Want to know what is under the bonnet of your TD4 Diesel Freelander?
Below is the LHD view, however there is little difference between this and the RHD version.
1 Power steering reservoir
2 Cooling system expansion tank filler cap
3 Engine oil filler cap
4 Brake/Clutch fluid reservoir cap
5 Engine Control Module box
6 Engine compartment fusebox
7 Battery
8 Engine oil dipstick
9 Windscreen washer reservoir filler cap
Hi I have a freelander td4 it does not accelerate no power at all.
It’s reff count is very low is below 200
Hi Refilwe,
My apologies for the delay in responding.
Are you getting any error codes on diagnostics?
All the best,
Sue
I have a 2004 Freelander 1 td4 and my coolant reservoir is full of oil/sludge. The vehicle is not over heating as I have just drove it 600kms home. Any idea what the problem is. It has the BMW engine.
Hi Belinda,
We are sorry to hear of the issues with your Freelander. Given this is the TD4 engine it is more likely to be an issue with the oil cooler than a head gasket issue.
All the best,
Sue
Hello Germa’Pardo,
Sorry to hear your viscous coupling unit (VCU) and transfer box (IRD) have gone in the past. Generally the only reason the transfer box goes is if the VCU is not replaced in a timely manner, which is about every 120,000km. The other common thing which can affect the transfer box, but generally is more likely to affect the rear differential, is if you have mismatched tyres so it is very important that you replace all four tyres at the same time with the same make, model and size. Hence, if you change your VCU every 120,000 km and keep your tyres matched you should not experience any problems with the transfer box or rear differential.
All the best,
Sue

Hola Germa’Pardo,
Sue

hi , i have a 2007 freelander 2 2.2 TD4 HSE and there is a loud clunking noise coming from the left hand side where the pulley wheels are . it did go off when warmed up and is at its worse on cold mornings but its now there most of the time , it goes off if you up the revs which is around 700rpm at idle speed. if you load the electrics with front / rear heated screen , lights on , heated seats on , in fact anything electric , this also removes the clunking and the engine sounds normal as the idle speed is adjusted due to the load i think ,i have tryed the air con on and off , this makes no difference , im embarrassed to start the car as its so noisy , its going into a specialist on Tuesday to try and solve this problem as its under warranty so any help will be appreciated very much .
regards andrew
Hi Andrew,
Check all the belt pulleys, for the drive belt and timing belt; also check the water pump as this may be failing causing the noise.
All the best,
Sue
