Are you wondering what size tyres will fit your Freelander, or if you can change the wheels for some from a different vehicle? Well we have found this great little calculator which will help answer your questions. The results will give your the OEM options, however if you expand the boxes using the red arrow to the right of your trim then you will get all other options which are also suitable.
Hi, I would like to put A.T tyres on my freelander 1 (l314). It’s basic with no lift kit or spacers and I am running on 225/55/r16 Can you please tell me what size of at tyres would fit my car with the current alloys. Thanks.
Hi Andrew,
My profound apologies for the delay in responding, somehow the notices of comments on our site have not been coming through to us.
Have you sorted this out now?
All the best,
Sue
Hello Sue.
Looking to purchase a Freelander 2 2.2 SD4 HSE with standard size wheels and tyres.
What’s the widest tyre I can fit without creating any problems? I would just like to fill the arch out a bit more. Many thanks.
Hello Barry,
Congratulations on your decision to purchase a Freelander 2, they are such great vehicles.
The widest tyre you can use will depend on your wheel size – whether it is 16, 17 or 18 inch (all are fairly standard). In order to determine the widest tyres go to https://alloywheels.com/Tyre_Calculator, put in the current size of tyre you have and the calculator can give you all tyre sizes within 1% of the original. You could go up to 2.5% larger than the original circumference, but going beyond this can result in issues with the drivetrain.
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sue
I have a Freelander 1 2.5 v6 automatic 2004 and want to increase tyre size if possible. Your calculator recommends size 215 65 R16. Is that the largest I can go to without affecting the drive train . Your web site is amazing, so glad that I found it. Its so informative and user friendly and has answered many of my concerns already. Thanks so much .
Hi Lynn,
Thank you for your kind words on our site.
If you are staying with your 16 inch wheels then you could go to a 235/60/16 without affecting the drivetrain – these are 0.36% larger than the 215/65/16’s you have.

Sue

Hello Sue,i have a freelander1 20td4 extreme, i have 16 inch wheels with 215-65-16 tires, can i take 225-75-16 or 225-70-16 tires when i buy new this year?
Thanks for the answer
Greetz from Czech republik.
Hello Sybe,
The 225-75-16 tyres are 7.8% (58mm) larger than the original tyres so we would not recommend using these. Likewise the 225-70-16 tyres are 4.92% (35.5mm) larger and we would not recommend these either.
Here is a link to a table which shows all tyre sizes within 1% of the original tyres so none of these should cause you a problem – https://alloywheels.com/tyreCalculatorResults.

Hi Sue , my recently purchased freelander 1 seems to be having a thermostat problem or maybe normal ? anyway it takes time to warm up and the temp gauge did sit spot in the middle but in the last few days i have noticed the guage mainly only sits about 1/4 ish and then slighly more to just under the middle . I did today take it for a run around after checking coolant level and opening bleed valve to check for air and all seems ok . took it for a spin mainly in slow traffic and temp mainly sat just below middle but then popped into shop and when i came out put key in without starting it temp guage went to middle but soon as started it dropped down again . i also noticed when i got home the rad was hot at the top and cold at bottom as was the hose at the bottom of rad on the rhs as you peer into engine bay .. Any advice /tips would be gratefully appriciated as to what i should do now as its starting to get colder days now and heater isnt blowing very hot just warm enough to defrost windows in morning at moment . regards Mick
Hi Michael,
That does sound like a thermostat issue – which engine does your Freelander have? It will be a case of replacing the thermostat. Also worth checking that you do not have a blockage in the cooling system or air int he system (which, as you say, seems to be fine).

Sue

Hi recently purchased a freelander td4 sport 2006 and on closer inspection realised i had 2 different makes but same size on vehicle matched on back and front , sizes are 235 50 18 . My question is, is the tyre size ok for my vehicle as when i put it it into the checker on the page come back compleatly different to what i have and if i try to put tyre size in wont let me put in my size tyre !!
Hi Michael,
My apologies for the delay in responding.
235 50 18 is the correct wheel size for your Freelander, however, if there are two different makes on there then you could have issues with the drivetrain. After having driven the Freelander go underneath and touch the viscous coupling unit (VCU), if it is too hot to hold your hand on comfortably then the difference in the tyres is winding it up and you will need to change them.

