Is Your Diesel Freelander losing water or overheating?
Do you want your beloved Freelander back on the road and running cool again?
We Can Help!
If you are losing water or your engine is overheating, don’t continue to drive your car otherwise you could do extensive damage to the engine.
Our Freelander Diesel head gasket replacement starts at just £895.
What are the symptoms of a Head Gasket problem?
Common symptoms of head gasket failure are:
- Engine overheating
- Excessive coolant loss
- Coolant in the oil (this looks like a milky sludge on the dipstick, or oil filler cap)
- Oil in the coolant (this also looks like a milky sludge, but in the expansion tank)
- Engine misfire, excessive white smoke from the exhaust, or hard/ non start.

Which Head Gasket Replacement should I have?
Which head gasket replacement you go for very much depends on what has happened to your vehicle.
If your Freelander has not overheated and you are looking to change the head gasket as a precautionary measure then you will only need the standard head gasket replacement.
If your Freelander has severely overheated then it is recommended you use the deluxe head gasket replacement as this addresses all the parts of the cooling system that could have caused the problem or could have been affected by the overheating.
PLEASE NOTE: If your engine has excessively overheated, it may have caused further damage which the standard head gasket replacement may not repair.
To discuss your particular situation please call us on

and we will be happy to advise you.
Can you change the cam belt at the same time?
Your cam belt on the Freelander 2.0 L-series diesel should be changed every 48,000 miles. If your vehicle is close to this mileage it will be cost effective to have the cam belt changed at the same time as the head gasket is done.
A cam belt change when done with the head gasket is only £195 (normal price £495) – this includes both belts.
The Freelander TD4 has a timing chain, so there is not cam belt to change.
What if my Freelander is not drivable?
If your Freelander does not drive and you need to get it to us to fix your head gasket why not try:
- Phoning your breakdown recovery service, if you have one. These will sometimes transport your car for free, or at a reduced rate.
- Giving us a call on 0780 9575 421 and we will arrange to transport your car to us for a cost of £1.80 per mile (calculated one way only to IP26 4RH). We can collect from anywhere in Europe (ferry crossings will be charged additionally where applicable).
How long will it take?
To replace your head gasket takes about one week, this is due to the machining which is required.
If you need your Freelander back on the road quicker than this just give us a call on
0780 9575 421
and we will do our best to help.
How can I pay for my head gasket replacement?
The painful bit I know! But we like to give you as much choice as possible, so we accept:
- Cash on collection (always nice!)
- All Major Credit Cards (including AMEX) – over the phone or on collection
- Direct Bank Transfer
- Paypal
- Cheques – provided they clear before delivery or collection
What if something goes wrong?
We don’t like things going wrong, and you certainly wouldn’t! Quality is important to us, but in the event that something does go wrong you have our
12 month, unlimited mileage warranty.
Our warranty covers you for parts and labour in the event of any failure of a component due to unforseen circumstances. Just bring your car back to us and we will sort it out.
Hi Sue,
I’m hoping you can provide some advice as my mechanic is stumped as to what the problem could be with my Freelander 1 TD4 (2005);
The engine is constantly in the red as ‘overheated’ even on the very first start up of the day (literally within a couple of seconds of turning on the engine). I’ve had the temp sensor replaced and the engine ECU but it’s still happening every single time the engine is running… Something has recently caused a short in the circuit hence the ECU replacement which the mechanic thought was connected to the temp ‘overheat’ but the faulty wire has also now been replaced with no change to the car showing an engine overheat upon startup, even when the car has been sat unused for 2 days. Any ideas as to what else we need to check / replace?
Hi Stella,
My apologies for the delay in responding.
This is a new one to us!
Have you read the temperature on live data on a diagnostics? If this reads a normal temperature then the problem could be with the instrument cluster getting the wrong reading from the ECU. It could be a painstaking task of following the electrical diagram to see which wires communicate from the temperature sensor to the ECU and the temperature gauge.
What happens when you disconnect the temperature sensor?
All the best,
Sue

