Many Freelander Owners would like to do some of the repair and service work themselves. If this is you and you would like a manual to guide you then the Haynes manual is a very good guide for the general DIY mechanic. It includes excellent step by step instructions and photographs to guide you through most tasks.
If your Freelander is 1997 – 2003 then the manual you need is:
Freelander 1997 – 2003 Haynes Manual
If your Freelander is 2003 – 2006 then the manual you need is:
Freelander 2003 – 2006 Haynes Manual
Unfortunately the Haynes manuals do not cover the 2.5 litre V6 petrol Freelander, however for anything other than the engine on these models the manual is still useful.
Currently there are no Haynes manuals for the Freelander 2, 2006 onwards.

hi
i think i have a air leak from my exhaust manifold or from my turbo to exhaust does this sound like an expensive fix?? would it be coverd in this manual its a td4 2004 freelander
Hi Adam,
If it is on the turbo to exhaust then it is a fiddly job. However if it is on the exhaust manifold then it is a big job.
Yes, the Haynes manual will cover what you need to do.
All the best,
Sue
Hi.Just bought a used Freelander S, but the key fob doesn’t unlock the car properly. I can hear a click from the locks, but the doors don’t unlock. It works just fine when locking, and the security system engages properly, but when unlocking I have to press the unlock button, then use the physical key to complete the sequence. Any ideas?
Hi Allan,
Congratulations on your purchase.
This will be faulty door mechanisms, you will need to change these to get the door working properly with the fob.
All the best,
Sue

Hi Sue, I thought that might be the case, you have just confirmed it for me, so thank you.
Take Care,
Allan
Please let me know all the Alan keys, spanners I should have for me to do some of the service or for emergencies. The car is a 2004 td4 auto.
Hi Solomon,
A good auto tool kit will suffice.

freelander 1.8 petrol 2005, seem to have thee water radiator symbol lit up but cannot see a problem water bottle is full its not losing any water actually not really going down and theirs no overheating problems seems to drive fine, although the water bottle is just water and no coolant in to . could that be the issue/ dirty sensor perhaps, any comments advice gratefully appreciated thanks
Hi Paul,
It is most likely an issue with the sensor, you can try to clean this or replace it if cleaning does not work.
With regard to having just water in the system we would STRONGLY advise you flush this out and replace with a RED coolant mix – DO NOT use green or blue, you need the red with OAT (organic acid technology). If you use plain water, green or blue coolant this will corrode the steel head gasket and could lead to head gasket failure.
All the best,
Sue

The rover 75 manual covers the k series 2.5 v6 engine. It’s the same motor in the freelander
Thank you Andy, that is very useful.
All the best,
Sue
Hi can you tell me how to (step by step) get to and remove the thermostat on a freelander 1 2.5v6 2006? Thanks
Hi Gavin,
The thermostat is in the V of the engine so you have to remove everything to get into the V. Unfortunately we do not have a step by step guide for this process and the Haynes manuals do not cover the V6 model. If you are desperate for a guide we could possibly create one but we would need to charge our hourly rate as it will take some time to do.
All the best,
Sue
