How can you tell if your Freelander IRD Unit / Transfer Box is damaged?
Generally the symptoms are that you will hear a clonking or grinding noise when you put your foot on, or take it off of the accelerator, or when you turn corners – particularly in reverse. You may find that you intermittently lose drive followed by a loud bang or grinding noise. Generally the root cause of this is the Viscous Coupling Unit (VCU) – if this is the case you will need to change your Viscous Coupling Unit (VCU) at the same time as your IRD Unit / Transfer Box.
If your Freelander feels tight, or the brakes seem to be binding, particularly in reverse, then this is a sign that you need to change your Viscous Coupling Unit (VCU) as soon as possible. There is a fluid in the Viscous Coupling Unit that has a life span of approximately 70,000 miles, this is a sealed unit so the only way to change it is to change the Viscous Coupling Unit (VCU) itself. If you do not change the unit then the viscous fluid becomes thick and causes the Viscous Coupling to become harder to rotate – once this happens you are risking damage not only to the Viscous Coupling Unit (VCU) but to the IRD Unit / Transfer Box and ultimately to the Gear Box.
All of our Freelander IRD units / transfer boxes require that you return your damaged unit to us or pay a £200 surcharge. The casing of your IRD unit / transfer box must not be damaged in order to be acceptable as a return unit.
Our Working Freelander IRD Unit / Transfer Box is a unit that has come off another Freelander and is known to be working. Supplied with a 30 day warranty*.
Our Reconditioned Freelander IRD Unit / Transfer Box is a unit that has been opened and all of the parts that show any sign of wear – usually the crown wheel and pinion, associated bearings and cooling plate – are replaced with new parts. Please ensure that the cause of the original failure has been diagnosed and corrected – this is often the viscous coupling unit (VCU), however it is also advisable to check the differential and the two front drive shafts. Also ensure that the reccommended amount of oil is put in your replacement IRD Unit / Transfer Box.

The Freelander 1 does have someform of holding back, but it should not feel like you have your breaks on. We would recommend checking your differential bushes. What are your tyres like? We strongly recommend that your tyres should be the same make, model, tread depth remaining and air pressure – taking particular note of the last two, as we have seen these cause extensive damage to a Freelander’s drive train.

I have a freelander 2004 2l td4. I have had new tyres on the car. When we brake at a low speed we get a noise from the front of the car. It’s not like a metal grinding noise but is only there when braking at low speed. Doesn’t do it at high speed only when slowing down to a full stop

Hi sue I have a 2010 freelander 2 theres a noise that sounds like there’s a wheel bearing away had all wheels checked not that so I put the car into land rover they said rear diff and ird so I had rear diff done at a cost of £1700 the noise is still there could the ird make this noise they quoted £2150 to replace ird any suggestions

If the noise appears to be coming from the front of the Freelander and it does not change when cornering, such as going round a roundabout, then it could be the power transfer unit (technically it is not an IRD, it is a transfer box) at the front of the Freelander. I have a 06 plate freelander td4 2..0 diesel
I bought it 2 months ago from a local dealer in fife, Scotland.
a week after buying I noticed a leak of oil underneath which a friend of mine said itd coming from the transfer box. I took back to the dealer who said it was only leaking due to 2 nylon seals on transfer box needing replaced. He duly replaced them but there was no talk of checking the vcu. Yesterday I started the motor and upon take off noticed a loud grinding as the wheels are turning and acceleration. I was hoping it may be a cv joint but I looked under this morning and there is a oil leak from the same area. I haven’t driven the car whilst like this as I am going In to the garage today. Does this sound like a new vcu and ird needed?
I bought this for £2495 from a garage that specializes in 4×4. Surely this should have been checked out.

What mileage has your Freelander done? If it is over 70,000 miles and the VCU has never been changed then it sounds very like this is your issue. What is happening is the VCU is putting strain along the drive train and it is breaking at the weakest link, in this instance the transfer box (IRD). Get them to drain some of the oil from the transfer box (IRD) and if there are bits of metal in there then this is your problem. You will need to have both the transfer box (IRD) and the VCU replaced otherwise the same thing will happen all over again in a short period of time (or it will affect some other part of the drive train). If you need a source for a reconditioned transfer box (IRD) and VCU we supply them – both come with a 12 month warranty.

Hi Sue, I have an 06 plate Freelander TD4, currently its in a garage and there struggling to find an answer to my problem. I recently had two tyres changed. and experienced vibration when putting the engine under load
I’ve also noticed that when turning corners im getting a bearing noise sound affect. Garage has changed left hand side CV gate. My TD4 has had 4 engines, its coming up to 200,000 on the clock. its passed its MOT.

It was good to talk to you on the telephone this morning. As I mentioned having the two new tyres put on the front is probably the cause of all your woes. Swap the tyres around then test if the VCU is getting hot. If it is you will have to change the other two tyres for the same make, type and size as your previous new ones. If major damage has occurred it is more likely to be to the rear differential than the IRD unit given the mismatch in tyres, but check both for play. If you remove the prop shaft there is a good chance you can drive the Freelander without causing any more damage. You are welcome to bring the Freelander up to us if you would like us to check it over.

We do not blank the IRD on our own vehicles, which means they are very easy to convert back to four wheel drive when you want to. We never have any problems with them.

You do risk doing more damage, possibly even cracking the iRD casing, if you continue to drive it. This would mean the casing would no longer be suitable as an exchange unit if you replace it with a reconditioned unit, so it would cost you more.

