Is your Freelander tailgate window not operating properly? They have been known to randomly open before, or not close properly! Before heading to the garage try recalibrating it.
Here is the procedure:
1. Disarm the alarm system.
2. Disconnect your Freelander battery.
3. Wait for 5 seconds.
4. Reconnect your battery.
5. The tailgate window will automatically go down completely.
6. Put your key in the ignition and turn to the ‘ignition’ position.
7. Using the tailgate window control on the dashboard, press and hold until the tailgate window is fully up.
8. If you get a warning buzzer then the calibration has failed, otherwise that’s it, your tailgate window is recalibrated.
Hello,
I’ve recently replaced the regulator on my tailgate window and have found that all the mechanisms work, however once put up the window automatically drops. The only time that the window does not drop is when it slips out of the seal and on to the ‘outside’ of the car. Is there a way of making sure the window stays up when in the correct channel and seal of the car?? I’m assuming that the car thinks that the window is fully shut when on the ‘outside’ but not on the inside.
Thank you,
Jamie.
Hi Jamie,
It sounds like the window glass is sat too high up on the window carriers, so the window is getting to the top before the mechanism reaches the top.
All the best,

Hi Sue, I’ve got the same issue! I tried setting the regulator in different positions, and playing with the positions while the motor was disconnected but seems like it goes all the way up. The calibration doesnt detect that its going over the roof. I’m really worried the window is going to snap. What can I do?
Hi David,
If the tailgate window is going up on the outside of the door then you need to make an adjustment at the bottom mounting to tilt it inwards more.
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sue, I have a FL2 2008 HSE 2.2, I have a fault with the drivers side rear door lock. The lock does not unlock via the RCL but unlocks when the vehicle is moved the door unlocks. Also The door does not lock via the RCL. The lock can be opened/ closed manually. This happens with both remotes.
Any thoughts?
Thank you Paul
Hi Paul,
This sounds like an issue with the door locking latch. Change this and everything should work correctly. It looks like these are £79.07 + VAT for your model, but you will need to check from your Chassis number.
All the best,
Sue

Hi there,
I have, what I consider, big problems with my Tailgate of my Free Lander 1 2002 TD.
The tailgate will not open and the window will not respond.
There is a red light on the dashboard says the tailgate is open, despite being firmly shut.
The window mechanism in the tailgate will not work, with or without the key fob or on the switch on the console. The central locking is not unlocking the tailgate and the key and handle doesn’t work.
I tried to reset the system by disconnecting the battery, this managed to drop the tail gate window, however it would not go back up.
I have checked all the fuses. Swapped relays around and double checked earth connections at the rear of the vehicle (which was undone but is now tightened).
I’m at my absolute limit with checking wires and connectors…help!!
Many thanks
Hi Derek,
It sounds as though your issue is with the tailgate door actuator. If the door is not registering that it is closed then the window will not work. Try changing the actuator and hopefully everything else will start working once it knows the door is shut.
All the best,
Sue

Si tuve problemas con el transfer y el viscoso, tuve que cambiar todo.
Hi German,
The VCU on the Freelander should be replaced approximately every 12,000 km to avoid damage to the rest of the drive train. If, when you drive in first or reverse on full lock, you feel the Freelander holding back on you, a little like the brakes are on, then you are already putting strain on the drive train and you should replace the VCU or remove the prop shaft as soon as possible.
If you have problems with the transfer box (IRD) then you need to replace both the transfer box (IRD) and the VCU. However if you are only experiencing problems with the VCU then you only need to replace the VCU – the cause of drive train issues tend to stem from either the VCU or mismatched tyres, other issues along the drive train tend to by symptoms of these causes.
I hope this helps to clarify things for you.
All the best,
Sue

Sue
