Our Freelander 2.5 K V6 Petrol timing belt & water pump replacement is just
£795 incl. VAT
Get your timing belt replaced in a timely manner – Land Rover’s recommendation is every 72,000 miles.
What is included in your Timing Belt Replacement?
The timing belt (cam belt) controls the timing of your engine’s valves.
Your timing belt replacement includes the fitting of a full timing belt kit – all three timing belts, tensioner and idler.
Also included is the fitting of a new water pump.
Since we specialise in these engines who better to ensure that your timing belt is timed up perfectly? We have the specialist equipment and knowledge for the job.
Do I need a service?
If you are changing your timing belt at 72,000 miles then your vehicle will also be requiring its 72,000 mile service.
The Freelander 2.5 V6 litre petrol should be serviced every 12,000 miles (20,000 km) or every 12 months, which ever comes sooner.
The service schedule involves an A service and a B service.
The 12,000 mile (20,000 km) or 12 month service is an A service.
The 24,000 mile (40,000 km) or 24 month service is a B service.
The A and B services then alternate for the life of your Freelander.
In addition to the standard A and B services there are a few other items which need replacing at fixed intervals, these are:
- the coolant requires replacing every 36,000 miles (60,000 km) or 36 months (3 years);
- the brake fluid requires replacing every 36,000 miles (60,000 km) or 36 months (3 years);
- the spark plugs require replacing every 60,000 miles (100,000 km) or 60 months (5 years);
- the gearbox oil requires replacing every 60,000 miles (100,000 km) or 60 months (5 years);
- the cam / timing belt (with which we also change the water pump) requires replacement every 72,000 miles (120,000 km) or 72 months (6 years);
- the Poly V ancillary driving belt requires replacement every 96,000 miles (160,000 km) or 96 months (8 years);
- the fuel filter requires replacing every 120,000 miles (200,000 km) or 120 months (10 years).

Although not specified on any Land Rover service schedule, you also need to replace your viscous coupling unit approximately every 70,000 miles to avoid damage to the rest of your drive train.
Where are you?
We are based in Norfolk, postcode IP26 4RH.
If you don’t have a lift home after dropping your car with us, and are looking to use public transport, we can drop you / pick you up at the railway station – our closest is Brandon, however if you are coming through London there is a direct train line from Downham Market which is not too far either. If Thetford is more convenient for you this is also possible.
We are rather in the middle of nowhere, but if you do need to wait for your car there are some pleasant walks in the area.
How long will it take?
To replace your timing belt & water pump generally takes less than 5 hours.
To complete a full 72,000 mile service will take approximately 8 to 9 hours, including the timing belt.
How can I pay for my timing belt & water pump replacement?
The painful bit I know! But we like to give you as much choice as possible, so we accept:
- Cash on collection (always nice!)
- All Major Credit Cards (including AMEX) – over the phone or on collection
- Direct Bank Transfer
- Paypal
- Cheques – provided they clear before delivery or collection
What if something goes wrong?
We don’t like things going wrong, and you certainly wouldn’t! Quality is important to us, but in the event that something does go wrong you have our
12 month, unlimited mileage warranty.
Our warranty covers you for parts and labour in the event of any failure of a component due to unforseen circumstances. Just bring your car back to us and we will sort it out.
hi sue ihave freelander v6 2003 petrol engin i was change timing belt and gasket nice ly but my car didnt give start is there any idia plz thanks in add
Hi Lili,
The first thing to do is make sure you have reconnected all the wiring and the sensors. If everything is connected then check the timing.
Is the Freelander trying to start? If you cannot find the cause perhaps you could send us a video of what it is doing so we can help further – send to sue@freelanderspecialist.com.
All the best,
Sue

Hi Andy,
The air filter is under the top cover. Remove the cover the turn it upside down, you will find it there.

