I live in Ghana and owns a freelander one .I naught it when the original engine has been changed why is the best alternative diesel engine to use .currently it is the CD 20 Nissan premera
Hi Jerry,
Which engine did your Freelander have originally, the 2.0 litre Rover L-Series or the 2.0 litre BMW TD4? Why was the engine changed to the Nissan Primera?
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sue.
I’m currently looking at a used l-series freelander 1 with a dead engine. Its in an excellent shape over all except for the engine of course. I’m making an offer on it and if it comes cheap enough will be repairing it to bring her bac on the road. Question is, which is the best manual you would reccomend for helping in the engine rebuilt? Would like to do it myself as a project with my brother and son.
Thank you.
Hi Charlot,
The Haynes manual will cover most of it; the other alternative is the RAVE manual.
All the best,
Sue
Hi I have a td4 and just got the block resleeved to Std . I have had the checked and everything main bearing and big end is still Std.
What would the cost of a complete gasket set and new bears be . Thanks
Hi Riaan,
Thank you for your enquiry, I have sent a quotation to your email address. You will need to check how many holes your current head gasket has to ensure we supply the correct head gasket (the prices vary slightly but not significantly).

Hi sue be blessed.i am having hell of worries withmy freelander l series.had the engine timing checked.got the disel pump done as new.now after no more white smoke motor starts at half stroke ok. Now engine checklight is not going off. Check says airflow faulty injector with fly faulty.ypu know when changed rings and renewd engine had the cylinder polished and mechanic told we need not change the sleeves.was he not wrong ? Cause wr can see oil leaks thru breather going thru hose and airflow.should we not refit new sleeves and renew engine again.in my country the car is actually worth about only 3000_3500pounds resale value.i have recently spent nearly 2000pounds .headache persists. Can u advise what should i do.how much would it cost for posting the proper sleeves to me with all othet accessories if not another reconditioned engine.to Mauritius.thank you for all
Hi Kishore,
It is very unusual for an L-series to have an issue with the sleeves, so it is unlikely this is the problem.
What you are describing sounds like a multipoint injection manifold pressure sensor issue, which is mounted on the bulkhead with a small pipe going to the turbo. We would need your chassis number to determine the correct one for your Freelander. Alternatively it could be the injector on cylinder number one, did you change this one?
All the best,
Sue

Hi sue.thanks for your reply.please note the chassis num. SALLNABB7WA617785.
Both of your suggestions, are exact,we got it when we checked thru the computer diagnosis.faults were signalled as follows,.
ECU has logged engine speed needle lift sensor fault ,fault code stored when: 1)Break or short on line, plug connection or at needle leaf sensor
2) crank sensor signal indicates a different engine speed.
Code 2:
Air intake flow meter.fault code stored when air flow has open or short circuit or engine is above idle and the air flow reading is not plausible.
In my case why is there oil going thru hose or pipe thru breather and air flow meter and to turbo charger after engine has been renewed with new rings and bearings etc.,.i changed the 3 injectors not the one with the electric cable.is this the number one you mean? Thanks
Kimd regards
Hi Kishore,
If you have oil running through the hoses then it sounds like your turbo seals are leaking. Yes, injector number one is the one with the electric cable.

Sue

Dear Freelander specialist, whilst service my freelander td4 2005, when taking off the air manifold I dropped a orange rubber washer with the metal ring into one of the air vents which I believe may be the engine? It was my first time due to shortage of cash. I have not started the car yet. Is it safe to start? I cannot take the washer out as its gone all the way in. Have I damaged my engine and will I need a new engine?’please advise I am very sad. Kindest regards, Rahim.
Dear Rahim,
It will have called into the valve inlets. DO NOT start your Freelander as it could cause damage to the valve and piston. You should be able to retrieve the parts with the help of a flexi magnet.