Hello
I picked up a 2004 Td4 (97400 miles on) last week from a S/H dealer and have only driven it home about 70 miles which it appeared to drive fine. I have done one drive locally of a round 20 miles and noticed the temp gauge was only sitting at around 1/3 not halfway. My concern is that I noticed a few air bubbles and some froth appearing in the expansion tank when the engine is idling. I bought the TD4 as I was aware of the petrol horror stories regarding HGF. There doesn’t appear to be any milkiness on the oil filler cap or dipstick so I have searched on the forums and seen reference to thermostat failure, Thermostat housing being cracked and possible leaking hose. Any advice with regards to where to start would be appreciated. I have it booked in on Thursday with a local garage I trust (i’m in Northumberland) for a coolant flush and oil change along with a change of anti roll bar linkage so before I waste any money I would like to nail down the possible issues first or at least have an idea of possible issue to go back to the garage with, thankfully I paid with a C/C so may have some recourse if necessary.
Regards
Hello Jason,
If the temperature gauge is only going up to the 1/3 mark then this is highly likely to be a thermostat issue, so it would be as well to change the thermostat. Given you have some air bubbles it could be worth having a coolant pressure test done on the system as well.
All the best,
Sue

Hi Sue
Thats great thanks for the swift reply I appreciate it. I have had it into the garage today and they are flushing out the coolant system replacing with new coolant replacing the expansion bottle and cap and changing the thermostat as for the pressure test they mentioned about that too!
Thanks again
Kind regards
Jason
Excellent Jason, hopefully that will sort it out.

Sue

Hi there
Are you able to explain the difference between the Freelander 1 and Freelander 2 diesel engines? There are 2006 Freelander 2s listed with 2.0L engines, but I thought all Freelander 2s had the newer 2.2?
Was there some type of transition or phase in period around 2006?
Are the 2006 Freelander 2s with the 2.0L diesel still as reliable as the other 2007 Freelander 2.2 diesels? I have read the Freelander 2 is a big improvement on reliability, but not sure about this particular model from 2006 which seems like it is in transition.
Any feedback would be great.
Thanks
I think my confusion has come from the way the Freelander 1 is listed in advertisements. It is shown as Freelander 2.0 which makes it look like a Freelander 2 but actually isn’t. Problem solved I think.
Hi Bill,
Yes, you have managed to solve the problem, the Freelander 2.0 is a Freelander 1 with a 2.0 engine. All the Freelander 2 diesel vehicles have the 2.2 engine.

Sue

hi, the feed pipe on my steering pump on my freelander L series seems to be leaking where it fixes to pump. Can this pipe be replaced without removing steering pump. thanks
Hi Steven,
Yes, it can be changed without removing the steering pump but it is very tight so it will be a difficult job.

I changed a reverse switch on Freelander 2.0 Diesel and after Amber light of HDC come ON but no gears activated what would be the problem?
Hi Wilberforce,
What year is your Freelander? Is it manual or auto? Do you mean you cannot get it into any gear?
All the best,
Sue

hello Sue, no gears are OK , just wondering why the Amber light in on it drives perfectly well , W reg 2000 ( Freelander 2.0 Manual ) what can I do the Amber light of HDC to get off or is there anything wrong?
yrs wilberforce
Hi Wilberforce,
Generally the HDC light comes on either because you have a faulty brake light switch or you have a loose or broken connection on the wires underneath the gear stick gaitor. Check these two places.

