2 Engine oil dipstick
3 Brake/Clutch fluid reservoir cap
4 Engine Control Module box
5 Engine compartment fusebox
6 Battery
7 Air cleaner
8 Engine oil filler cap

10 Power steering reservoir
Hi Sue,
I just bought a Freelander 1, 1999 3 doors. It’s a really cool car but there is one problem. The rear window keeps dropping while driving… (often when it’s raining)
It will go up but after a few moments it will drop again. I have tried to recalibrate it multiple times but nothing seems to work. Sometimes it doesn’t go down at all but when I get out of the car and close the drivers door the rear window will drop. It’s driving me nuts////
Hopefully you have a tip for me! I have tried to contact garages but here in the Netherlands there aren’t a lot of mechanics who want to help me with this…
Hope to hear from you and thank you in advance!
With kind regards,
Daphne
Hi Daphne,
Congratulations with your purchase, they really are great vehicles, I am sure, once you have sorted the window issue out – very annoying, I can imagine – you are going to love it.
The window tends to drop when the main car battery is reconnected – it could be worth checking you battery terminals are secure, give them a good clean and make sure the earth is secure.
All the best,
Sue

I have a freelander 1 1.8l petrol that I recently replaced the fuel pump on, got an oem brand new one from land rover, but now its over fueling and leaving the coils wet so it won’t start so I found this charcoal filter off of another freelander than I broke up but I’m not sure how it works and how do I get the return so that it doesn’t over fuel or is there another solution??
Hi Ishmet,
Can you hear the fuel pump priming when you turn the key on?
All the best,
Sue

Hi Sue
We have a 1998 freelander 3 door hardback. My other half wants to scrap it as he says the gasket has gone and it been standing for over a year so other things maybe wrong. Sentimental fool I am I would like to keep it and get repaired….is it worth repair and any idea on average costs.
Thanks
Hi Elaine,
I assume it is a 1.8 litre petrol Freelander.
For a standard head gasket replacement the price is £545 including VAT. Our deluxe head gasket replacement, required if the Freelander has badly overheated, is £945. However, it is possible to do anything in between these according to what damage is found when the cylinder head is removed. Do you know what symptoms it had?
These vehicles are now classified as classic cars. Those that love them, and there are plenty of people who do, are keen to keep them on the road as there is no other vehicle on the market which quite matches the Freelander 1. Generally the answer to the question whether it is worth fixing or not is, as you realise, a very personal one. The Freelanders still look amazing and it can often be difficult to get such a good looking and capable replacement vehicle for the cost of the repairs.
All the best,
Sue

hats off to the freelanderspecialists.com at last, there are believers!! I’m so tired of hearing “scrap it!!” and seeing a poor cousin attitude to the freelander, excellent website!! M.
Thank you M. We find those that shout “scrap it” only do so because they do not understand them. The Freelander is a great vehicle and it is wonderful to hear from others who love them too.
All the best,
Sue
Thinking of buying a Freelander Petrol 2001 1.8, 89,000 Miles. Seller states it has been well looked after with no expense spared. Also states the Head has been upgraded. any advice would be welcome. Thanks.
Hi Ernie,
If the head gasket has been replaced with the modified multi layer gasket that is good news.
The other thing to check is if the viscous coupling unit (VCU) has been replaced. We recommend replacing this every 70,000 miles to avoid damage to the rest of the drive train, however it is not on a service schedule so often does not get replaced until major damage occurs. If it has not been replaced you should budget on getting this done. To give you an idea of the cost we would charge £580 including VAT for a reconditioned VCU, genuine Land Rover bearings (in our experience the aftermarket ones just do not last) and fitting. It is worth checking the prop shaft is in situ, we have known a number of people buy a Freelander just to find it does not have a prop shaft, and to replace all the required items can really mount up.
Make sure the coolant in the system is red (it will look pink), if it is green or blue then you could get it flushed out and replaced but if it has used blue or green coolant for a long time to be honest we would recommend walking away as you would not know what internal corrosion has occurred.
These are the main things to check for. If you have any concerns when you go to test drive it do get back in touch and we can advise accordingly.
All the best,
Sue