While changing battery, the positive was connected with the negative side,by mistake on checking the fuse box,one 5 amp fuse was blown. The horn blasted, there is 12 volt on the starter, but the engine would not crank. the air condition is not working. Please advice me the service dealer is 2300 miles away.
Hi Roger,
It may be that you have spiked the ECU or the immobiliser. Is the central locking working to lock and unlock the Freelander? When locked is the immobiliser red light showing on the dash board? Does this go out when you unlock and try to start it?
As a bit of a grasp in the dark just check the small wire going into the starter motor is secure (wriggle it about a bit and see if that enables it to start).

Hi, is the l series engine in the freelander the same as used in the mgzr.? What i would like to know is would a freelander 2 wheel drive gearbox bolt onto the engine out of a 2.0 tdi mgzr. It is for a project i am doing and seem to be going round in circles! Thanks for any help.
Hi Adrian,
Yes, you can get the MG ZR with the same L-series engine as the Freelander. There is, however, no two wheel drive Freelander 1, so all L-series Freelanders were built as four wheel drive, if they have been converted to two wheel drive this just means they have had the IRD / transfer box blanked, not removed. So all Freelander gearboxes are designed to connect to the IRD / transfer box, and hence would not be suitable for your MG ZR I’m afraid.

Hi i have a 1999 2l diesel freelander and just has the brakes replaced and the brake pedal is very hard and is not very effective. What could be the cause? Thanks.
Hi Nath,
This sounds as though you either have a problem with your brake servo or your brakes need bleeding.

Sue,
GoodMorning.
I have a 2000 freelander, 2.0 tdi engine.
I would like to know if a TD4 Engine Could be used as replacement engine to the Tdi.
Any special challenge ?
Reagrds.
Hi Fechio,
This would be a major challenge. The TD4 engine and the L-series are very different. You would need to change the engine, the wiring loom, the ecu etc. etc. The gearbox is also a little different on the TD4 than the L-series, so this would also need to be dealt with. We have changed the 1.8 petrol into a TD4 before, but it is a very major job and requires a donor TD4 vehicle, not just the engine.

Sue

1998 L series Diesel. is it possiable to fit cylinder sleeve’s to this engine and rebore them to standard? would TD5 sleeves fit? and where can they be bought?
Regards.
Donald.
Hi Donald,
My apologies for the delay in responding.
Yes, it is possible to fit a cylinder sleeve and rebore it to standard for this engine, it would not be a cheap job, approximately £140 + VAT per bore, including the cylinder sleeve. Until the engine has been bored you would not know what size liners to purchase.

Hi can you help, I am in Spain and have a question you may be able to help me with ?, on my Freelander year 2000, L series TD diesel, I have a black wire not connected,it has a spade connector on the end, It comes out of the loom on the top of the engine next to where the two wires go to the engine temp sender, the one just behind the alternator, someone did a repair to the car and since then the temperature gauge does not work, when i take this black wire and touch it to earth, the gauge goes to hot, I would appreciate your help I have asked so many forums etc with no joy.
Hi Peter,
The wire from the loom (a green wire) should connect together with your loose black wire.

Sue

Hi Sue. I bought a 1.8 litre petrol Landrover freelander 1999 model in Ghana which came from the UK they did a conversion to left hand srive and the car is constantly overheating, I replaced the water pump but it still overheats and bursts the radiator pipes. So build up of pressure in the cooling system. I replaced the head gasket to only get 30km down the road and yes as guessed it overheated again. I wanted to know what other engine can fit something preferably deisel or slightly more powerful will this be possible and could it be the engine at fault or the cooling System. When the car overheats the temperature climbs pretty fast. How much would it cost to get a engine to Ghana the better one that is if possible, could we get a radiator as well for it?
Regards, Desmond
Hi Desmond,
It is a major job to try to change the engine for a different type, particularly if you are changing to a diesel engine as you will need to change the ECU, wiring loom, fuel tank and pipes etc. as well as the engine. The deisel engine that would fit would be the Rover L-series engine which we can sell as a reconditioned engine for £1,695.
There are a couple of relatively cheap things you can try to cure your problem with the current engine. The first is to change the water reservoir tank and cap – these can cause major problems in the Freelanders, especially once they develop major cracks around the neck. It would also be worth changing your thermostat.
If you still have problems you could try the trick of taking the inlet manifold, and where the small pipe goes into it pop out the ball bearing that sits inside this – this has been found to help in hot countries.
If we can be of any further help please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sue

