This Freelander is in superb condition, ready to hit the open road. It is a real head turner, a beautiful blue that is quite different from the normal Freelander blue, a fantastic looking vehicle that looks far more expensive than it actually is – both on the inside and the outside.
Please call to arrange a viewing and test drive.

So glad to have found your site! I have a 2005 Freelander, automatic with @ 110,000 miles. Recently, the car is losing power when I accelerate. “Not gaining traction” might be a better way to put it. For example, the engine gives me the sensation that I should be shifting gears if it were a manual transmission. Also, like Geoff (above) a knocking sound from the rear — when I am in reverse or cornering, seems to have started at about the same time.
I am in the US. Any thoughts you care to share will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Lisa,
Sorry to hear you are having problems with your Freelander.
The knocking sound from the rear is likely to be one or more of the rear differential bushes – given that it happens in reverse and when cornering it could be the centre bush and one of the side bushes.
With regard to the Freelander not appearing to shift gear when expected, this could be an issue with one of the shift solenoids in the gearbox. The best thing would be to have it put on diagnostics to determine which codes are coming up.
If the knocking does turn out to be the rear differential bushes then the cause could be that your viscous coupling unit (VCU) is past its usable life – for the V6 Automatics this tends to be longer than the 70,000 miles that a manual, however if the Freelander feels like it is holding back on you, a little like the brakes are on, when cornering on full lock then it is time to replace the VCU. The other cause is mismatched tyres. Ideally all four tyres should be replaced at the same time with the same make, model and size. If you have too much difference in the rolling radius of the tyres (and 5mm is considered too much) then you can cause a strain on the drive train.
All the best,
Sue

Thanks for you reply Sue. Unfortunately I’m after an auto rather than a manual, as im planning on turning it into a bit of an off roader…
I shall however keep an eye on your sight in case anything suitable comes up.
No problem Roger, the only autos we have at the moment are 2.5 V6 Petrol Freelander 1’s or a 2.2 diesel Freelander 2.
All the best,
Sue

Hi there, is this freelander still for sale? If so, do you do part ex (for a Mercedes, not a freelander)
Hi Roger,
Unfortunately this has now sold – sorry, must have forgotten to update the website. We only part exchange on Freelanders I’m afraid as we do not deal in any other vehicle. We have a 2003 Td4 coming up shortly if you are interested, although it is manual.
All the best,
Sue

Very impressed with your website. I have a Freelander 2 which is almost 3yrs old and has done just 20,000 miles. I have noticed a noise from rear when starting off especially when cornering. It is under warranty and main agents have diagnosed a faulty vcu and will replace it for me when they get authorisaion, and the part, from Landrover. My warranty runs out in 4 weeks time so could you please tell me if there is anything I need to get checked associated with the VCU. I would also be grateful if you could advise me of anything else I should get checked while the car is still under warranty. I am an older driver and I tow a caravan and was hoping a Landrover would give me trouble free motoring as I intend to keep it at least another 5 years
Hi Geoff,
Thank you for your kind words on our site.
The Freelander 2 starts from 2006 and does not have a VCU it uses the Haldex active-on-demand system.
If your Freelander was pre 2006 then it would have a VCU which should be changed about every 70,000 miles to avoid damage to the rest of the drivetrain.
Given your Freelander is a 2012 then it does not have a VCU, it has a Haldex active-on-demand system. The issue the Freelander 2 is more likely to have which would cause a whining noise from the rear is the rear differential, however if the noise changes when cornering it could be a wheel bearing.
The other thing to check on the Freelander 2 is for leaks on the intercooler.
All the best,
Sue