When the dealer fixed your Freelander for you last time I assume it was the IRD / transfer box they replaced (this is connected to the gearbox). Did they also replace the viscous coupling unit (VCU)? If you have travelled over 120,000 miles and have not replaced the VCU then this was probably the cause of your first break down when the dealer fixed the IRD / transfer box. If they did not change the VCU at the same time then you will damage the IRD / transfer box or the rear differential all over again. If you cannot get the VCU replaced immediately then remove the prop shaft and operate in front wheel drive until you can.

This sounds more like an issue with the clutch than with the IRD. Did you also change the master cylinder?
What mileage are you on? The VCU’s tend to last about 70,000 miles, after which they should be replaced to avoid damage to the drive train. The VCU would not generally make a noise, it would just make the Freelander feel tight, particularly on full lock.
The majority of the time the IRD is damaged due to the VCU being used beyond its useable life (70,000 miles). It can be damaged by a driveshaft or lower tie rod end, but it is more often than not the VCU. When the IRD is damaged you would generally get a bearing noise or a crack / bang when something breaks inside it. It is not generally associated with changing gear.

Hi Had four new tyres michelin latitude fitted ,so as not to have any isues with the vcu.after tyres were fitted was aware of steady wuring noise that has now got louder sounds its central to the freelander which has only done 55000 miles old tyres were syncrones all four .vcu bearings are new ,noise is there soon as you move off and stays about the same even when coasting in neutral with engine turned off.With car jacked up on one side, both wheels off the ground and in neutral when i turn either wheel drive transmits to other wheel on the jacked up side i,e both wheels turn. is this normal. With regard to the way your wheels are turning when jacked up on one side, this is normal.

My tyres are consumed, they are michelin syncrone 195/80r 15, have always been changed all four each 40000km (25000miles). When mount IRD and VCU put 4 new tyres!

A used IRD is fine if it was in working condition when it was removed from the vehicle. What you do not want is a used VCU as this is the cause of most of the problems that the Freelander drive train suffers from (completely avoidable if Land Rover had told people to replace them after 70,000 miles!)
The VCU with bearings is £340, there is no surcharge if you are returning your old VCU. The shipping cost is £95, which includes shipping the VCU to you in Italy and your return unit back to us in the UK. So the total will be £435. We can take payment by credit card over the telephone, bank transfer or Paypal.
With regard to your tyres, if you replaced all four at the same time then you should be fine. Once you have the new VCU fitted, take it for a drive and then feel the temperature of the VCU. You should be able to touch it and it just feels a little warm. If it is hot then you need to look at the ratios of your tyres and probably get them changed.

What mileage is your Freelander on? This type of damage is what would be expected from a VCU that has been operating beyond its useable life of approximately 70,000 miles (although we have seen them go sooner than this). One of the early signs of the VCU going are when you feel as though the Freelander is holding back on you when turning on full lock, particularly in reverse.
The cost of a reconditioned IRD unit is £650, and unfortunately since yours has damaged the casing there will be a surcharge of £200 since it is not suitable as an exchange unit. The shipping for this will be just £45 since we do not need to ship your old unit back. The cost of a reconditioned VCU is £275, it is advisable to also replace the VCU bearings as these can be difficult to remove from the old unit without damaging them. These are £65 for the pair and would come fitted to the VCU. The shipping for the VCU is £95 to Italy which includes shipping the reconditioned VCU from the UK to Italy and your old VCU back from Italy to the UK. The total for an IRD, VCU and bearings, including shipping, would therefore be £1330.
Once you have changed the VCU you should not have any further issues with the IRD and will be good for another approximately 70,000 miles.
Both our VCU and IRD come with a 12 month return to base warranty.
One other thing to check with your Freelander is the tyres. If your tyres have different ratios this can cause issues with the drive train. With a Freelander you should always change all four tyres at the same time with the same make and specification.

Dear sue ,I purchased a freelander 1 11 months ago from a dealer ,and was satisfied with it unit last December during the snow when I foolishly assumed that my newly acquired 4×4 would easily pull me through 12 inches of snow but not the case! At the time I blamed it on tyres and shortly after changed the tyres. Soon after this a clunking noise developed on acceleration and deceleration and this noise is still there to this day. Last week I had a tow bar fitted and was told by the mechanic I had no prop shaft fitted obviously removed by the previous owner or the dealer I bought the car from. I then took the car back to the dealer and asked if he could offer any explanation for this. He informed me he was totally unaware of this but was prepared to have another prop-shaft fitted and if necessary differential which he is going to have removed from another freelander, am I likely to have any problems with this and if so what would they be?

What you need to find out is why the prop shaft was removed. Normally this is because there is an issue with the drive train, generally caused by the VCU (viscous coupling unit). Was the cluncking noise in the front or the rear of the vehicle? If it was from the front it is liable to be a problem with your IRD / transfer box – no problem if he replaces this with a working unit from another vehicle. If it was from the rear, then it is liable to be your rear differencial, again, no problem replacing this with a working unit. Your big issue is, when he puts a prop shaft on you DO NOT want the VCU to be a used unit. The VCU’s need replacing about every 70,000 miles and if it is replaced by a used unit you will not know the mileage of the unit and hence not know when to replace it again, and could end up doing damage to the IRD and the rear differential once more. Insist on a reconditioned or new VCU, the rest he can take as good used units. This way you shouldn’t have any problems.
