The Land Rover wheel and tyre specifications for your Freelander 1 are:
Wheel type and size:
⇒ Standard 51/2 J x 15″ steel
⇒ Option 51/2 J x 15″ alloy
⇒ Option 6.0 J x 16″ alloy
⇒ Option 6.0 J x 16″ alloy
Tyre sizes:
51/2 J x 15″ Wheels 195/80 R15 ‘Multi terrain’ tyre
6 J x 16″ Wheels 225/55 R17 ‘Multi terrain’ tyre
7 J x 17″ Wheels 225/55 R17 ‘Multi terrain’ tyre
I have a 2004 Freelander sport (i.e. lower/harder suspension) (90000 miles) with 235/50 R18 with Continental tyres, as recommended by Landrover.
The ride for passengers, particularly in the back, has always been pretty rough. Now, that its getting on, the ride appears to be worsening.
Do you think the ride would improve with smaller rims and deeper profile tyres?
If so which?
Quite fancy R15 or R16 rims with some butch A/T tyres but concerned that motorway driving will become unbearable.
Regards
John
Hi John,
The ride comfort would be improved by smaller rims as you will have more depth of tyre to cushion the ride.
We do not deal with tyres so are not in the best position to advise on the most comfortable tyres, however there has been a great survey done where one of the parameters is ride quality, you can check out the results for the A/T tyres at http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.jsp?type=ORAT.
All the best,

I think there’s a mistake about Tyres/ Wheels.
You are mixing 6J with 7J