Thank you for the reply Sue , i have been checking the vcu after every trip and all seems ok as doesnt get warm or make any noises from the drive train. The previous owner informed me he had a new propshaft fitted as there was non fitted and while under vehicle i can see its a new one and the vcu looks reasonably new but the brackets either side holding it all up looks old do you think i should change them as a precaution ? As soon as i can will change all 4 tyres to same make etc now i know there the correct size . thanks mick 🙂
Hi Michael,
That is good news.
With regard to the brackets either side of the VCU there is no need to change them unless they have play.

Sue

Hi
I have a 2010 Freelander 2. Tyres are 235/65R17.
I would like to get a bit of extra ground clearance. Can I use 235/70R17 tyres? The circumference would increase by 3%. Would this create a issue with the drive train?
thanks
Hi Dilip,
It is recommended to stay within +/- 2.5% of the original tyre size, so we would not recommend going to 3% as yes, it could cause a problem with the drivetrain.
All the best,
Sue
Hi there I’ve got a freelander 2 2008 tyres on it are 235 65r 17 looking to buy tyres but seen these 255 65 16 would they fit many thanks
Hi Stuart,
You can certainly use a 255 65 16 tyre on your Freelander if you change the wheels to 16 inch ones. This size tyre fits within the +/- 2.5% difference to the original.
All the best,
Sue
My apologies.

Hi Lant
I have a 2010 freelander 2 with 235/65/17 , I was looking at a set of BF Goodridge , they make them in a 245/6517 , would these only be wider or change the rolling circumference aswell ? , they also make in a 225/65/17 , any thoughts would be appreciated
Many Thanks
Duane
Hi Duane,
Either of the BF Goodridge tyres would be fine. The 245/65/17’s have a 1.76% larger diameter (13mm), which is within the recommended tolerance of +/-2.5%, and the 225/65/17’s have a 1.76% smaller diameter, 13mm.
All the best,
Sue
Hi there, could you please tell me if 215/45/R17 size tyres will be okay for a 2004 Freelander TD4?
Thank you
Hi Richard,
My apologies for the delay in responding.
No, we would not recommend putting 215/45/R17 tyres on your Freelander as these are 9.42% (65mm) smaller than the original 235/55/R17 tyres. Our recommendation is to stay within +/- 2.5% of the original diameter.
All the best,
Sue
Hi Sue.
I have a freelander 1 2005 I would like to know if I can put 234/55R17 on my car. It has currently got 225/55R17 on it.
Hi Lant,
I assume you mean 235/55R17 and not 234/55R17.
Yes, your Freelander will be fine with either 225/55R17 or 235/55R17 tyres.
All the best,
Sue
What load rating for fl2? 107 or 103? If 103, presumably 107 is ok too?
Hi Phil,
It depends on your tyre size.
You can find the Land Rover specifications for the Freelander 2 here: http://www.freelanderspecialist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Screen-Shot-2017-09-11-at-17.32.07.png.
Yes, if the specification is 103 then 107 is okay too.
All the best,
Sue
What the maximum size i can put in the Freelander 2 2.2 sd4 2011? I already have a 235×65 r17 and want to lift a little! 265×70 r17?
Hello Caio,
From what I can tell the largest diameter tyre you can put on your Freelander without risking damage to the drivetrain (that is keeping within +/- 2.5% of the original size) is 215/75 R17 whic are 17mm larger (2.31%). You can also use 245/65 R17’s which are 13mm larger (1.76%).
All the best,
Sue

Hi Sue
please can you advise what the maximum size of wheel spacers i can fit on my
2003 freelander 1 without replacing the studs ?
thanks.
Hi Mark,
Unfortunately I do not really know anything about spacers as we never use them. Your best bet is to speak to a tyre specialist, just make sure they are knowledgeable of 4×4’s.
Sorry we could not help in this instance.

Hi Sue,
Nice website you have; very informative! Small question: I just bought a freelander 1 2.0TD4 of 2004 and the car is delivered with 15″ original alloys, type ‘Adventure’ and 195/80 R15 Goodyear Wrangler All weather tyres. According to the Tyre calculator above this is a non-OEM combination. Are there any technical issues that may force me to reconsider this actual configuration on my Freelander?
Kind regards
Bert
Notts
Hi Bert,
Apologies for the delay in responding and thank you for your kind comments on our site.
The tyres are the original size of 195/80 R15 for a 15″ wheel, so you should get no issues with this size of tyre.

Sue
