Do you do very low mileage in your Freelander, or just use it for short trips?
Many people think a low mileage vehicle, or one which has only been used for short trips, must be in great condition. Sorry to burst the bubble, but these Freelanders can have problems.
If your Freelander is only used for short trips it does not get the chance to heat up fully and hence burn off any harmful substances in the oil.
To compensate for this you can either take your Freelander out on a longer trip once a week (it would love that!), or use an additive to compensate for it.
If your Freelander spends a lot of time not being used, this can keep the mileage low but it does not do the oil much good. Change your oil more regularly if your Freelander is doing low mileage – every six months will help to keep it in tip top condition.
Hi there, I’ve just recently purchased a freelander 1 for my folks who only tiddle about town…what kind of additives do you recommend?
Cheers
Emma
Hi Emma,
Congratulations on your purchase, your folks must be thrilled.
What engine does the Freelander have?
All the best,
Sue
I am thinking about looking for freelancer td4′ around 2005 -2006 reg 3 door to drive for work and to pull a food trailer ,
What should I look out for ?.
I understand this, and have always found all my cars are better when driven more often… but what is defined as low mileage – how far is far enough?
We typically drive a minimum 5 miles 6 times a week from cold, but often 10-15 miles at a go. Much less often more than this in a single journey. All journeys are open road for the first 5 miles, 40-60 mph.
Just bought a 2014 FL2, 21,000 miles, so perhaps take it on a long run as it’s only been 2000 miles since April.
BTW – love the website – what a fantastic resource.
Hi Phil,
Congratulations on your new purchase.
What you are aiming to do is get the car up to temperature and then give it chance to burn off any residue in the system. Hence, how long this takes can depend on the type of driving and the external weather conditions. If you find your oil filler cap always seems to have some residue on it then generally you are not running it long enough. If you could take it on a longer run every now and then it would certainly help.
Thank you for your kind words on our website and enjoy your new Freelander.
All the best,
Sue

Thank you so much for the Freelander e-mails. We only use our hippo for short trips, our 2004 has 59k. We will change the oil more often now!
It’s a pleasure Jason, so pleased you are finding them helpful.
All the best,
Sue
