Freelander 1.8 Petrol Service from just £155.86 incl. VAT
The Freelander 1.8 litre petrol should be serviced every 12,000 miles (20,000 km) or every 12 months, which ever comes sooner.
The service schedule involves an A service and a B service.
The 12,000 mile (20,000 km) or 12 month service is an A service.
The 24,000 mile (40,000 km) or 24 month service is a B service.
The A and B services then alternate for the life of your Freelander.
In addition to the standard A and B services there are a few other items which need replacing at fixed intervals, these are:
- the coolant requires replacing every 36,000 miles (60,000 km) or 36 months (3 years);
- the brake fluid requires replacing every 36,000 miles (60,000 km) or 36 months (3 years);
- the spark plugs require replacing every 72,000 miles (120,000 km) or 72 months (6 years);
- the cam / timing belt (with which we also change the water pump) requires replacement every 72,000 miles (120,000 km) or 72 months (6 years);
- the gearbox oil requires replacing every 96,000 miles (160,000 km) or 96 months (8 years);
- the Poly V ancillary driving belt requires replacement every 96,000 miles (160,000 km) or 96 months (8 years);
- the fuel filter requires replacing every 120,000 miles (200,000 km) or 120 months (10 years).

In addition to the above servicing please remember that your Freelander requires the air bags replaced every ten years and the seatbelt pre-tensioners replaced every fifteen years.
Although not specified on any Land Rover service schedule, you also need to replace your viscous coupling unit approximately every 70,000 miles to avoid damage to the rest of your drive train.
Look after your Freelander – give us a call on 0780 9575 421 to give it a professional service!

just took ownership of a 2001 Y reg Freelander 1 1.8 3dr S. however no records of any services or work which has been done, it has done around 150,000 miles so i am after some advice?
Hi Philip,
Congratulations on your new acquisition.
Your Freelander is low mileage for the year, so your service pattern will be dictated by age rather than by mileage. At 18 years your Freelander is due for the timing belt and water pump changed (which includes changing the coolant); the brake fluid changed and the spark plugs; in addition to the larger B service.
It would also be worth checking the viscous coupling unit (VCU) to ensure it is not tight – at 150,000 you would expect it to be on its third VCU. The best way to test this is to do a full lock turn, either in first or reverse gear, and preferably on a loose surface, such as gravel. If, when you take your foot off the accelerator, the Freelander comes to quite an abrupt halt, a little like the brakes have been applied, rather than a gentle rolling stop, then the VCU is putting a strain on the drivetrain and should be changed.
If, having no service record, other items have not been done, these would include changing the polyvee belt (which should have been done two years ago and can be checked whilst the service is being done); changing the manual gearbox oil (again this should have been done two years ago); and changing the fuel filter (which should have been done in 2011 and would be due to be changed again in 2021).
All the best,
Sue