Hi Sue,
I currently own a 2.0 freelander TDi Sport (05 plate). Great car to drive, thou I am now having problems.
The first is that it seems to drink engine coolant (Possibly Head Gasket Problem), the second is the heater seems to be bit temperamental, not producing heat. I had the radiator replaced just over a year ago – the a/c also has a mind of its own and the umph has gone from the turbo. I would be grateful if you could advise or help in anyway ?? Not keen on selling it thou not sure if it needs a new engine
Hi Stuart,
It sounds as though your heater matrix may be leaking. Do you get any dampness in either of your footwells?
With regard to the lack of umph, does the Freelander smoke at all or is it using oil? Check if the turbo is sucking air or blowing air. If it is sucking air the turbo may need replacing.
All the best,
Sue
Hi There
I had a 1999 landrover freelander, 2.0L diesel. Actually my interest is to get a reconditioned engine that has to be shipped to Johannesburg South Africa. How much would it cost including shipping charges
Thank you
Hi Gideon,
The shipping price by sea for a reconditioned 2.0 L engine is £380, and by air (5 to 7 days shipping time) is £1140. It would, therefore, not be worth shipping your old engine back to us, as it is cheaper to pay the surcharge.
The total cost would be:
BY SEA:
Reconditioned 2.0 L diesel engine: £1273
Non-return surcharge: £300
Shipping: £380
TOTAL: £1953
BY AIR:
Reconditioned 2.0 L diesel engine: £1273
Non-return surcharge: £300
Shipping: £1140
TOTAL: £2713
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sharbel,
The warranty covers all parts and labour. If we have done the fitting it will include the labour of taking the engine out and putting it back in. However the warranty is a return to base warranty and as such, when you have just purchased the engine, it will include the replacement engine and not the labour or shipping costs.
I hope this clarifies the position for you.
All the best,
Sue
Sue
Thanks
I do not think that the turbo is damaged. Just filled up with lubricant from the engine. Concerning the engine will the 1 year unlimited mileage guarantee also include the cost of removing the failed engine, shipping it to you, receiving it back and re-installation costs or just the replacement with a new one?
That is a cost of at least £1200 for removal, shipping to and from your factory and installation. Please clarify this to me as your international customers should be aware of what your guarantee covers and what it does not.
I have a 1999 Freelander 1994 cm3 diesel engine, manual transmission too.
Engine shot as well as you must have guessed! Coolant in engine – problem.Turbo full of oil.
Land rover’s solution? We can not do anything about turbo diesel engines so get another car or find a used second hand engine engine!
I found an engine but I do not know the quality, how many thousands of kilometres run etc.
But I want my Free Lander back on the road. Can you ship to Cyprus and how much will it cost me to get it here?
Dear Sharbel,
We can certainly supply you with an engine and recondition it for you. The cost for a reconditioned engine when you are not returning your old engine is £1795. The shipping cost to Cyprus is £372 – so you are right, it is not worth returning your damaged engine, it is cheaper to pay the non-return surcharge of £300 (which is included in the £1795). Hence the total cost would be £2167 including VAT.
Please note this does not include the turbo. If you need a reconditioned turbo this would be £442 including VAT if we recondition your damaged turbo. If you cannot return your damaged turbo we would need to source a turbo suitable for reconditioning or a used working turbo. The turbo could be shipped with the engine at no additional cost.
All the best,
Sue

I have a 2004 Freelander 2.5 Petrol USA (mint condition garage kept).
Engine shot! Coolant in engine – problem.
Land rover’s solution? get another car or engine!
Do not want same engine!
Would like to put diesel engine, turbo diesel?
Is this a possibility? Then would ship car to portugal.
Hi Frank,
It is a possibility but there are a lot of other parts that need to be changed too, such as the radiator, the wiring loom, the ECU the fuel pipes etc. All of this would probably cost more than the car is worth and many times more than just replacing it with another 2.5 V6 engine.
All the best,
Sue
