Ever wondered when a cut in a tyre will be considered an MOT failure?
If the cord is visible then it is automatically a fail for the MOT. If, however, the cord is not visible then it depends how big the cut is. If it is less than 25mm long or 10% of the section width – whichever is greater – then it should be a pass or an advisory. If it is longer than this the cut will need to be opened up with a blunt instrument to see if a cord is visible inside (not felt, but actually visible) then it will fail.
Every year I get all eight tyres on my two cars condemned due to cuts. It always the same, “cut to the cords” and there is never any demonstration of the cords actually being visible and likewise never any negotiation.