Hi, I have a R reg 2l diesel freelander (new to freelanders) first one. Mot advisory – near side outer front track rod end ball joint has slight play and oil leak. I have noticed Coolant is empty , power steering is past min, it’s a cold starter but after no problem starting .
It has 145,000 on clock, could you advise me plz ie cost ect.. I live in the scotish borders don’t no best place ( garage) ,how much will it cost me to get its look at thanks in advance.
Hello Marc,
Welcome to the world of Freelanders, I’m sure you are going to have a lot of fun.
To replace a track rod end is £48.19. It would depend where the oil was coming from as to how much this would cost to repair.
Make sure there is always coolant in your Freelander. Use the red coolant, not the blue or the green and ensure it is kept at the maximum level when on level ground and the engine is cold.
Top the power steering fluid up to the maximum. If there appears to be air in the system once it is topped up you will need to have it bled.
If it is struggling to start when cold you should try changing the glow plugs, you are looking at about £100 for this.
It does sound as though your Freelander could benefit from an overall service including glow plug change. At 145,000 miles it is due for the coolant and brake fluid changed; the cam belt changed (every 48,000 miles) and the poly vee ancillary drive belt changed. A bit service I’m afraid. If you include the glow plugs it will be £800.
At 145,000 miles do you know if it has ever had the viscous coupling unit (VCU) changed? If it has not then it is long overdue, the VCU should be changed about every 70,000 miles to avoid damage to the rest of the drive train. If the Freelander is holding back on you, a little like the brakes are on, when you move on full lock, particularly in reverse, then you really need to be getting it changed as a matter of emergency, or at least drop the prop shaft off the Freelander to avoid any further damage.
Be aware having the same type, make, size and tread depth of tyres is VERY important to a Freelander, so if tyres need changing always change all four at the same time, otherwise you could wind the VCU up.
Unfortunately I do not know of a garage at the Scottish Borders we could recommend. We are based in Norfolk, IP26 4RH.

Hi, what can I use to clean the engine, so I can find the leak?
Hi Marc,
If you are trying to clean off old oil etc. to find a leak then use brake cleaner, just spray it on then wipe off and it should clean perfectly.

Sue

Hi , if I drop the prop shaft , would it be possible to replace it?
Hi Marc,
Yes, dropping the prop shaft does not change anything on the Freelander, it just disconnects the rear wheels from the front, so it can be replaced at any time.

Sue

Also which socket sets would be useful for fixing my freelander before I buy ,is there any specific tools I would need for maintence and repair using the Haynes Manual , your help would be much much apperciated thank you again..
Marc
Hi Marc,
The most common sockets are 8mm, 10mm, 11mm, 12mm, 13mm, 15mm, 17mm, 18mm, 19mm, 21mm, 22mm, 27mm, 30mm, 32mm.
There are no specific tools for maintenance, a general tools box, including allen keys and star torx will do.

what will happen if we drive short distances with freelander seeing that black smoke coming out and loosing power
Hi Sharmayne,
It depends what the problem is. Which engine does your Freelander have, is it the TD4 diesel? If it is your problem is liable to be a split turbo hose – you will blind anybody driving behind you!

Sue

My freelander is lacking in power and black smoke coming from rear, does that mean that my turbo has gone
Hi Harryo,
What year is your Freelander? Depending on the year it could be the EGR valve. Check the large air hoses and large inlet hoses. Also check the hoses for the intercooler.

Sunroof sticking
Hi Peter,
Unfortunately the Freelander sunroofs do tend to be prone to sticking. To keep them in good order they need to be opened and closed regularly – not something we think of doing in this cold weather! Once it is causing problems, if you don’t generally use the sunroof it can be better to get it closed then remove the fuse so it can not be opened accidentally. Otherwise, if oiling etc. will not help it, it can be easier and cheaper to just replace it with a good working second hand unit.

Sue

freelander 2 td4 motor stops whislt driving, they cannot find the cause. Can you help.
After short stop engine starts again.
Hi Carl,
Is this the Freelander 1 2.0 diesel TD4 or the Freelander 2 2.2 diesel TD4?
If it is the Freelander 1 2.0 diesel TD4 then it could be the low pressure pump. What year is the vehicle?
All the best,
Sue
