on your Freelander or were you getting some symtoms? If there were some symptoms of a problem beginning it is possible, even though you changed the VCU, for the problem to have become worse.
All the best,
Sue

if you remove the propshaft will the vcu and ird continue giving problems ? (freelander 2001)
Hi Thivanka,
If you remove the prop shaft the VCU will be removed with it, so this can no longer give problems. If your IRD is already damaged then, without the pressure of the prop shaft you may seem fine for some time but ultimately it will get worse. Hoever if the IRD is not damaged then you should not get any problems with your IRD unless you have problems with your drive shafts.
All the best,
Sue

Hi Sal,
I know it can be a problem with some Freelanders. Check the front footwells for dampness or signs of coolant residue. If your heater matrix is leaking then the carpets could be damp and hence you would get a lot of condensation. The other thing to check is the seals around your doors etc.
If none of these seem to be a problem I have heard that rubbing the inside of a potato on the windows can stop them from steaming up, never tried it myself!
All the best,
Sue

hi, how are you Sue, i have freelander, its diesel, td4, and i have a problem with the steaming inside, when its raining, there is plenty of steam on the windows and especially windscreen, thank you very much
Hi Alex,
We only do the large shims as the small ones do not normally cause a problem. Unfortunately the ring is part of the cooling plate and can not be bought separately.
If you would like the large shims just let me have your friends email address and I will send them a Paypal invoice, alternatively they can call me on 0780 9575 421 and pay by card.
All the best,
Sue

Can you sell me a complete set for reparing the transfer box?
I’m from Portugal and our company is Metal-conser.
Hi Helder,
The only shims we sell are the no. 8 shims, the larger ones. Generally the small shims do not give a problem.
When you ask for a complete set for repairing the transfer box are you meaning the shims, bearings, cooling plate, crown wheel and pinion, seals and O-rings? If so the prices are:
Bearing & seal kit (9 bearings/ 2 seals / 2 O-rings): £138
Cooling plate: £85
Crown wheel & pinion: £245
Large shims (2): £25

I am looking for a Freelander Transfer box 5 gear manual gear box 2003 Model.
Good Recon will do the job
Hi Zelda,
Thank you for your enquiry.
A reconditioned transfer box for your Freelander is £650 and a good used gearbox is £150. The transfer box is an exchange unit which requires the return of your damaged unit (your damaged unit is suitable as an exchange provided there are no holes or cracks in the casing). UK shipping for the transfer box and the gearbox is £50, which includes shipping both units to you and your damaged transfer box back to us. If you require shipping to a different country please let me know and I will get you a quote.
We accept payment by credit card (Tel: 0780 9575 421), by bank transfer or by Paypal.
All the best,
Sue

I read and found the answer for the differential which amazed me driving with fri=ont and rear tyres with different sizes causing differential problems. What a delicate SUV, or the vcu fluid have to be replaced every 70 thousand miles! I need a transfer box for my freelander 2.0 td built in 2000. Body number SALLNABBBYA566021 differential rubbers,
KHC500070, KHC500080, KHC500090
Rear differential LR006009
Transfer Box TAG9000230E
living in Rotterdam the Rotterdam dealer Breeland bringing from France icluding rear differential cost me 2.300 Euro? Does it worth ordering you? I took out the vehicle 3 days before towing on the motorway. They have not checked the rear differential! I changed the drive shaft berrings all. And the visco and the belt othe engine paid 3107 Euro! Do you think I could sell it when repaired 6000 Euro? Km 186.000

T.CAN
Hi Tunc,
Thank you for your enquiry. Unfortunately yes, the Freelander is very sensitive to tyres and VCU.
The prices for the parts you requested are:
KHC500070, KHC500080, KHC500090 £45 for the set
Rear differential LR006009, reconditioned £425 as an exchange unit
Transfer Box TAG9000230E, reconditioned £650 as an exchange unit
The shipping cost would be £190 in total which includes shipping all the items to you and shipping your damaged exchange items back to us.
The total would therefore be £1,310. All prices include VAT and parts are warrantied for 12 months.
We accept payment by credit card over the telephone (+44-780-9575-421), by bank transfer or by Paypal.
All the best,
Sue