Hi Andy,
We can supply a timing belt kit if required, £218.31 for the three belts, idler, tensioner and water pump, including VAT.
No, the metal thermostat kit does not include the manifold gaskets, it includes the thermostat and housing, the two pipes which come off of the thermostat and the clips.
Shipping for the thermostat and the timing belt kit would be £15 including VAT by courier.
You can order by telephone on 0780 9575 421, we can take a card payment over the phone, or I can send you a Paypal invoice if you let me know what you would like.
All the best,
Sue

I have bought a 2001 Freelander V6 with just over 50,000miles. I have just had it Terracleaned and noticed the radiator expansion bottle making a bubbling noise. Upon further checking the bottom radiator hose was cold but the top hose was red hot, which suggests the thermostat isn’t working.
I have noticed some dark fine particles in the water in the expansion tank which suggests some radiator leak plugging material (Radweld) may have been used in the past. Any further thoughts? I hope that it wasn’t anything else, as there is no yellow blancmange under the oil filler cap.
I note that the mileage limit for the timing belt is 72k, now is there also an age limit the belt will last for, given mine is 14yrs old and has done just over 50k.
Thanks
Andy
Hi Andy,
Congratulations on your purchase, the V6’s are Nobert’s favorite Freelander, they always put a smile on his face.
The cambelt change on the V6 Freelanders should be done every 72,000 miles or 6 years, whichever comes soonest – so it is long overdue I’m afraid.
These engines HATE solutions such as radweld or K-seal, and your problem may not be the thermostat but a blockage in the system caused by the solution used. Empty the cooling system out, flush it with a very good coolant flush, such as a Forte. Make sure everything is circulating, particularly around the oil coolers where the pipes get very small and are most prone to blockages. Replace the coolant, making sure you use red coolant and not green or blue.
If your expansion bottle has any hairline cracks around the neck then replace this and the cap for genuine Land Rover parts (the aftermarkets for these are not great). If the expansion tank does not have hairline cracks but steam has escaped from the cap when it has boiled then just replace the cap, again for a genuine Land Rover one.
It would certainly be worth changing the thermostat and its associated pipes at the same time as the solution used could very well have affected this (we do have metal thermostat kits which solve the problem of the thermostat housing cracking due to being in the hottest part of the engine – not cheap (£295), but very effective).

Sue

Sue,
Where is the best point to drain the coolant from?
Thx
Andy
Hi Andy,
Remove the bottom radiator hose, then remove the 13mm bolt on the engine block behind the front exhaust manifold.
All the best,
Sue
Thanks Sue for your response. I have bought a 400ml bottle of Forte and new Red Summer Coolant/ Antifreeze. The forte bottle recommends diluting 20% by volume. From the handbook which states the volume of the coolant system is 7.8 litres. So 20% by volume is 1.56litres. With only 1nr 400ml bottle of Forte is this going to be enough to flush the whole coolant system? Not had to flush a coolant system for a long time, so to get this right.
Hi Andy,
Do not worry about the quantities the bottle says. Mix with water and put in the cooling system, one bottle will be enough, but fill the coolant system up.
All the best,
Sue

Hi and thanks Sue for your quick reply. Where is the best place to buy timing belt kit from. I live in Cheshire (a little far from you). I guess i will need it doing sooner the better.
How can i order the metal thermostat kit from you (i will return the bits i ordered from Rimmer Bros). Do i need to keep the manifold gaskets or does your kit include these?
Andy
if belt snaps dose it most like too do damage too engine
Hi Ken,
Yes, if the cam belt snaps it generally does quite a lot of damage to the engine too, and can mean you need to replace the whole engine.

i was told by a dealer rep. that many times after the timing belts are replaced that they are so tight that they sheer off the cam shaft,then needing a new engine.i have a 2002 freelander with 75k.I would like to know if this is true before spending the money and getting into something i cant afford.thank you in advance
Hi Jesse,
We have never come across this problem. The tightness of the belt is set by the person who does the timing when changing the cam belt. There is a tensioner for adjusting the tension. If the person sets this too tight then you could have problems.
It is always advisable to change the water pump at the same time as the cam belt.
All the best,
Sue
